Current state of critically ill patients sedation with volatile anesthetics. Its role in renal and hepatic toxicity
2013
Summary The anesthetic-conserving device (AnaConDa™) facilitated, from a technical viewpoint, the routine use of volatile anesthetics in intensive care patients using ICU ventilators. To date, its use is currently time-limited by clinicians due to the potential renal and hepatic toxicity associated with the production of plasma fluoride after its metabolism, despite its advantages. We reviewed the available human and animal studies literature examining the use of volatile anesthetics as sedative agents and its role in renal and/or hepatic toxicity. We have very few studies concerning the prolonged administration of sevoflurane through the AnaConDa™ and its effect on renal and hepatic functi…
Solubilities of Essential Oil Components of Orange in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
2000
The solubilities of pure limonene and linalool in compressed carbon dioxide have been measured using a flow apparatus at 318.2 K and 328.2 K and pressures ranging from 69 bar to 111 bar. The solubilities were successfully modeled using equations of state (Peng−Robinson, Soave−Redlich−Kwong, 3P1T, Dohrn and Prausnitz nopolar) and a semiempirical equation (Chrastill model). The generalized parameters for the Peng−Robinson EOS were obtained for each system. These parameters were independent of temperature, and they reproduce successfully all data available in the literature. The results show that the solubility of limonene in supercritical carbon dioxide was bigger than the solubility of linal…
The new era of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles
2009
The synthesis, the chemical and photochemical reactivity, and the use of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles in materials and as bioactive compounds have been reviewed. The material in this survey includes some historical background, general features, state-of-the-art applications together with a critical discussion about current limitations and suggestions for future developments.
An efficient algorithm for stopping on a sink in a directed graph
2013
Abstract Vertices of an unknown directed graph of order n are revealed one by one in some random permutation. At each point, we know the subgraph induced by the revealed vertices. Our goal is to stop on a sink, a vertex with no out-neighbors. We show that if a sink exists this can be achieved with probability Θ ( 1 / n ) , which is best possible.
Current and New Insights in the Sustainable and Green Recovery of Nutritionally Valuable Compounds from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni.
2015
International audience; The South American plant Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is a great source of noncaloric sweeteners (steviol glycosides), mainly concentrated in its leaves, but also has important antioxidant compounds (vitamin C, polyphenols, chlorophylls, and carotenoids) and other important macro- and micronutrients such as folic acid and all of the essential amino acids except tryptophan. Traditionally, conventional methods have been used to recover nutritionally valuable compounds from plant food matrices. However, nowadays, the need for obtaining greener, sustainable, and viable processes has led both food industries and food scientists to develop new processes in full correspondence…
PLASMA PROTEIN LOSS DURING SURGERY: BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF ALBUMIN SUBSTITUTION
2001
Plasma protein loss during abdominal surgery is a known phenomenon, but its possible pathophysiological relevance has remained unknown. The present study evaluates the effects of albumin substitution on systemic and local hemodynamics and cellular interactions in the mesenteric microcirculation. Rats underwent median laparotomy and exteriorization of an ileal loop for intravital microscopy of the mesenteric microcirculation. Plasma protein concentrations, systemic and local hemodynamics were recorded during the follow up period, with or without albumin substitution. Depending on the time course of plasma protein loss in control experiments, 80% of the calculated protein loss was infused dur…
The European trauma course – trauma teaching goes European
2014
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified trauma as the major health care challenge of our century, claiming more productive life years worldwide than any other disease [1]. In the European Union (EU), injury accounts for 15 % of all deaths before the age of 60 years and is the fourth most common cause of death, with more than 235,000 deaths each year from injuries, equating to 600 injury fatalities per day [2]. In children, adolescents and young adults, accident and injury rates are even higher, being the leading cause of death in these age groups. Mortality from trauma in the EU has fallen 20 % in the past 20 years, to a rate of 63.7 per 100,000 in 2010 [3]. This reduction is par…
