The Vibrio choleare haemolysin anion channel is required for cell vacuolation and death
2002
SummarySeveral strains of Vibrio cholerae secrete ahaemolytic toxin of 63kDa, termed V. cholerae cytolysin (VCC). This toxin causes extensive vacuo-lation and death of cells in culture and forms ananion-selective channel in planar lipid bilayers and incells. Here, we identify inhibitors of the VCC anionchannel and show that the formation of the anionchannel is necessary for the development of the vacuoles and for the cell death induced by this toxin. Using markers of cell organelles, we show that vacuoles derive from different intracellular com-partments and we identify the contribution of lateendosomes and of the trans -Golgi network in vacuolebiogenesis.Introduction The Gram-negative bact…
Grafici di funzione nella Scuola Primaria
2009

2019
In the information society, algorithms are increasingly employed to take crucial decisions that affect people’s life. By including, excluding, classifying and ranking, algorithms decide prizes and penalties, benefits and liabilities, both in the private and in the public sector: health, employment, education, finance, housing, and even criminal justice. Despite being often presented as scientific, objective and neutral, made of numbers, rules and data, this is rarely the case: in fact, algorithms adopt predictive models which involve critical judgements based on questionable opinions, beliefs, values, biases and sometimes prejudices. Algorithmic decisions are also highly resistant to legal …
Molecular mechanisms of endomembrane trafficking in plants
2021
Abstract Endomembrane trafficking is essential for all eukaryotic cells. The best-characterized membrane trafficking organelles include the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi apparatus, early and recycling endosomes, multivesicular body, or late endosome, lysosome/vacuole, and plasma membrane. Although historically plants have given rise to cell biology, our understanding of membrane trafficking has mainly been shaped by the much more studied mammalian and yeast models. Whereas organelles and major protein families that regulate endomembrane trafficking are largely conserved across all eukaryotes, exciting variations are emerging from advances in plant cell biology research. In this review, …
Chromophobe cell renal carcinoma and its variants--a report on 32 cases.
1988
This paper reports on 32 chromophobe cell renal carcinomas observed in 697 renal cell cancers (RCC) of adults (peak in the sixth decade of life). The chromophobe cell-type differs from other types of RCC macroscopically, the cut-surface being predominantly of grey-beige colour. Histologically, there are two variants: one is the typical (light) variant (n = 22) and the other is eosinophilic (n = 10). Both variants have in common (a) reaction of the cytoplasm with Hale's acid iron colloid; (b) electron microscopic detection of cytoplasmic microvesicles (150-300 nm), frequently with 'inner vesicles', and (c) low glycogen content in comparison with the clear cell carcinoma. Immunocytochemical i…
Hereditary Progressive Mucinous Histiocytosis
1994
Background: Hereditary progressive mucinous histiocytosis was first described in 1988. The clinical features of this probably autosomal dominant inherited disease are skin-colored or red pea-sized tumors all over the skin appearing in the first decades of life and increasing gradually in number throughout life. In contrast to other benign histiocytic skin diseases there is no spontaneous tumor resolution. Observation and Results: A 52-year-old woman and her 25-year-old daughter of a further family are reported. Both showed similar longstanding lesions without tumor regression. There was no evidence of visceral involvement. Histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural examinations re…
