Magnetic field driven micro-convection in the Hele-Shaw cell

AbstractMicro-convection caused by ponderomotive forces of the self-magnetic field of a magnetic fluid in the Hele-Shaw cell under the action of a vertical homogeneous magnetic field is studied both experimentally and numerically. It is shown that a non-potential magnetic force at magnetic Rayleigh numbers greater than the critical value causes fingering at the interface between the miscible magnetic and non-magnetic fluids. The threshold value of the magnetic Rayleigh number depends on the smearing of the interface between fluids. Abstract The thermoconvective instability in an inclined rectangular channel filled with a fluid saturated porous medium and heated from below with a uniform flux is investigated. A stationary parallel buoyant flow with a linear temperature change in the transverse direction is considered. The linear stability to transverse and longitudinal roll disturbances of this basic state is examined. The thermoconvective instability onset of transverse rolls occurs when the Darcy–Rayleigh number exceeds a critical value, that increases with the inclination angle. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation on flow resistance law for a gravel-bed channel having bed arrangements characterized by different values of the number of boulders. The dependence is studied of a parameter, proposed for describing the gravel-bed surfaces, on the boulder concentration and on the ratio between the median diameter of the coarser particles and the median diameter of the bed layer. Prediction of Ductile Fractures in Metal-Forming Processes: an Approach Based on the Damage Mechanics

The Authors propose a new approach for the prediction of ductile fractures in bulk metal forming processes: the approach is based on a numerical analysis able to take into account damage occurrence and evolution in constitutive equations. The model supplies the distribution of the void volume fraction in the workpiece during the deformation path: consequently, the comparison to a critical value, determined by means of a simple tension test, allows to predict the growth of defects. The proposed approach has been applied to the drawing process: the numerical results have been compared with a set of experimental tests showing a good predictive capability of the model.
Band convergence in the non-cubic chalcopyrite compounds Cu_2MGeSe_4

Inspired by recent theoretical predictions on band convergence in the tetragonal chalcopyrite compounds, we have explored the influence of the crystal structure on the transport and bandstructure of different quaternary chalcopyrites. In theory, a changing lattice parameter ratio of c/2a towards unity should lead to band convergence due to a more cubic and higher symmetry structure. In accordance with this prediction, the different solid solutions explored in this manuscript show a significant impact on the electronic transport depending on the ratio of the lattice parameters. Two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ inteface with a potential barrier

We present a tight binding description of electronic properties of the interface between LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO). The description assumes LAO and STO perovskites as sets of atomic layers in the $x$-$y$ plane, which are weakly coupled by an interlayer hopping term along the $z$ axis. The interface is described by an additional potential, $U_0$, which simulates a planar defect. Physically, the interfacial potential can result from either a mechanical stress at the interface or other structural imperfections. The influence of roughness geometry and shields parameter on flow resistance in gravel-bed channels

The spatial variability of bed particles of a gravel-bed channel is analysed and treated experimentally in order to simulate the effects of the arrangement of coarse bed elements on the flow resistance law. For the studied bed patterns, characterized by the concentration Γ of coarser elements arranged on the bed layer, a particle arrangement parameter α is proposed. Magnetic microrods as a tool for microrheology

International audience; Dynamics of superparamagnetic rods in crossed constant and alternating magnetic fields as a function of field frequency are studied and it is shown that above the critical value of the amplitude of the alternating field the rod oscillates around the direction of the alternating field. The fit of the experimentally measured time dependence of the mean orientation angle of the rod allows one to determine the ratio of magnetic and viscous torques which act on the rod.
