Preparation of pH sensitive poly(vinilydenefluoride) porous membranes by grafting of acrylic acid assisted by supercritical carbon dioxide
2012
Free radical grafting of acrylic acid (AA) on poly(vinilydenefluoride) (PVDF) porous membranes was studied at 65°C using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2) as a solvent and delivery agent. The process was initiated by the thermal decomposition of benzoylperoxide (BPO). Spectroscopic analyses confirmed the presence of poly(AA) chains linked to treated membranes. The mass fraction of grafted AA increased with grafting time and BPO concentration while it decreased when the density of the fluid phase was enhanced. A not-monotonic trend was obtained when the effect of the initial AA concentration was studied. The grafting process was accompanied by a reduction of the crystallinity of the PVDF…
Characterisation of films and nanopaper obtained from cellulose synthesised by acetic acid bacteria
2016
Bacterial cellulose (BC) samples were obtained using two culture media (glucose and glucose+fructose) and two bacteria (Komagataeibacter rhaeticus and Komagataeibacter hansenii). Nanopaper was obtained from the BC through oxidation and both were studied to determine the impact of culture media and bacteria strain on nanofiber structure and mechanical properties. AFM and SEM were used to investigate fibre dimensions and network morphology; FTIR and XRD to determine cellulose purity and crystallinity; carboxyl content, degree of polymerisation and zeta potential were used to characterise nanofibers. Tensile testing showed that nanopaper has up to 24 times higher Young's modulus (7.39GPa) than…
Conditioning following powder micronization: influence on particle growth of salbutamol sulfate.
2003
Micronization is a high-energy process that induces changes in the crystallinity of materials. As a result, the crystalline structures on the particles' surface are being destroyed and amorphous areas are formed. After micronization of salbutamol sulfate to be used in dry powder inhalers, only small amounts of amorphous material are produced. Nevertheless, even these small amounts can have important effects on the physical stability of the powder. The amorphous state is thermodynamically unstable and tends to convert to the stable, crystalline state. The recrystallization process of disordered regions on the particles' surface leads to particle growth of milled particles. In this case, brid…
Phase Transition in Niobophosphate Glass-Ceramic
2011
Phase transition during crystallization of glass to glass-ceramic in system P2O5-CaO-Nb2O5-Na2O was studied. Several heating rates were compared – 1, 2, 5, 11 and 20°Cmin-1. DTA, XRD, FTIR and Raman analyses were performed. Niobophosphate glass-ceramic is found to form utterly different crystalline phases depending on maximal heating temperature, heating rate and time of maximal temperature maintenance. Crystallization temperatures of the same phases are strongly dependent on heating rate, while crystallinity of obtained phases is not. At lower temperatures poorly crystalline phosphates (Ca3(PO4)2, Ca10Na(PO4)7, Ca2P2O7) and niobates (NaNbO3 and Nb2O5) are identified. At higher temperatures…
Assessment of pro-oxidant activity of natural phenolic compounds in bio-polyesters
2018
Abstract In this work, natural phenolic compounds, such as Vanillic Acid (VA), Ferulic Acid (FA) and Thymol (Th), at very high concentrations, have been considered as pro-oxidant agents for Polylactic acid (PLA). Specifically, thin films of neat PLA and PLA-based systems containing 2 and 3 wt% of VA, FA and Th have been produced and subjected to accelerated degradation in different environmental conditions. Preliminary characterizations, through rheological, mechanical, optical and morphological analysis, of the formulated PLA-based systems show that the VA and FA, even less the Th, are able to exert a plasticizing action during the processing and subsequently, the PLA crystallinity and rig…
Comparison of the electrochemical properties of hematite thin films prepared by spray pyrolysis and electrodeposition
2015
Abstract This manuscript reports differences between the photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity of hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) photoanodes produced by cathodic electrodeposition (ED) and spray pyrolysis (SP) methods. Both methods yield nanostructured polycrystalline α-Fe 2 O 3 thin films without additional impurity phases. However, α-Fe 2 O 3 produced by ED is characterised to have better crystallinity and higher porosity, which was confirmed by XRD and SEM analysis. Owing to this, α-Fe 2 O 3 obtained by ED generates a photocurrent that is 2.5 times higher than α-Fe 2 O 3 thin films prepared by SP. Furthermore, the influence of the thickness of the α-Fe 2 O 3 thin films on the flat-band potential p…
Low-dimensional non-toxic A 3 Bi 2 X 9 compounds synthesized by a dry mechanochemical route with tunable visible photoluminescence at room temperature
2019
We have synthesized fifteen inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic non-toxic A3Bi2X9 compounds (A = K+, Rb+, Cs+, CH3NH3+ and HC(NH2)2+; X = I−, Br−, Cl−) through dry mechanochemistry. We demonstrate that this synthetic method is very well suited to prepare compounds from poorly soluble precursors, allowing thus the preparation of so far unreported compounds. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates the high crystallinity of the so-formed ternary bismuth halides. Furthermore, we show that, through substitution of the A-cation and X-anion, the bandgap of these compounds can be tuned to absorb throughout the whole visible spectrum. As-prepared powders of Cs3Bi2Br9 and Cs3Bi2I9 without any pass…
Synthesis and Characterization of Highly Luminescent CdSe—Core CdS/Zn0.5Cd0.5S/ZnS Multishell Nanocrystals.
2005
We report on the preparation and structural characterization of CdSe nanocrystals, which are covered by a multishell structure from CdS and ZnS. By using the newly developed successive ion layer adhesion and reaction (SILAR) technique, we could gradually change the shell composition from CdS to ZnS in the radial direction. Because of the stepwise adjustment of the lattice parameters in the radial direction, the resulting nanocrystals show a high crystallinity and are almost perfectly spherical, as was investigated by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Also, due to the radial increase of the respective valence- and conduction-band offsets, the nanocrystals are well electronically pas…
High crystallinity polyethylene obtained in biphasic polymerization using pyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquid
2014
A series of N-n-alkylpyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquids [C n -py][AlCl4] (where n-alkyl = n-butyl, n-hexyl, and n-octyl) was applied as a medium of the Cp2TiCl2 catalyst, activated by AlEtCl2 or AlEt2Cl, to evaluate the influence of the studied ionic liquids on the performance of the biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerization and the properties of the produced polyethylene (PE). The best results were obtained using N-n-butylpyridinium chloroaluminate. The polyethylene obtained in the biphasic polymerization have the high crystallinity, which was confirmed by DSC, WAXS and PALS methods, as well as the bulk density comparable to commercial HDPE. These unique properties results…
Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Unvulcanized Polypropylene Blends with Different Elastomers: Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Terpolymer, Nitrile-Butadi…
2013
In this work, composites of isotactic polypropylene (PP) with three unvulcanized elastomers – terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene (EPDM), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) and copolymer of acrylonitrile-butadiene (NBR) – have been investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to create PP/elastomer blend composites of significantly different compositions (with an excess of PP, intermediate ones, and with an excess of elastomer) and to study the dependence of tensile behaviour and elastic properties on the blends with different component ratio. Tensile properties have been recognized from the stress-strain curves. The changes of elastic modulus have been characterized with r…
