Discourses of Europeanness in the reception of the European Capital of Culture events: The case of Pécs 2010
2012
Europeanness has been determined in various ways in academic, political and everyday discussions. The concept has become profoundly current in European Union (EU) policy during the past few decades: the EU is paying more and more interest in creating cultural coherence in Europe. The EU has various cultural instruments, such as the European Capital of Culture programme (ECOC), which aim to produce and strengthen Europeanness and cultural identification with Europe among its citizens. The ECOC programme creates an ideological frame for an urban cultural event: the frame directs the reception and experiences of the festivals, exhibitions and performances in the ECOC. Pécs – a city in souther…
Self and Identity Development during Adolescence across Cultures
2015
The purpose is to show the dynamic of change and stability in the development of identity and self during adolescence. We present some basic differences between the development of self-perceptions and the development of identity according to Erikson's psychosocial formulation. The change and stability dynamics of identity development is subjected to critique from the perspective of the status paradigm as well as more recent theoretical models. The key role of the cultural context's inevitable influence on the development of identity and self-perceptions through the production of relevant cultural variations is also analyzed.
Cultural Identity and Using Music in the Intercultural Educational Process
2014
Abstract Working with music in early childhood education stimulates a child's brain, motor skills and communicative abilities, in addition to their socio-affective relationships. Through songs, a child can start learning about and practicing his or her culture of origin. At this point, the teacher should be aware of pluriculturalism in the classroom and promote awareness of cultural identity as an approach to developing interculturalism. Nursery rhymes, because of their compositional characteristics, are the perfect tool to develop intercultural values and ensure that children not only understand their own culture but also recognise their cultural characteristics in other cultures. A series…
The effects of the English language on the cultural identity of Chinese university students
2011
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää kuinka englannin kieli on vaikuttanut kiinalaisten yliopistotason englannin pääaineopiskelijoiden kulttuuri-identiteettiin.
Geography of Emotions Across the Black Mediterranean: Oral Memories and Dissonant Heritages of Slavery and the Colonial Past
2019
AbstractThis contribution is dedicated to analysing oral memories about the Black Mediterranean through interviews with people from or culturally linked to the Horn of Africa. The aim is to consider how the interviewees make use of archives to voice their feelings about the past and present in Africa and Europe. I introduce the concept of a “geography of emotions” as a set of different perceptions of Europe and its past. The mobilization of these memories in new interpretative perspectives is part of a dissonant heritage which is actively working inside the European borders in order to produce new cultural identities, to reiterate forms of belonging to black diasporic communities, and to in…
Identitetens uppklarnande och kulturvärden
1987
Pulkkinen, L.: Identity achievement and cultural values. Nordisk Psykologi, 1987, 39 (3), 186–202. Relationships between identity achievement and cultural values were studied with 240 young adults. A questionnaire contained a scale for Identity Achievement modified from Crotevant & Adams' (1984) EOM-EIS and questions concerning the importance of various values (e.g. religious, scientific) for one's life, and expectations about and fears of the future. LISREL analyses revealed that Identity Achievement was divided into two components, ethical (friendship, religion) and functional identity (sex roles, politics), rather than ideological and interpersonal identity suggested by Grotevant and Ada…
Temporal fix, hierarchies of work and post-socialist hopes for a better way of life
2021
ABSTRACT This paper proposes to rethink the agriculture–migration nexus through the notions of temporal fix and migrant hierarchies. Its empirical setting is the post-socialist migration of Latvians who move to the Channel Island of Guernsey and to Norway, where they take temporary jobs picking crops such as tomatoes and strawberries. I analyse both how agricultural migrants are viewed by others and how they evaluate themselves. The research material comes from long-term ethnographic engagement with Latvian migrants in these two destinations. In both geographical contexts, temporary agricultural work positions migrants at the bottom of the labour hierarchy. Yet, because of their experience …
The Influence of Cultural Competence on the Interpretations of Territorial Identities in European Capitals of Culture
2014
Abstract The EU’s cultural initiative ‘the European Capital of Culture’ (ECOC) includes high identity political aims. It requires the designated cities to introduce and foster local, regional, and European cultural identities. In addition, the cities have used the designation as an opportunity to promote national cultural identity. Audiences of the ECOC events recognize and interpret different kinds of representations of territorial cultural identities from what the cities have to offer in culture. However, the contents of these interpretations vary drastically in the ECOCs. The article discusses whether the competence of interpreting the representations of territorial cultural identities i…
Haciendo desigualdad de la diferencia: meritocracia y derecho a la identidad cultural. A propósito de la posición del pueblo gitano
2009
The persistent information on high levels of unemployment and premature abandon of school of roma students (with all the precautions with regard to undue generalizations, cases of full integration etc.) allow that the question of the right to a cultural identity turns out to be current, as well as its repercussion in areas as those of education and employment. This work analyzes the implication of the cultural difference, in the concrete case of the roma, taking into account the kind of economica inequality legitimized according to the meritocratic system wich informs the mentioned areas. It is dealing with a dissatisfaction judgement in human rights terms for the situation of a group wich …
Identity politics of the European Capital of Culture initiative and the audience reception of cultural events compared
2014
The European Capital of Culture (ECOC) is one of the EU’s longest running cultural initiatives. It has an identity political focus: The designation as an ECOC requires cities to plan cultural events which foster and bring to the fore local, regional, and European cultures and identities, and moreover, present the local culture as European. How are these identity political aims mediated to the audiences of the ECOC events? The article investigates the reception of cultural events in three recent ECOCs – Pecs2010, Tallinn2011, and Turku2011 – on the basis of a questionnaire study conducted among the audiences. With the methods of statistical and discourse analysis, the article explores how th…
