An assay based on inhibition of cytopathic effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) strains in Molt 4 cells was developed to quantitate neutralizing antibodies (NA) in sera of HIV-infected individuals. The assay was specific and gave results comparable to those obtained by the inhibition of immunofluorescence (IFI) and reverse transcriptase (RT) activity. The T cell response to bacterial antigens plays a major role in the pathogenesis of reactive arthritis (ReA) following enteric infections with Yersinia enterocolitica. To study the antigen specificity of the T cells at the site of inflammation, the response of cloned T cells from the synovial fluid of 2 patients with ReA to partially purified antigens of Yersinia enterocolitica was determined. The clones showed different patterns of response to various fractions, indicating a multiclonal response to Yersinia antigens, and these specificities differed in the 2 patients. The data obtained in this study suggest that eating <i>Euparipha pisana</i> (snail), a common food in Mediterranean countries, could give serious allergic reaction such as asthma. We describe here the identification and partial characterization of allergenic molecules form this new source. An aqueous extract of snail was obtained by homogenization in distilled water, centrifugation, dialysis and defatting with ethyl ether. Skin prick test (SPT) performed with the snail extract on 70 subjects allergic to the more common allergens of the Mediterranean area gave a SPT positivity in 61% of the subjects tested, with a mean value of histamine-equivalent prick (HEP) equal to 0.81 ± 0.2…

Culture filtrate concentrates were obtained from Candida albicans yeast and mycelial cells grown in the presence of 14C-protein hydrolysate for radioactive labeling of cellular polypeptides. Both growth forms released to the medium minor but significant amounts of proteinaceous materials. Encephalitis associated with antibodies against the neuronal gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor (GABA A -R) is a rare form of autoimmune encephalitis. The pathogenesis is still unknown but autoimmune mechanisms were surmised. Here we identified a strongly expanded B cell clone in the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with GABA A -R encephalitis. We expressed the antibody produced by it and showed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunohistochemistry that it recognizes the GABA A -R. The precise effector mechanisms mediating these graft-versus-tumor reactions are unknown. Human tumor cells expressing ganglioside GD2 were lysed by various effector populations targeted with an anti-CD3-anti-GD2 bi-specific antibody (BAb CD3 x GD2). This antibody-heteroconjugate was prepared by chemically cross-linking the OKT-3 monoclonal antibody (MAb) reactive with CD3 antigen on T lymphocytes with the ganglioside MAb ME 361, which binds preferentially to the tumor-associated ganglioside GD2. Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) clones directed against autologous renal-cell carcinoma (RCC) cell lines were generated by mixed lymphocyte/tumor-cell culture (MLTC) using peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). A CD8+, CD4- CTL clone MZ1257-CTL 5/30 with high cytolytic activity for the autologous tumor cell line MZ1257-RCC was established. No lysis of the autologous EBV-transformed B lymphocytes (EBV-B) or K562 cells was observed. A panel of HLA-A2-matched allogeneic RCC lines was recognized by CTL 5/30.
