On screening effects in pair production at intermediate and high energies

1972

The effect of screening in atomic field pair production is calculated in Born approximation without approximation as to energy or angle and compared with the results of previous calculations based on the high energy approximation. The difference between the two calculations is comparable to the errors in recent experiments. The effect of nuclear excitation on the total pair production cross section is also investigated, but is found to be extremely small.

Coherent (γ, π0) photoproduction in a local approximation to the delta-hole model

1993

Abstract We develop a local approximation to the Δh model for coherent π 0 photoproduction in nuclei which allows one to perform reliable calculations in heavy nuclei where the traditional Δh approach is technically unfeasible. We evaluate the cross section in different nuclei and compare our results with available data in 12 C.

Incoherent bremsstrahlung in nuclei

1994

We have studied the processes A(e, e′γ)X in nuclei, or incoherent bremsstrahlung, and determined expressions for the cross section in terms of the same nuclear response functions RL, RT, which appear in inclusive electron scattering (e, e′) in nuclei. Calculations of the cross sections are carried out using a Fermi gas model, complemented by the local-density approximation, to evaluate the response functions. We have carried out a study which shows that the reaction can be used to determine reliably the response functions from experimental data. On the other hand we have compared the incoherent bremsstrahlung with the coherent one in order to see the limits to the tagging technique, which p…

A systematic study of proton capture reactions in the SeSb region at energies relevant to the p process

2003

Abstract A systematic investigation of (p,γ) cross sections of nuclei from Se to Sb is presented. In-beam cross section measurements were carried out at E p = 1.4–5 MeV by using an array of 4 HPGe detectors of 100% relative efficiency shielded with BGO crystals. The S factors obtained are compared with the predictions of the statistical model code MOST.

Cross section limits for theCm248(Mg25,4n−5n)Hs268,269reactions

2009

We report on an attempt to produce and detect $^{268}\mathrm{Hs}$ and $^{269}\mathrm{Hs}$ in the nuclear fusion reaction $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}+^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ using the gas phase chemistry apparatus COMPACT. No decay chains attributable to the decay of hassium isotopes were observed during the course of this experiment. From the nonobservation of $^{269}\mathrm{Hs}$ we derive a cross section limit of 0.4 pb (63% confidence limit) for the reaction $^{248}\mathrm{Cm}(^{25}\mathrm{Mg},4n)^{269}\mathrm{Hs}$ at a center-of-target beam energy of 140 MeV. The evaluated cross section limit for the $^{248}\mathrm{Cm}(^{25}\mathrm{Mg},5n)^{268}\mathrm{Hs}$ reaction depends on the assumed half-life of …

Systematics of neutron emission probabilities from delayed neutron precursors

1973

A simple correlation based on the gross theory ofβ-decay is derived between the neutron emission probabilitiesPn of delayed neutron precursors, theirβ-decay energies and the neutron binding energies of the daughter nuclei. The correlation is shown to be valid for delayed neutron precursors among the fission products. ThePn-values of several expected but still unidentified neutron precursors are estimated together with their contributions to the delayed neutron groups in thermal-neutron induced fission of235U. Some aspects of theβ-strength function for transitions into highly excited states are discussed.

The new FL measurement from HERA and the dipole model

2012

From the new measurement of F_L at HERA we derive fixed-Q^2 averages . We compare these with bounds which are rigorous in the framework of the standard dipole picture. The bounds are sharpened by including information on the charm structure function F_2^(c). Within the experimental errors the bounds are respected by the data. But for 3.5 GeV^2 <= Q^2 <= 20 GeV^2 the central values of the data are close to and in some cases even above the bounds. Data on F_L/F_2 significantly exceeding the bounds would rule out the standard dipole picture at these kinematic points. We discuss, furthermore, how data respecting the bounds but coming close to them can give information on questions like colour t…

Instantons and eta meson production near threshold in NN collisions

1999

An enhancement for the $\eta$ production in proton-neutron collisions as compared with that in proton-proton scattering has been recently observed. We present a calculation for the production cross section, in proton-neutron collisions near threshold, within instanton model for the QCD vacuum and show that a specific flavor dependent nonperturbative quark-gluon interaction related to instantons is able to explain the observed enhancement.

Measurement of the cross section of high transverse momentumZ→bb¯production in proton–proton collisions ats=8 TeVwith the ATLAS detector

2014

This Letter reports the observation of a high transverse momentum Z -> b (b) over bar signal in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8TeVand the measurement of its production cross section. The data analysed were collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb(-1). The Z -> b (b) over bar decay is reconstructed from a pair of b-tagged jets, clustered with the anti- k(t) jet algorithm with R = 0.4, that have low angular separation and form a dijet with p(T) > 200 GeV. The signal yield is extracted from a fit to the dijet invariant mass distribution, with the dominant, multi-jet background mass shape estimated by employing a fully dat…
