top data system (TDS) software for spectrum simulation of asymmetric molecules

2005

Abstract The D 2 h TDS ( D 2 h Top Data System) program suite has been developed with the aim of studying any rovibrational band or polyad of X 2 Y 4 ( D 2 h ) asymmetric top molecules. It is based on the same principles as similar programs from our group already released for various molecular symmetries ( T d , O h , C 4 v , C 2 v ). We work in the O ( 3 ) ⊃ D 2 h chain and this choice has consequences on the method used to specify the input parameters of the programs for Hamiltonian and transition moment calculations. Two examples concerning the ν 12 and ν 2 bands of the C 2 H 4 molecule are presented. This suite consists of a series of FORTRAN programs called by a script. The whole packa…

Two-dimensional optical wavelet decomposition with white-light illumination by wavelength multiplexing

2001

We present a novel method for achieving in real time a two-dimensional optical wavelet decomposition with white-light illumination. The underlying idea of the suggested method is wavelength multiplexing. The information in the different wavelet components of an input object is transmitted simultaneously in different wavelengths and summed incoherently at the output plane. Experimental results show the utility of the new proposed method.

Vorticity cutoff in nonlinear photonic crystals

2005

Using group theory arguments, we demonstrate that, unlike in homogeneous media, no symmetric vortices of arbitrary order can be generated in two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear systems possessing a discrete-point symmetry. The only condition needed is that the non-linearity term exclusively depends on the modulus of the field. In the particular case of 2D periodic systems, such as nonlinear photonic crystals or Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials, it is shown that the realization of discrete symmetry forbids the existence of symmetric vortex solutions with vorticity higher than two.

Spatial Solitons in Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Fibers

2017

This chapter aims to review the most relevant results on solitons in nonlinear solid-core photonic crystal fibers since their introduction about fifteen years ago. These include fundamental solitons and vortices, as well as vector systems of two fundamental, vortex or mixed components. Also other related systems as solitons in double-core photonic crystal fibers will be reviewed. The presentation will describe the mode families as well as their stability properties. The work is intended to be a comprehensive document on the field and provide a fast update to the reader as well as the necessary sources for a further detailed documentation.

Evanescent light scattering: The validity of the dipole approximation

1998

In near-field optics the very concept of dipole is often used to represent either an elementary source or a scattering center. The most simple and widely used example is that of a small spherical particle whose polarizability is assumed to conform to the Clausius-Mossotti relation. While in conventional, far-field optics this approximation is known to be valid provided that the object is much smaller than the wavelength, its extension to near-field optics requires some precautions. Indeed, in the case of the scattering, by a spherical object, of an evanescent field generated, for instance, by total internal reflection or by a surface polariton, the strong-field gradient may increase the con…

The Random-Phase Approximation

2007

In this chapter we extend the TDA particle-hole formalism of Chap. 9 to include correlations in the nuclear ground state. This sophisticated particle-hole formalism is called the random-phase approximation (RPA). In this description the simple Hartree-Fock particle-hole vacuum is replaced by a correlated ground state involving many-particle-many-hole excitations of the simple particle-hole vacuum. The resulting configuration mixing in excited states is more involved in the RPA than it is in the TDA. The ground-state correlations induce both particle-hole and hole-particle components in the RPA wave function.

Unrestricted Shapes of Jellium Clusters

1995

A jellium model with a completely relaxable background charge density is used to study metal clusters containing 2 to 22 electrons. The resulting shapes of the clusters exhibit breaking of axial and inversion symmetries, as well as molecular formation. The clusters without inversion symmetry are soft against deformation. The strongly deformed 14-electron cluster is found to be semi-magic. Stable-shape isomers are predicted.

Plasma Electron Kinetics and Distribution Functions in Laser Fields

2010

A concise review of the properties of electron distribution functions in a fully ionized plasma in the presence of a high-frequency laser field is presented. In detail is discussed the physical origin of most of the reported results in the case of strong fields. The presence of a laser field, through the inverse bremsstrahlung absorption, alters dynamically the roles of and the interplay between electron-ion and electron-electron collisions shaping the distribution function. Special attention is paid to the role of e-e collisions in the process of laser-plasma interaction.

Optical illustration of a varied fractional Fourier-transform order and the Radon-Wigner display.

2010

Based on an all-optical system, a display of a fractional Fourier transform with many fractional orders is proposed. Because digital image-processing terminology is used, this display is known as the Radon–Wigner transform. It enables new aspects for signal analysis that are related to time- and spatial-frequency analyses. The given approach for producing this display starts with a one-dimensional input signal although the output signal contains two dimensions. The optical setup for obtaining the fractional Fourier transform was adapted to include only fixed free-space propagation distances and variable lenses. With a set of two multifacet composite holograms, the Radon–Wigner display has b…
