The transcriptome of Echinostoma caproni adults: further characterization of the secretome and identification of new potential drug targets.
2013
Abstract Echinostomes are cosmopolitan parasites that infect a large number of different warm-blooded hosts, both in nature and in the laboratory. They also constitute an important group of food-borne trematodes of public health importance mainly in Southeast Asia and the Far East. In addition, echinostomes are an ideal model to study several aspects of intestinal helminth biology, since they present a number of advantages. For example, echinostomes are large worms whose life cycle is relatively easy to maintain in the laboratory. Recently, several studies documented their great value in the study of intestinal helminth–vertebrate host relationship. Detailed knowledge of their genome, trans…
Comparison of global responses to mild deficiency and excess copper levels in Arabidopsis seedlings
2013
[EN] Copper is an essential micronutrient in higher plants, but it is toxic in excess. The fine adjustments required to fit copper nutritional demands for optimal growth are illustrated by the diverse, severe symptoms resulting from copper deficiency and excess. Here, a differential transcriptomic analysis was done between Arabidopsis thaliana plants suffering from mild copper deficiency and those with a slight copper excess. The effects on the genes encoding cuproproteins or copper homeostasis factors were included in a CuAt database, which was organised to collect additional information and connections to other databases. The categories overrepresented under copper deficiency and copper e…
Considerazioni sulle strutture edilizie dell'area del Tempio-Criptoportico
2013
Transcriptomic data from panarthropods shed new light on the evolution of insulator binding proteins in insects
2016
BACKGROUND: Body plan development in multi-cellular organisms is largely determined by homeotic genes. Expression of homeotic genes, in turn, is partially regulated by insulator binding proteins (IBPs). While only a few enhancer blocking IBPs have been identified in vertebrates, the common fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster harbors at least twelve different enhancer blocking IBPs. We screened recently compiled insect transcriptomes from the 1KITE project and genomic and transcriptomic data from public databases, aiming to trace the origin of IBPs in insects and other arthropods. RESULTS: Our study shows that the last common ancestor of insects (Hexapoda) already possessed a substantial numbe…
Transcriptomic metaanalyses of autistic brains reveals shared gene expression and biological pathway abnormalities with cancer
2019
Este es el artículo que se ha publicado de forma definitiva en: https://molecularautism.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13229-019-0262-8 En este artículo también participa Joan Climent, Vera Pancaldi, Lourdes Fañanás, Celso Arango, Mara Parellada, Anaïs Baudot, Daniel Vogt, John L. Rubenstein, Alfonso Valencia y Rafael Tabarés-Seisdedos. Background: Epidemiological and clinical evidence points to cancer as a comorbidity in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A significant overlap of genes and biological processes between both diseases has also been reported. Methods: Here, for the first time, we compared the gene expression profiles of ASD frontal cortex tissues and 22 cancer t…
Evidence for a conserved queen-worker genetic toolkit across slave-making ants and their ant hosts
2021
AbstractThe ecological success of social Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps) depends on the division of labour between the queen and workers. Each caste is highly specialised in its respective function in morphology, behaviour and life-history traits, such as lifespan and fecundity. Despite strong defences against alien intruders, insect societies are vulnerable to social parasites, such as workerless inquilines or slave-making (dulotic) ants. Here, we investigate whether gene expression varies in parallel ways between lifestyles (slave-making versus host ants) across five independent origins of ant slavery in the “Formicoxenus-group” of the ant tribe Crematogastrini. As caste differences are o…
The Extracellular Vesicles of the Helminth Pathogen, Fasciola hepatica : Biogenesis Pathways and Cargo Molecules Involved in Parasite Pathogenesis
2015
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by parasites have important roles in establishing and maintaining infection. Analysis of the soluble and vesicular secretions of adult Fasciola hepatica has established a definitive characterisation of the total secretome of this zoonotic parasite. Fasciola secretes at least two sub-populations of EVs that differ according to size, cargo molecules and site of release from the parasite. The larger EVs are released from the specialised cells that line the parasite gastrodermus and contain the zymogen of the 37 kDa cathepsin L peptidase that performs a digestive function. The smaller exosome-like vesicle population originate from multivesicular bodies with…
Identification and characterization of nitrate-related genes in durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum Desf.) to improve Nitrogen Use Efficie…
2022
The increasing foods demand caused by the increasing world population posed new challenges to the modern agriculture. In recent years, many strategies have been adopted to cope with these needs and satisfy these demands. Among these, the improvement of agronomic techniques and plant selection and breeding are crucial for a sustainable improvement of crop production. Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development due to its important role in several biochemical pathways, constituting 2-5 % of plant dry matter. The excessive use of N fertilizer led to high environmental pollution with impacts on both ecosystems and human health. Therefore, N inputs reduction is one of …
Transcriptome changes induced by Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in leaves of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) promote higher salt tolerance
2022
AbstractThe salinity of soil is a relevant environmental problem around the world, with climate change raising its relevance, particularly in arid and semiarid areas. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) positively affect plant growth and health by mitigating biotic and abiotic stresses, including salt stress. The mechanisms through which these benefits manifest are, however, still unclear. This work aimed to identify key genes involved in the response to salt stress induced by AMF using RNA-Seq analysis on durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum Desf. Husn.). Five hundred sixty-three differentially expressed genes (DEGs), many of which involved in pathways related to plant stress resp…
MicroRNA Interaction Networks
2021
Bertolazzi’s thesis focuses on developing and applying computational methods to predict microRNA binding sites located on messenger RNA molecules. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression by binding target messenger RNA molecules (mRNAs). Therefo…
