Risk assessment for parasites in cultures of Diplodus puntazzo (Sparidae) in the Western Mediterranean: Prospects of cross infection with Sparus aura…

2014

The sharpsnout seabream Diplodus puntazzo is of interest in Mediterranean fish farming. Disease is an important problem because parasites can spread quickly in culture conditions and fish often develop high parasite burdens. Here we assess the risk that documented parasites pose to the sustainability of D. puntazzo farming. This study specifically considers metazoan and protist parasites recorded from wild and farmed D. puntazzo in scientific literature. Risk assessment studies involve the identification, characterization and qualitative quantification of the risk in question (parasitoses in this case) and the probability of establishment. We considered the parasite species which may be dif…

A secret sharing scheme for anonymous DNS queries

2013

Since its adoption in the early 90's, several privacy concerns have emerged about the Domain Name System (DNS). By collecting the DNS queries performed by each user, it is possible to characterize habits, interests and other sensitive data of the users. Usually, users resolve their {\em url} requests by querying the DSN server belonging to their Internet Service Provider (ISP) and therefore they assume they can trust it. However, different DNS servers can be used, by revealing sensitive data to a partially untrusted entity that can collect and sell this data for several purposes (target advertising, user profiling, etc.). In this paper we address the possibility to integrate tools in the cu…

INNOVATIVE PERFORMANCE AND INNOVATION SYSTEM OF LATVIA

2021

The research andanalysis of strengths and weaknesses of national innovation system is extremelyimportant to successful and efficient innovation support policymaking.Innovation support policies should take into consideration all specifies ofnational innovation system in the country, not being one-size-fits-all. Untilnow, little analysis on the Latvian innovation system was made. The paper aimsto show Latvian innovative performance and to propose factors forwell-functioning innovation system of Latvia. This research gives apossibility to researchers and policy-makers to investigate the mismatchbetween policies and problems and identify policy gaps. KEY WORDS: innovativeperformance, innovation…

Enhancing Privacy and Authorization Control Scalability in the Grid through Ontologies

2009

The use of data Grids for sharing relevant data has proven to be successful in many research disciplines. However, the use of these environments when personal data are involved (such as in health) is reduced due to its lack of trust. There are many approaches that provide encrypted storages and key shares to prevent the access from unauthorized users. However, these approaches are additional layers that should be managed along with the authorization policies. We present in this paper a privacy-enhancing technique that uses encryption and relates to the structure of the data and their organizations, providing a natural way to propagate authorization and also a framework that fits with many u…

Cryptochrome in Sponges: A Key Molecule Linking Photoreception with Phototransduction

2013

Sponges (phylum: Porifera) react to external light or mechanical signals with contractile or metabolic reactions and are devoid of any nervous or muscular system. Furthermore, elements of a photoreception/phototransduction system exist in those animals. Recently, a cryptochrome-based photoreceptor system has been discovered in the demosponge. The assumption that in sponges the siliceous skeleton acts as a substitution for the lack of a nervous system and allows light signals to be transmitted through its glass fiber network is supported by the findings that the first spicules are efficient light waveguides and the second sponges have the enzymatic machinery for the generation of light. Now…

A New Genetic Approach for the Partitioning Problem in Distributed Virtual Environment Systems

2004

The Partitioning problem is a key issue in the design of Distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) systems based on a server-network architecture. This problem consist of efficiently assigning the clients of the simulation (avatars) to the system servers. Despite the existing literature proposes different evolutive approaches for solving this NP-hard problem, an approach based on genetic algorithms is considered as the current best partitioning mechanism.

Non-linear neuro-inspired circuits and systems: Processing and learning issues

2018

In this chapter the main elements useful for the design and realization of the neural architectures reported in the following chapters will be presented. Considering spiking and non-spiking neurons, the models used for implementing each of them, the synaptic models, the basic learning and plasticity algorithms and the network architectures will be introduced and analysed. The key elements that led to their selection and application in the developed neuro-inspired systems will be discussed briefly.

Feasibility of FPGA accelerated IPsec on cloud

2018

Abstract Hardware acceleration for famous VPN solution, IPsec, has been widely researched already. Still it is not fully covered and the increasing latency, throughput, and feature requirements need further evaluation. We propose an IPsec accelerator architecture in an FPGA and explain the details that need to be considered for a production ready design. This research considers the IPsec packet processing without IKE to be offloaded on an FPGA in an SDN network. Related work performance rates in 64 byte packet size for throughput is 1–2 Gbps with 0.2 ms latency in software, and 1–4 Gbps with unknown latencies for hardware solutions. Our proposed architecture is capable to host 1000 concurre…

Internet of Autonomous Vehicles: Architecture, Features, and Socio-Technological Challenges

2019

Mobility is the backbone of urban life and a vital economic factor in the development of the world. Rapid urbanization and the growth of mega-cities is bringing dramatic changes in the capabilities of vehicles. Innovative solutions like autonomy, electrification, and connectivity are on the horizon. How, then, we can provide ubiquitous connectivity to the legacy and autonomous vehicles? This paper seeks to answer this question by combining recent leaps of innovation in network virtualization with remarkable feats of wireless communications. To do so, this paper proposes a novel paradigm called the Internet of autonomous vehicles (IoAV). We begin painting the picture of IoAV by discussing th…

Synthesis of alkaloids by Stevens rearrangement of nitrile-stabilized ammonium ylides: (±)-laudanosine, (±)-laudanidine, (±)-armepavine, (±)-7-methox…

2013

The Stevens rearrangement of nitrile-stabilized ammonium ylides in conjunction with the reductive removal of the nitrile function permits the facile construction of α-branched amines from α-aminonitriles. We employed this reaction sequence for the preparation of (±)-laudanosine, (±)-laudanidine and (±)-armepavine, (±)-7-methoxycryptopleurine, and (±)-xylopinine from two closely related and readily accessible bicyclic α-aminonitriles. The final products were obtained in high to almost quantitative yields (71–98%) from the quaternary ammonium salts obtained by N-alkylation of these starting materials.
