Fungal Biofilms as a Valuable Target for the Discovery of Natural Products That Cope with the Resistance of Medically Important Fungi—Latest Findings

The development of new antifungal agents that target biofilms is an urgent need. Natural products, mainly from the plant kingdom, represent an invaluable source of these entities. The present review provides an update (2017–May 2021) on the available information on essential oils, propolis, extracts from plants, algae, lichens and microorganisms, compounds from different natural sources and nanosystems containing natural products with the capacity to in vitro or in vivo modulate fungal biofilms. In vitro and in vivo anticryptococcal activities of a new pyrazolo-isothiazole derivative

We investigated the activity of a pyrazolo-isothiazole derivative (G8) against Cryptococcus neoformans. A first screening test showed that G8 at 10 mg/L inhibited the growth of 14 of 15 clinical isolates tested. Killing experiments showed that fungicidal activity was achieved after 8 h of treatment with G8 at concentrations > or =10 mg/L. In a murine model of systemic cryptococcosis, G8 was effective at prolonging survival compared with the controls. Our data indicate that this new derivative has a potential therapeutic role in infections caused by C. neoformans.

Phototrophic Fe(II)-oxidation in the chemocline of a ferruginous meromictic lake

Precambrian Banded Iron Formation (BIF) deposition was conventionally attributed to the precipitation of iron-oxides resulting from the abiotic reaction of ferrous iron (Fe(II)) with photosynthetically produced oxygen. Earliest traces of oxygen date from 2.7 Ga, thus raising questions as to what may have caused BIF precipitation before oxygenic photosynthesis evolved. Epidemiological study ofCryptosporidium parvum in sera of persons from Germany

In a seroprevalence study including 495 sera from persons of all age-groups, the presence of anti-Cryptosporidium parvum antibodies was evaluated in an enzyme immunoassay. Despite the fact that C. parvum is only found in approximately 2% of patients with diarrhea in Germany, specific antibodies could be detected in 15.4% of all samples. This figure indicates that a substantial proportion of the German population has been confronted with this parasite and it raises the question of whether C. parvum is a potential health risk to the general population.

An efficient Chinese remainder theorem based node capture resilience scheme for Mobile WSNs

Node capture attack is a critical issue in Mobile WSNs where attacker-controlled replicas may act maliciously. In this paper, we present a novel Chinese remainder theorem based node capture resilience scheme that can be utilized to discover and revoke captured nodes. Moreover, our scheme can limit the ability of captured nodes to further compromise forward security, backward security, and launch collusion attacks. Detailed analysis shows that our scheme indeed achieves the expected design goals.

Formal Analysis and Model Checking of a Group Authentication Protocol by Scyther

Scyther [1] is designed to check the security and vulnerabilities of security protocols. In this paper, we use Scyther to analyze two discrete logarithm problem (DLP) based group authentication protocols proposed in [2]. These two protocols are claimed to satisfy several security requirements, but only part of them have been checked because of the properties and limitations of Scyther. Towards a Formal Analysis of MQtt Protocol in the Context of Communicating Vehicles

International audience; The paper presents a formal approach to model, analyze, and verify a variant of Message Queue Telemetry Transport protocol (MQtt), dedicated to communicating vehicles (MQtt-CV) that send collected data to automotive infrastructures(subscribers). Our formal approach is based on Promela language and its system verification tool, the model checker SPIN. We propose a slight modification of MQtt protocol to reduce the big volume of data collected and sent by vehicles to infrastructures.
