Design and Optimization of Chromophores for Liquid Crystal and Photorefractive Applications

1999

ABSTRACTOrganic chromophores have been exploited for a wide range of discrete optical and electronic functions as well as a growing number of combined opto-electronic functions. We are pursuing development of organic and polymer materials for a range of applications that require properties including liquid crystallinity, second order optical nonlinearity, photorefractivity and, more recently, special nonlinear optical behavior involving molecular chirality.

Organoclay Nanocomposites from Ethylene-Acrylic Acid Copolymers

2006

A study of the structure–property relationships for nanocomposites prepared by melt compounding from ethylene–acrylic acid copolymers of varied composition and molecular architecture, and organoclays modified with different ammonium ions has been made by DSC, POM, SEM, TEM, WAXD, and rheological and mechanical tests. Within the series of clays investigated, the best levels of dispersion were displayed by those organically modified with quaternary ammonium ions containing two long alkyl tails. The relevant nanocomposites were shown to possess mixed exfoliated and intercalated morphology. The spacing of the intercalated clay stacks, most of which comprise few silicate layers, was found to be …

Controlled solvent vapour annealing for polymer electronics

2009

Solvent vapour annealing (SVA) is demonstrated as an attractive method to anneal polymer blend and block copolymer thin films at low temperatures. It is especially suitable for organic electronics, where sensitive materials with strong intermolecular interactions are used. We demonstrate the effect of solvent vapour exposure on the film properties of a perylene bisimide acrylate (PPerAcr) side-chain polymer with strong crystallinity at the perylene bisimide moieties. We record the film thickness, light absorption and fluorescence as a function of the relative solvent vapour pressure. At a certain threshold of relative solvent vapour pressure, we observe a disruption of the π–π stacking, whi…

Analysis of plasticization and reprocessing effects on the segmental cooperativity of polylactide by dielectric thermal spectroscopy

2021

Abstract In the present study, the dielectric properties of both neat and plasticized polylactide submitted to repeated extrusion and injection processes to simulate recycling were analysed. The dielectric relaxation spectrum, consisting of β and α relaxation, revealed the relevance of both acryl-PEG based plasticization and thermo-mechanical degradation induced by repeated extrusion and grinding-injection reprocessing cycles on polylactide (PLA). The β-relaxation has its origin in the intramolecular local motions of pendant groups of the PLA backbone, while the α-relaxation is representative of the intermolecular large-scale segmental motions of the PLA backbone. The addition of acryl-PEG …

PEO/CHCl3. Crystallinity of the Polymer and Vapor Pressure of the Solvent. Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Phenomena

2003

Vapor pressures were measured for the system CHCl3/PEO 1000 (PEO stands for poly(ethylene oxide) and 1000 for Mw in kg/mol) at 25 °C as a function of the weight fraction w of the polymer by means of a combination of headspace sampling and gas chromatography. The establishment of thermodynamic equilibria was assisted by employing thin polymer films. The degrees of crystallinity α of the pure PEO and of the solid polymer contained in the mixtures were determined via DSC. An analogous degree of polymer insolubility β was calculated from the vapor pressures measured in this composition range. The experiments demonstrate that both quantities and their concentration dependence are markedly affect…

Gamma-radiation ageing of a low density polyethylene. Effects of irradiation temperature and dose rate

1993

Abstract Ageing due to gamma radiation of a low density polyethylene at various dose rates and temperatures is studied; the effect of thermal treatment only is also considered. The modifications induced in the molecular and crystallinity behaviour of the polymer are investigated by means of gel extraction, measurements of intrinsic viscosity and thermal analysis. Results indicate the occurrence of both crosslinking and oxidative degradation; the extent of the latter increases on decreasing the irradiation dose rate and on increasing the irradiation temperature. Some exceptions are found because of the increase in the mobility of free radicals at high temperature. These effects modify also t…

Mechanical, structural and magnetic properties of polypropylene/iron ferrite magnetic nanocomposites

2012

In this research, composites of polypropylene (PP) and a relatively small concentrations of iron ferrite (Fe3O4) nanopowder equal to 2, 5 and 10 wt.% have been made. An methacrylate monomer 2,2'-bis-(4-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)phenyl)- propane (BAD) was added at a small amount (3 wt.%) to part of the composites during the thermoplastic mixing. The BAD has been used as a compatibilizing agent on the phase interaction between the filler and the matrix of polypropylene. It has been found that composites have adjustable mechanical, structural and magnetic properties dependent on the content of magnetic filler. Increase of concentration of ferrite particles affects a notable increase of elastic …

Polymeric scaffolds based on blends of poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) with poly-d-l- lactic acid (PLA) prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TI…

2012

Porous scaffolds based on blends of high crystalline Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) with low crystalline poly-D-L-lactic acid (PLA) were prepared via Ther- mally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS), with the aim of exploring the possibility to control the degradation behaviour of the PLA-based scaffold, simultaneously pre- serving the morphological characteristics required for tissue engineering applica- tions. Porous foams with different PLLA/PLA weight ratios (from 95/5 to 60/40) were produced and characterised in terms of pore size, porosity, and thermal properties. The scaffolds present an open porosity, with average pore sizes ranging from 30 to 70 lm. Results showed that, when dealing with a P…

No-Flow Temperature in Injection Molding Simulation

2010

Most injection molding simulation packages use the no-flow temperature (NFT) as a means of determining whether the polymer flows or is solid. The NFT is not well defined, and a standard method for measuring it does not exist. A sensitivity analysis of the filling stage has been carried out with two different packages [VISI Flow (Vero Software Limited, Gloucestershire, UK) and Moldflow (Autodesk, Inc., San Rafael, CA)] to estimate the influence of the NFT on the main processing parameters. The NFT has a large influence on the thickness of the frozen layer, but it does not appreciably affect the filling pressure. Because the NFT affects the frozen layer, an effect on the estimation of shrinka…
