Naturally occurring polyphenols as building blocks for supramolecular liquid crystals – substitution pattern dominates mesomorphism
2021
A modular supramolecular approach towards hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline assemblies based on naturally occurring polyphenols is reported. The combination of experimental observations, crystallographic studies and semi-empirical analyses of the assemblies provides insight into the structure–property relationships of these materials. Here a direct correlation of the number of donor OH-groups as well as their orientation with the mesomorphic behavior is reported. We discovered that the number and orientation of the OH-groups have a stronger influence on the mesomorphic behavior of the supramolecular assemblies than the connectivity (e.g. stilbenoid or chalconoid) of the hydrogen bond donor…
The Role of Organic Fluorine in the Supramolecular Assembly of Halogenated β-Hydroxysulphoxides Diastereomers
2006
A series of optically pure γ-halogenated β-hydroxysulphoxides containing two stereogenic centers have been prepared, and the X-ray crystal structures have been determined. The conformational behavior in the solid state and the crystal packing of the different β-hydroxysulphoxide diastereoisomers have been determined. The intermolecular and intramolecular interactions present have been studied in both halogenated and nonhalogenated β-hydroxysulphoxides to establish the influence of the halogen atom in the supramolecular structure. The main intermolecular hydrogen bond OH···OS is always present and produces molecular chains. Self-assembly of these chains includes weak CH···F, C−F···F−C, and C…
Design of molecular materials combining magnetic, electrical and optical properties †
2000
The possibilities offered by hybrid functional materials formed by two molecular networks in the context of crystal engineering are illustrated with two different examples: (i) hybrid magnets constructed from combination of an extended ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic inorganic network, with a molecular paramagnetic metal complex acting as template. (ii) Hybrid organic–inorganic compounds combining an organic π-electron donor network that furnishes the pathway for electronic conductivity, with inorganic metal complexes that act as structural and/or magnetic components. These examples illustrate how this hybrid approach allows the design of molecular materials combining non-conventional magnet…
Synthesis, structural analysis, and thermal and spectroscopic studies of methylmalonate-containing zinc(II) complexes
2012
The synthesis, crystal structure, thermal analysis and spectroscopic studies of five zinc(II) complexes of formulae [Zn(Memal)(H2O)]n (1) and [Zn2(L)(Memal)2(H2O)2]n (2-5) [H2Memal = methylmalonic acid, and L = 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy) (2), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) (3), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) (4) and 4,4′-azobispyridine (azpy) (5)] are presented here. The crystal structure of 1 is a three-dimensional arrangement of zinc(II) cations interconnected by methylmalonate groups adopting the μ3-κ2O:κO’:κO”:κO”’ coordination mode to afford a rare (10,3)-d utp-network. The structures of the compounds 2-5 are also three-dimensional and they consist of corrugated square layers of meth…

Formation and distortion of iodidoantimonates(III): the first isolated [SbI6]3- octahedron
2017
The ability to intentionally construct, through different types of interactions, inorganic–organic hybrid materials with desired properties is the main goal of inorganic crystal engineering. The primary deformation, related to intrinsic interactions within inorganic substructure, and the secondary deformation, mainly caused by the hydrogen bond interactions, are both responsible for polyhedral distortions of halogenidoantimonates(III) with organic cations. The evolution of structural parameters, in particular the Sb—I secondary- and O/N/C—H...I hydrogen bonds, as a function of temperature assists in understanding the contribution of those two distortion factors to the irregularity of [SbI6]…

The flexibility of molecular components as a suitable tool in designing extended magnetic systems
2002
In this work we show how the design of n-dimensional magnetic compounds (nD with n = 1–3) can strongly benefit from the use crystal engineering techniques, which can give rive to structures of different shapes with different properties. We focus on the networks built by assembling the malonato-bridged tetranuclear copper(II) units Cu4(mal)4 (mal2− is the dianion of propanedioic acid, H2mal) through the potentially bridging 2,4′-bipyridine (2,4′-bpy), 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy) and pyrazine (pyz). The magneto-structural study of the complexes of formula [Cu4(mal)4(2,4′-bpy)4(H2O)4]·8H2O (1), [Cu4(mal)4(H2O)4(4,4′-bpy)2] (2) (this compound was the subject of a previous report but it is includ…
