2004
Radio in Spain went through a rather peculiar news-making process between the 11th and 14th of March. Shortly after the terrorist attacks on commuter trains in Madrid during which ETA was blamed, doubts about who was actually behind the bombings produced a crisis in the construction of the news characterized by the absence of a clear perpetrator. The debate on this phenomenon brought about an ideological struggle taken up by the general public who demonstrated their opposition to the information policy of Government. This article is an attempt to analyze the main features of this piece of radiophonic news and how the audience participated on the news-making process. El medio radiofónico exp…

‘Neither male or female, just Falete’: Resistance and queerness on Spanish TV screens
2019
Spanish copla singer Falete is best known for his frequent presence on TV shows, which receive record ratings, and also for the jokes made regarding his appearance. Confronted with normative questions regarding gender and sexuality, Falete’s successful TV career challenges not only binary conceptions of gender but also how we think about TV spectatorship. We argue that liminal spaces, such as the one that Falete inhabits on TV, are useful for unveiling how audiences develop plural and complex forms of identifying with TV stars. Watching Falete on TV, therefore, challenges theories of gender that reify processes of identity formation and identification. In this article, we highlight Falete’s…
Presenting “pissis girls”: Categorisation in a social media video
2015
In Finland, a social category called “pissis girls” has evolved into a cultural concept, used widely in various discourses concerning young women. In the paper, the empirical focus is on how, in the context of a viral video disseminated in social media, a group of young girls are presented as representatives of this category. The video, called ÄM IRK, is a short edited clip of an emergent interaction between young men and girls meeting by chance in a park. Drawing on the notions of membership categorisation, cluster of indexes and indexical field, “enoughness” and authentication, the paper investigates how the edited video, through the means of de- and recontextualisation of the emergent in…
Refugee-background students negotiating academic literacy practices in L2: a dialogical and nexus analytical approach
2022
Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan pakolaistaustaisten opiskelijoiden osallistumista akateemisiin tekstikäytänteisiin toisella kielellä. Näillä opiskelijoilla oli myös aiempaa korkeakoulutusta. Ryhmä on jäänyt aiemmissa tutkimuksissa vähälle huomiolle. Tutkimuksen konteksti on uudenlainen korkeakoulutaustaisille maahanmuuttajille tarkoitettu koulutus, jossa yhdistyvät kieli- ja sisältöopinnot. Tutkin, miten kaksi avainosallistujaa ymmärtää ja ottaa haltuun suomenkielisen laskentatoimen kurssin tekstikäytänteitä osana koulutusta. Teoreettisesti ja metodologisesti tutkimus nojaa dialogiseen lähestymistapaan ja neksusanalyysin viitekehykseen. Ensisijainen aineisto koostui haastatteluista ja vide…
