Application of Pediococcus acidilactici LUHS29 immobilized in apple pomace matrix for high value wheat-barley sourdough bread

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of Pediococcus acidilactici LUHS29 immobilized in apple pomace in case to apply in barley sourdough fermentation for functional bread production. The strain was phenotypically characterized by the growth and acidification rate, carbohydrate metabolism and resistance to acidic conditions. The effect of immobilized bacterial cells on antioxidant properties of barley sourdough and on the acrylamide content in wheat-barley bread was analyzed. A specific microassay for evaluating hepatic LDH activity in co-cultures of hepatocytes with other cells.

This study describes the development of a simple, rapid and reproducible microassay for determining the intracellular LDH activity of rat hepatocytes present in a co-culture system with other cells. The procedure involves treatment of cellular homogenates with an anti-LDH antiserum that specifically inhibits the LDH activity of rat hepatocytes. The assay is performed in 96-well plates and LDH activity can be measured directly in the same wells using a colorimetric method. Influence of nitrogen and carbon sources on the production of ochratoxin A by ochratoxigenic strains of Aspergillus spp. isolated from grapes.

This work studies the influence of nitrogen and carbon source on ochratoxin A production by three Aspergillus isolates A. ochraceus (Aso2), A. carbonarius (Ac25) and A. tubingensis (Bo66), all isolated from grapes. A basal medium (0.01 g/l FeSO4.7H2O, 0.5 g/l MgSO4.7H2O, 0.5 g/l Na2HPO4.2H2O, 1.0 g/l KCl) was prepared. Arachnid oenocytes: ecdysone synthesis in the legs of harvestmen (Opilionidae).

Cells measuring up to 130 microns have been found in the proximal segments of the femora of all four pairs of walking legs in various species of harvestmen (Phalangium opilio, Leiobonum limbatum, Opilio parietinus, and Opilio ravennae). These cells exhibit all the fine-structural characteristics of insect oenocytes, in particular the conspicuous agranular endoplasmic reticulum. Radioimmunoassay after in vitro incubation of these cells has demonstrated the synthesis of alpha- and beta-ecdysone. These ecdysteroids have been found in the ovaries and tergites of the opisthosoma as well as in the oenocytes.

The morphological aspects of Styela plicata fertilization after treatment with tributyltin(IV) chloride are described by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy investigations. Alterations have been shown both on female and male gametes; spermatozoa, all the egg envelopes and the mitochondria of the egg cortical cytoplasm are modified in relation to incubation time. As a consequence, the damage to gametes blocks sperm-egg interaction and fertilization does not occur. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ambient temperature is assumed to be the major cue used by passerines to synchronize their laying and hatching dates to the expected peak of prey availability. While laying eggs, females are still able to fine-tune their hatching date following increasing or decreasing patterns of ambient temperature, mostly via changes in incubation onse t. Effect of Incubation Body Mass on Reproductive Success and Survival of Two European Diving Ducks: A Test of the Nutrient Limitation Hypothesis

The nutrient limitation hypothesis postulates that variation in nutrient reserves during egg laying and incubation are important predictors of future reproductive success of female waterfowl. We tested one component of this hypothesis in two European diving ducks, Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) and Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), relating body masses of incubating females to subsequent nest success, and to duckling and adult survival. We based our analyses on 3,224 Common Pochards and 1,812 Tufted Ducks captured and weighed during the last two weeks before ducklings hatched at Engure Marsh, Latvia, in 1978-1993. Sequential reaction of a N5O3 octadentate tripodal ligand with Ni(2+) and subsequently with Cu(2+) and azide ligand afforded the first example of a heterobridged (phenoxo/μ(1,1)-azido) pentanuclear heterometallic (Ni4Cu) compound, which exhibits a centrosymmetric vertex-sharing defective double-cubane structure. The study of the magnetic properties reveals that the compound shows ferromagnetic interaction interactions, leading to an S = 9/2 spin ground state. Density functional theory calculations on the X-ray structure and model compounds predict ferromagnetic interactions through the magnetic exchange pathways involving each couple of metal ions.
