Serializing Age
2015
Serialized storytelling provides intriguing opportunities for critical representations of age and aging. In contrast to the finite character of films, television narratives can unfold across hundreds of episodes and multiple seasons. Contemporary viewing practices and new media technologies have resulted in complex television narratives, in which experimental temporalities and revisions of narrative linearity and chronological time have become key features. As the first of its kind, this volume investigates how TV series as a powerful cultural medium shape representations of age and aging, such as in »Orange Is The New Black«, »The Wire« or »Desperate Housewives«, to understand what it mean…
A Lexicon for Italian cinema: A conversation about history, theory and critique
2017
This article represents the outcome of a round table organized and conducted by Giacomo Tagliani about the Lessico del cinema Italiano/Lexicon of Italian Cinema (2014–2016). This research and editorial project comprises three volumes and 21 entries that address the history of Italian cinema through an original and challenging approach, namely to detect a list of conceptual clusters able to provide new perspectives over the heritage of Italian films. In this refined version, the authors who took part in that round table, that is, Roberto De Gaetano (also editor of the volumes), Massimiliano Coviello, Luca Venzi and Francesco Zucconi, outline their involvement in the research project, their s…
Depicting life, analysing the power: The ‘actuality’ of Italian cinema
2014
The increasing production of biographical films dealing with power and its figures raises interesting questions about the nature and the aims of political cinema. What are the strategies used to represent people whose public image has completely overlapped to their identity? This matter concerns not only thematic aspects of the biopic genre, but more in depth it discloses fundamental issues at the basis of any theory of cinema. From this point of view, some Italian instances propose original solutions, creating a coherent framework in continuity with a long tradition that has marked the history of Italian thought. This article aims at making a survey of these inputs through the analysis of …

Questioning the Canon and Re-Writing/Re-Righting the Female Colonized Subject: Mary Seacole’s Wonderful Adventures and George Bernard Shaw’s The Adve…
2021
Albeit different in terms of formal solutions and conception, Mary Seacole’s 'Wonderful Adventures' (1857) and G.B. Shaw’s 'The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God' (1932) share an oppositional aesthetics which, in both cases, helps undermine any prevailing representation of the colonial Other. Indeed, Seacole’s and Shaw’s works manipulate the trope of travel in such a way as to overcome traditional conceptions of the literary canon as well as hegemonic visions of subjectivities. In taking into consideration the innovative representation of the Black colonized woman as delineated in both works, the essay aims to show the way in which they present an anti-normative identity mo…

Dendrolatrie. Miti e pratiche dell'immaginario arboreo
2021
