The effects of ibuprofen on activated sludge: Shift in bacterial community structure and resistance to ciprofloxacin

2017

Abstract Ibuprofen (IBP) is ranked at the 4th place among 57 pharmaceutical compounds according to the number of citations in prioritization documents. The response of microbial community of activated sludge to IBP was studied at the concentrations of 50–5000 mg/L. Batch incubation was performed in an OxiTop® device for 21 days. The reduction of biological oxygen demand depended on the IBP concentration and varied in the range from 321 to 107 mg O 2 /L. Massive DNA sequencing analysis of the activated sludge revealed that Proteobacteria became more dominant when grown in the presence of IBP. Microbial diversity was reduced in the presence of 500–1000 mg/L IBP, but increased again in the pre…

Cold stress defense in the freshwater sponge Lubomirskia baicalensis

2007

The endemic freshwater sponge Lubomirskia baicalensis lives in Lake Baikal in winter (samples from March have been studied) under complete ice cover at near 0 degrees C, and in summer in open water at 17 degrees C (September). In March, specimens show high metabolic activity as reflected by the production of gametes. L. baicalensis lives in symbiosis with green dinoflagellates, which are related to Gymnodinium sanguineum. Here we show that these dinoflagellates produce the toxin okadaic acid (OA), which is present as a free molecule as well as in a protein-bound state. In metazoans OA inhibits both protein phosphatase-2A and protein phosphatase-1 (PP1). Only cDNA corresponding to PP1 could …

Chemical analysis and antioxidant activity of the essential oils of three Piperaceae species growing in the central region of Cuba.

2013

The present study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of the essential oils of three Piperaceae species collected in the central region of Cuba. The essential oils of Piper aduncum, P. auritum and P. umbellatum leaves, obtained by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components of P. aduncum oil were piperitone (34%), camphor (17.1%), camphene (10.9%), 1,8-cineol (8.7%) and viridiflorol (7.4%), whereas that of P. auritum and P. umbellatum was safrole (71.8 and 26.4%, respectively). The antioxidant properties of the essential oils were also evaluated using several assays for radical scavenging ability (DPPH test and redu…

Novel Bimetallic-Dicyanamide Extended Two- and Three-Dimensional Networks through [Cu(rac-CTH)]2+ Cation Templation

2009

Reaction of [Cu(rac-CTH)]2+ with dicyanamide and Mn2+ or Fe2+ produces three bimetallic extended structures. Complexes 1 and 2, both obtained in the same reaction pot, consist of two different (4,4) two-dimensional (2D) layers, with the [Cu(rac-CTH)(dca)]+ cations noncoordinated and coordinated to the Mn(μ1,5-dca) network for 1 and 2, respectively (rac-CTH = racemic-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Complex 2 shows an unusual monodentate coordination mode through the central amide nitrogen of the dca ligand which is first reported for a polynuclear complex. The structure of 3 consists of a three-dimensional network which can be described as a stacking of layers m…

Effects of electron donating/withdrawing groups in the 5-substituted-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde on the synthesis of neutral cubanes with a NiII4O4core: sy…

2016

Two tetranuclear cubane-like nickel(II) complexes of formula [Ni4(CH3O)4(L1)4(CH3OH)4] (1) and [Ni4(CH3O)4(L2)4(CH3OH)4] (2) (HL1 = 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and HL2 = 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde) have been prepared by the reaction of NiCl2·6H2O with methanolic solutions of HL1 and HL2 in the presence of triethylamine at room temperature. Complexes 1 and 2 have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that 1 and 2 have a cubane-type structural topology with four Ni(II) ions and four methoxo-oxygen atoms regularly alternating at the corners. Each metal ion in 1 and 2 is six-coordinate in a distorte…

A ferromagnetically coupled single hydroxido bridged tetranuclear nickel(II) Schiff base complex incorporating a Ni4O4 cubane core: Crystal structure…

2013

Abstract The new tetranuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni4(OH)(L)(HL)2(CH3OH)1.5(H2O)1.5]·9H2O (1) has been synthesised by the reaction of NiCl2·6H2O and the Schiff base ligand H3L (H3L = (CH3O)(OH)C6H3CH N–C(CH3)(CH2OH)2), prepared by the 1:1 condensation of 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol and o-vanillin, and characterized by different physicochemical methods. Single crystal X-ray structural determination identifies a Ni4O4 cubane moiety as the central part of the complex unit. The presence of a single μ3-hydroxido bridged oxygen occupying only one vertex of the Ni4O4 cubane core is rare in Ni4O4 cubanes (ca. 5% of occurrence). Structural analysis also reveals two similar alkoxido oxygen atoms…

Inhibition of Granulocyte Function by Prednisolone and Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. Quantitative Evaluation with NBT Test and its Correlation…

1980

The effect of prednisolone and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs on PMNL (polymorphonuclear leucocytes) oxidative metabolism was quantified with a newly standardized NBT test, and it was investigated whether these effects correlate with phagocytosing capacity of PMNL. Prednisolone inhibits NBT reduction in dose dependency already at concentrations, which do not interfere with phagocytosis. Thus prednisolone dissociates phagocytosis and phagocytosis-associated oxidative metabolism. High doses of prednisolone also inhibit phagocytosis. These effects of prednisolone are still demonstrable when PMNL are washed after pre-incubation with the drug. The non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (indome…
