Time response of avalanche photodiodes as a function of the internal gain
1998
Abstract Using a red LED and a blue laser as a light source, time response of avalanche photodiodes and Metal-Resistive Silicon (MRS) layer avalanche photodiodes [1] has been measured. A strong dependence of the time resolution on the internal gain has been observed. The obtained results show that the increase of the internal gain improves the time resolution. However, there exists a critical value for the internal gain. Beyond this value a deterioration of the time resolution is observed.
Screened potential and quarkonia properties at high temperatures
2009
We perform a quark model calculation of the quarkonia b (b) over bar and c (c) over bar spectra using smooth and sudden string breaking potentials. The screening parameter is scale dependent and can be related to an effective running gluon mass that has a finite infrared fixed point. A temperature dependence for the screening mass is motivated by lattice QCD simulations at finite temperature. Qualitatively different results are obtained for quarkonia properties close to a critical value of the deconfining temperature when a smooth or a sudden string breaking potential is used. In particular, with a sudden string breaking potential quarkonia radii remain almost independent of the temperature…
Exact non-Hookean scaling of cylindrically bent elastic sheets and the large-amplitude pendulum
2010
A sheet of elastic foil rolled into a cylinder and deformed between two parallel plates acts as a non-Hookean spring if deformed normally to the axis. For large deformations the elastic force shows an interesting inverse squares dependence on the interplate distance [Siber and Buljan, arXiv:1007.4699 (2010)]. The phenomenon has been used as a basis for an experimental problem at the 41st International Physics Olympiad. We show that the corresponding variational problem for the equilibrium energy of the deformed cylinder is equivalent to a minimum action description of a simple gravitational pendulum with an amplitude of 90 degrees. We use this analogy to show that the power-law of the force…
Oscillation spectra of semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two pump waves
2002
The transition of the single-frequency oscillation of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator for sufficiently large coupling strengths into two-frequency oscillation is predicted and is observed experimentally. The critical value of coupling strength at which the bifurcation occurs is a function of pump-intensity ratio and cavity losses. For certain combinations of these parameters, the critical coupling strength for spectrum bifurcation becomes smaller than the threshold coupling strength: in these cases double-frequency oscillation appears at the threshold. The supercritical bifurcation in the oscillation spectrum is analogous to the second-order phase transition.

Nonadiabatic Transitions for a Decaying Two-Level-System: Geometrical and Dynamical Contributions
2006
We study the Landau-Zener Problem for a decaying two-level-system described by a non-hermitean Hamiltonian, depending analytically on time. Use of a super-adiabatic basis allows to calculate the non-adiabatic transition probability P in the slow-sweep limit, without specifying the Hamiltonian explicitly. It is found that P consists of a ``dynamical'' and a ``geometrical'' factors. The former is determined by the complex adiabatic eigenvalues E_(t), only, whereas the latter solely requires the knowledge of \alpha_(+-)(t), the ratio of the components of each of the adiabatic eigenstates. Both factors can be split into a universal one, depending only on the complex level crossing points, and a…
Ionization dynamics of a model molecular ion
2005
We study the ionization dynamics of a model one-dimensional molecular ion as a function of the internuclear distance R, for different values of the laser intensity. The electron–nucleus potential is assumed to be a Poschl–Teller potential, whose parameters are chosen to have only two bare bound molecular states in the range of R considered. We describe three different theoretical approaches to study the dynamics of the system: an exact numerical, a semiperturbative and a phenomenological approach. All these approaches indicate the presence of a sharp ionization peak for a critical value of the internuclear distance, for which the energy difference between the two bound levels coincides with…
Mathematical background of the Riga dynamo experiment
2013
The Riga dynamo experiment is a laboratory model of the natural process that is responsible for all environmental magnetic-fields which are generated without human interference. This applies to the field of the Earth, the Sun, stars, and even galaxies which are produced by intense motions of large volumes of good electro-conducting fluids. For our experiment, we use molten sodium – the best liquid electro-conductor available in the laboratory. Approximately 2 m3 of molten sodium are filled into a prolonged cylinder, at the top of which rotates a propeller powered by 200 kW from two motors. The cylinder is divided by thin coaxial inner walls into three parts: in the inner tube the propeller …
Kinetics of Domain Growth and Aging in a Two-Dimensional Off-lattice System
2020
We have used molecular dynamics simulations for a comprehensive study of phase separation in a two-dimensional single component off-lattice model where particles interact through the Lennard-Jones potential. Via state-of-the-art methods we have analyzed simulation data on structure, growth and aging for nonequilibrium evolutions in the model. These data were obtained following quenches of well-equilibrated homogeneous configurations, with density close to the critical value, to various temperatures inside the miscibility gap, having vapor-"liquid" as well as vapor-"solid" coexistence. For the vapor-liquid phase separation we observe that $\ell$, the average domain length, grows with time ($…
XXZ-like phase in the F-AF anisotropic Heisenberg chain
2008
By means of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique, we have studied the region where $XXZ$-like behavior is most likely to emerge within the phase diagram of the F-AF anisotropic extended ($J-J'$) Heisenberg chain. We have analyzed, in great detail, the equal-time two-spin correlation functions, both in- and out-of- plane, as functions of the distance (and momentum). Then, we have extracted, through an accurate fitting procedure, the exponents of the asymptotic power-law decay of the spatial correlations. We have used the exact solution of $XXZ$ model ($J'=0$) to benchmark our results, which clearly show the expected agreement. A critical value of $J'$ has been found where the r…
