Relational work in multimodal networked interactions on Facebook

2018

Abstract The paper argues that the notion of Relational Work (Locher and Watts 2005) needs to be expanded to be able to account for sociability in the networked interactions afforded by social platforms such as Facebook. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore how the nature of networked interactions impacts the emergence of relational practices therein. Importantly, Relational Work is a language based framework whereas networked interactions are highly multimodal. By applying Norris’ (2004) multimodal framework to the analysis of a Facebook wall event, we show how key sociability functions are carried out by semiotic modes other than language. Furthermore, the analysis shows how relation…

Assessment Capacity, Cultural Validity and Consequential Validity in PISA

2016

Engaging with local communities: Five key lessons that businesses can learn from universities

2020

As businesses are coming to terms with the challenges derived from the Covid-19 crisis, they are realizing the need to do more for and with their local communities than being co-located or having business relationships. Business leaders are learning that engaging with local communities can be helpful in steering their business through crises and helping to prepare for the future. The central idea of this article is that businesses can learn from universities about engaging with local communities. It outlines five key lessons, illustrating them with examples and relating them to key concepts and perspectives from the literature. The emphasis in these lessons is on their potential to make bu…

Brauer correspondent blocks with one simple module

2019

One of the main problems in representation theory is to understand the exact relationship between Brauer corresponding blocks of finite groups. The case where the local correspondent has a unique simple module seems key. We characterize this situation for the principal p-blocks where p is odd.

Optical-data storage-readout technique based on fractal encrypting masks

2009

We propose the use of fractal structured diffractive masks as keys in secure storage-readout systems. A joint transform correlator based on a photorefractive crystal in the Fourier domain is implemented to perform encryption and decryption. We discuss the advantages of encrypting information using this kind of deterministic keys in comparison to conventional random phase masks. Preliminary experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

A Hierarchical Detection and Response System to Enhance Security Against Lethal Cyber-Attacks in UAV Networks

2018

International audience; Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) networks have not yet received considerable research attention. Specifically, security issues are a major concern because such networks, which carry vital information, are prone to various attacks. In this paper, we design and implement a novel intrusion detection and response scheme, which operates at the UAV and ground station levels, to detect malicious anomalies that threaten the network. In this scheme, a set of detection and response techniques are proposed to monitor the UAV behaviors and categorize them into the appropriate list (normal, abnormal, suspect, and malicious) according to the detected cyber-attack. We focus on the m…

Effects ofBacillus thuringiensisCry1Ab and Cry3Aa endotoxins on predatory Coleoptera tested through artificial diet-incorporation bioassays

2009

AbstractTraditional approaches to studying the effects of genetically modified (GM) crops on beneficial insects involve either field assays, comparing insect population levels between control and GM crops or tritrophic bioassays with contaminated insects – usually larvae or eggs of Lepidoptera – as preys. Here, we report the results of a bioassay using an artificial diet, suitable for predatory Coleoptera, to supplyBacillus thuringiensis(Bt) solubilized Cry1Ab and Cry3Aa as well as trypsin-activated Cry1Ab toAtheta coriariaandCryptolaemus montrouzieriadults and young larvae ofAdalia bipunctata. Water, solubilization buffer and trypsin-treated solubilization buffer were used as controls. In …

A distributed real-time data prediction and adaptive sensing approach for wireless sensor networks

2018

International audience; Many approaches have been proposed in the literature to reduce energy consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Influenced by the fact that radio communication and sensing are considered to be the most energy consuming activities in such networks. Most of these approaches focused on either reducing the number of collected data using adaptive sampling techniques or on reducing the number of data transmitted over the network using prediction models. In this article, we propose a novel prediction-based data reduction method. furthermore, we combine it with an adaptive sampling rate technique, allowing us to significantly decrease energy consumption and extend the …
