Does ovarian blood flow distinguish between ovulatory and anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome?

2003

The purpose of this study was to determine whether parameters of ovarian blood flow distinguish between women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who ovulate and those who are anovulatory. This was a prospectively enrolled trial, carried out as a cross-sectional comparison of 12 ovulatory patients with PCOS and 20 matched subjects with classic PCOS and 10 healthy control subjects. Hormonal parameters and ovarian blood flow by color flow Doppler imaging were obtained in the early follicular phase.Characteristic elevations in luteinizing hormone (LH) and androgens were found in both groups with PCOS compared with control groups. Women with anovulatory PCOS had high insulin levels and lower Q…

Stress, pain, and work affiliation are strongly associated with health-related quality of life in parents of 14-15-year-old adolescents

2022

Abstract Background For many adults, their role as a parent is a vital part of their lives. This role is likely to be associated with a parent’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The aim of this study was to explore the associations between gender, demographic and psychosocial variables, pain, and HRQOL in parents of 14–15-year-old adolescents. Methods This was a cross-sectional study that included 561 parents. Data on demographic, psychosocial variables and pain were collected using validated instruments. HRQOL was assessed using the RAND-36. Data were analysed using univariate and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses. Results Four hundred and thirty-six (78%) mothers and…

Psycho-emotional adjustment in parents of adolescents: A cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of the impact of the COVID pandemic

2021

Abstract Purpose: adolescence is a time of change and it generally entails a greater family vulnerability thus; the aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for poor emotional adjustment to COVID among parents of adolescents. Design and methods: 94 parents of adolescents (11–18 years old, M = 13.90, SD = 1.85) participated at different times during the state of alert in Spain. 91.5% were mothers. Their ages ranged from 35 to 63 years (M = 46.54; SD = 5.09). The variables assessed were anxiety, depression and stress (DASS), moods (MOOD), somatization (SCL) and resilience (CD-RISC). Descriptive analyses, t-tests, ANOVAs, correlations, and hierarchical regressions were performed. All…

Associations between parental alcohol problems in childhood and adversities during childhood and later adulthood: a cross-sectional study of 28047 ad…

2021

Abstract Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are related to adverse physical and mental health outcomes. However, few larger studies based on a general population sample with age groups ranging from young adults to elderly have investigated whether parental alcohol problems increase the risk of offspring subjective reports of ACE both during childhood and current adult adversities. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between parental alcohol problems and adversities during childhood and later in adulthood. Methods The 28,047 respondents were adults (> 18 years old) from the general population who participated in the Norwegian Counties Public Health Survey…

Gynecological Manifestations, Histopathological Findings, and Schistosoma-Specific Polymerase Chain Reaction Results Among Women With Schistosoma hae…

2015

Schistosoma haematobium may cause pathology in the urinary and genital tracts. In the urinary tract, morbidity is correlated with intensity of infection, as indicated by the number of eggs excreted in the urine [1]. Up to 75% of women excreting S. haematobium ova in the urine may have ova in the lower genital tract. However, female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) may also occur in the absence of urinary egg excretion [2, 3]. FGS is rarely seen without use of a colposcope and is often overlooked even by those who have this tool. In remote areas, where most patients live, the cost of the equipment, the logistical difficulties associated with light sources, electricity, and clean instruments, as…

Quality of life in long-term breast cancer survivors - a 10-year longitudinal population-based study.

2013

Breast cancer survivors may experience adverse effects of cancer and/or treatment years after completion of therapy, which can considerably decrease quality of life (QoL). Little is known about the time course of QoL in breast cancer survivors beyond the fifth year post-diagnosis, when routine follow-up care has usually terminated. We therefore explored in detail whether and to what extent restrictions in breast cancer survivors persist and whether changes or aggravations in QoL occurred over time.QoL was assessed 1, 3, 5, and 10 years post-diagnosis in a population-based cohort of initially 387 female breast cancer patients from Saarland (Germany), using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23. Tim…

Results of an orthopaedic survey in young patients with severe haemophilia in Spain

2002

Summary.  This paper outlines the results obtained in a cross-sectional study of a group of young patients with severe haemophilia A and B. The primary aim of the study was to ascertain the level of orthopaedic complications in the group, the effects that these complications have on quality of life, and the medical resources used on these patients. The secondary aim was to relate their current orthopaedic state to the type of treatment received before the study. The study was carried out in 11 hospitals in Spain, where 70 severe haemophilia patients (factor VIII [FVIII] < 2%), with an average age of 21.6 and a median age of 22, and no inhibitors, were monitored. The percentage of patients s…

Cervical Cancer Screening in Women With Severe Mental Disorders An Approach to the Spanish Context

2018

Background The incidence of invasive cervical cancer and its mortality have been reduced through primary and secondary prevention. Screening rates tend to be lower in vulnerable groups, such as people with severe mental disorders, who have a later detection of cancer and a higher mortality. The access of these women to cervical cancer screening is uncertain in our context. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the cervical cancer screening rates in women with severe mental disorders. Methods This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Women 25 to 65 years old who were admitted during 2016 to the psychiatric unit of a public hospital in Spain were included in the study, and it w…

Electromyographic evaluation of synergist muscles of the pelvic floor muscle depending on the pelvis setting in menopausal women: A prospective obser…

2019

Background: Pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training is recommended to increase their strength and endurance. Muscles which act synergistically with PFM are taken into consideration in the therapeutic management of weakened PFM. Research question: how does electromyography activity of the synergists muscle to PFM change concerning pelvis position and does the greater bioelectric activity of synergist muscles affect PFM function? Methods: A prospective, observational study evaluating the surface electromyography (sEMG) activity of selected synergist muscles of the PFM depending on the orientation of the pelvis. One hundred thirty-one menopausal women registered for the study were screened for incl…
