Criteri di Museologia per il Museo Diocesano di Monreale
2015
The paper sets out the criteria adopted in museological setting of the Diocesan Museum of Monreale. They have also inspired the exhibition of the Museum, under construction, that will contain the works coming from the Abbey of Santa Maria del Bosco of Calatamauro. It will take place in the Dormitory of the Monastery overlooking the cloist…
Abstract. Sources and Boundaries of Institutional and Linguistic Normativity. Towards a Critical Social Ontology.
2011
The talk explores the problem of how it is possible to rationally judge an institutionally justified act if, from Hegel to contemporary social ontology, we accept that human reason is necessarily embedded in particular lifeforms and institutional settings. The talk argues that there is a specific, moral criterion of fairness built in every institutional and communicative act, which requires us to respect human dignity in each one of our institutional or communicative acts, and that this criterion can be justified through a linguistic, deflationary reinterpretation of Kant's categorical imperative of universalization of reasons for action.
The Evolving Scenario in the Assessment of Radiological Response for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in the Era of Immunotherapy: Strengths and Weaknesses o…
2022
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a challenging malignancy characterised by clinical and biological heterogeneity, independent of the stage. Despite the application of surveillance programs, a substantial proportion of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages when curative treatments are no longer available. The landscape of systemic therapies has been rapidly growing over the last decade, and the advent of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has changed the paradigm of systemic treatments. The coexistence of the tumour with underlying cirrhosis exposes patients with HCC to competing events related to tumour progression and/or hepatic decompensation. Therefore, it is relevant to adopt prop…
Perspective validation of the eurofever classification criteria for monogenic periodic fevers.
2014
We recently proposed a set of provisional, evidence-based, clinical criteria for the classification of children and adults patients affected by monogenic periodic fevers. These criteria, built and validated in a cohort of 1215 patients with periodic fever enrolled in the Eurofever Registry from November 2009 to February 2013, displayed a high sensitivity and specificity.
Distance Measures for Portfolio Selection
2017
The classical Markowitz approach to the portfolio selection problem (PSP) consists of selecting the portfolio that minimises the return variance for a given level of expected return. By solving the problem for different values of this expected return we obtain the Pareto efficient frontier, which is composed of non-dominated portfolios. The final user has to discriminate amongst these points by resorting to an external criterion in order to decide which portfolio to invest in. We propose to define an external portfolio that corresponds to a desired criterion, and to assess its distance from the Markowitz frontier in market allowing for short-sellings or not. We show that this distance is ab…
Weighted-Average Least Squares (WALS): Confidence and Prediction Intervals
2022
We extend the results of De Luca et al. (2021) to inference for linear regression models based on weighted-average least squares (WALS), a frequentist model averaging approach with a Bayesian flavor. We concentrate on inference about a single focus parameter, interpreted as the causal effect of a policy or intervention, in the presence of a potentially large number of auxiliary parameters representing the nuisance component of the model. In our Monte Carlo simulations we compare the performance of WALS with that of several competing estimators, including the unrestricted least-squares estimator (with all auxiliary regressors) and the restricted least-squares estimator (with no auxiliary reg…
SIGNAL ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A VEHICLE CRASH TEST WITH A FIXED SAFETY BARRIER BASED ON HAAR WAVELETS
2011
Author's version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Wavelets, Multiresolution and Information Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1142/s0219691311003979 This paper deals with the wavelet-based performance analysis of the safety barrier for use in a full-scale test. The test involves a vehicle, a Ford Fiesta, which strikes the safety barrier at a prescribed angle and speed. The vehicle speed before the collision was measured. Vehicle accelerations in three directions at the center of gravity were measured during the collision. The yaw rate was measured with a gyro meter. Using normal speed and high-speed video cameras, the beha…
