Russia’s economy in the global crisis: An assessment of the Medvedev era

2011

This article analyses the state of the Russian economy during Dmitri Medvedev’s term of office (March 2008 to the present). The author begins by examining the country’s situation before the new president officially took up his post, after which the article goes on to describe the reforms the government subsequently attempted to bring in. These reforms were determined by the outbreak of a severe economic crisis that commenced in 2008 and which highlighted the structural problems ailing Russia’s economy. These problems, which the author describes in detail, may turn into very grave obstacles to the country’s sustained, long-term growth. Finally, the author describes the essential economic sec…

Diagnóstico económico-financiero de la empresa cooperativa. Un estudio comparado de los años 2004 y 2007

2013

Modelling the Tactical Behaviour of the Australian Population in a Bushfire

2015

This paper is concerned with the development of an agent-based model of population behaviour during a bushfire, to form the basis of a simulator that will be used as a decision-support tool for emergency managers. To ensure the validity of the simulation results, it is essential that the model, and the underlying agent architecture, are as realistic as possible. After providing some context about recent bushfires in Victoria, Australia, we justify the need for a BDI (belief, desire, intention) agent architecture. Although some tools exist to support the integration of such agents in simulations, they are infrequently used. We therefore show how an existing methodology for modelling military…

INCOME AND QUALITY OF LIFE INFLUENCE ON CITIZENS' PARTICIPATION IN ACTIVITIES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN LATVIA

2018

The aim of the paper is to analyse the factors influencing the citizen participation in activities of local governments in relation to quality of life in Latvia. The use of the CLEAR model, elaborated by a group of British researchers under guidance of Gerry Stoker, shows the possibilities of participation and engagement of citizens based on theoretical aspects. Latvia, as a member state of the EU, needs to develop and to involve more citizens in different social activities, since it has comparatively small experience in democratic processes due to its past of 50 years being a part of another country — the Soviet Union. The opportunities to participate in the European Parliament’s election …

Localizing Global Solidarity: Humanitarian Aid in Lesvos

2021

The so-called “refugee crisis” in Lesvos, Greece provides a poignant example of situated, local suffering that has called for the coordination of global resources to provide relief. Some of the first to respond were local and international Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity (CIGS). While a growing role for CIGS has been interpreted as a call for more global involvement, arguments for the increased localization of relief efforts suggest the need for aid agents to maintain a reflexive awareness of the potential for an influx of outside assistance to disempower those most affected. We argue that barriers to implementing the localization of humanitarian aid can be better understood by po…
