Simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain in glass fiber/epoxy composites by embedded fiber optic sensors: I. Cure monitoring
2007
In this paper (Part I) the use of fiber optic sensors for real-time monitoring of the cure kinetics of GFRP composites is explored. The proposed sensing system allows the simultaneous measurement of both temperature and strain by monitoring the change in reflected wavelength from two coupled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors that have been embedded into the composite laminate. Instrumented GFRP laminates with 12, 18 and 24 reinforcing plies, respectively, were prepared by means of the vacuum bagging technique. Samples were cured in a thermally controlled oven at 80 degrees C and 30 kPa for 240 min (isothermal stage) and then cooled down to ambient temperature by turning off the heating sour…
Effect of curing time on the performances of hybrid/mixed joints
2013
Abstract The aim of this work is the study of a mixed method used for the joining of aluminum alloys with glass reinforced polymer’s substrates (in the next GFRP). In particular, the technique of self-piercing riveting (in the next SPR) was applied on a co-cured joint in order to evaluate the influence of the time of inserting the rivet on the mechanical behavior of the mixed joints. Three different joints were realized: adhesive by co-curing technique, mechanical by self piercing riveting (in the next SPR) and a mixed one in which the joining techniques (i.e. adhesive and mechanical) were combined. In particular, to determine the optimum time to insert the rivet, three different times from…
Landscape and firewood procurement at the prehistoric and protohistoric site of Ses Païsses (island of Mallorca, Western Mediterranean)
2017
Abstract In this article we present the anthracological study of the settlement of Ses Paisses, located in north-eastern Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean). A total of 25 charcoal samples have been analysed, corresponding to both concentrated (hearth and oven content) and dispersed charcoal fragments. The samples come from four different buildings of the settlement, each one showing different phases of occupation. The site presents a long sequence of occupation (from c.1212-1005 cal BC to the 1st century cal AD), expanding from the last centuries of the Bronze Age (Naviform), through the Early (Talayotic) and Late (Post-Talayotic) Iron Age up to the beginning of Roman occupa…
Middle Palaeolithic flint procurement in Central Mediterranean Iberia: IMplications for human mobility.
2014
Different flint types from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Valencia) are characterized, both macro- and microscopically, and compared with types found at other localities in the region. Although procurement predominantly concerned the immediate vicinity of sites, our results show the presence of the same types in assemblages separated by distances of up to 120 km. The long distances involved are suggestive of a pattern of North-South mobility of human groups along the coastline of central Mediterranean Iberia.

Effects of various hygiene procedures on the surface characteristics of titanium abutments.
1996
The use of cleaning instruments on titanium implants may cause undesired surface alterations. In a qualitative and quantitative assessment of these alterations, 5 titanium implant abutments were treated with a steel curet, a prototype pure titanium curet, an air abrasive polishing system, and an ultrasonic system. Custom-made polymer templates, used to secure the curet to a vertical guide bar and a spring scale to maintain a constant instrument pressure, guaranteed a standardized procedure and reproducible results. The ultrasonic and the air abrasive polishing method were also standardized. Evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed surface alterations for all instruments and…
Vulnerabilities and Threats to Human Security Generated by an Ineffective Educational System
2017
Abstract The present trend towards globalization has led to people changing their views on possible threats to their existence. Nowadays, we witness a diversification of vulnerabilities and threats to human security, as well as a progressive reduction of our resilience. The article attempts to correlate the 5 dimensions of national security, as identified by the Copenhagen School of Security, with the problems of the Romanian educational system, explaining how these problems can become threats to the security of Romanian citizens. It offers an overview of the problems of the Romanian educational system, and the threats and vulnerabilities derived from them towards human security. It also su…

Effect of diode laser irradiation on the attachment rate of periodontal ligament cells: an in vitro study.
2001
The present study is part of a basic research program investigating the cellular effects of an 810 nm GaAlAs-diode laser on human periodontal tissues. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the effects of laser treatment of root surface specimens on the attachment of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in vitro.Root specimens were prepared from periodontally diseased teeth. PDL cells were obtained from human third molar ligaments. Cells were cultured under simple, standardized, and reproducible experimental conditions. One hundred fifty root specimens were scaled and root planed with curets followed by air-powder abrasive treatment; 75 were then lased and 75 served as controls. The irrad…
Replantation of a maxillary second molar after removal of a third molar with a dentigerous cyst: Case report and 12-month follow-up
2014
The aim of this study was to describe the replantation of a maxillary second right molar, which had been removed for surgical reasons in order to remove a dentigerous cyst associated with the adjacent third molar, and the case’s 12-month follow-up. A 51-year-old man presented swelling in the right maxillary area. Radiographic examination showed a large radiolucency in close proximity to the third molar, suggesting a follicular cyst. The third molar was extracted and the cyst underwent curettage. The second molar had to be extracted to enable complete removal of the cyst and to achieve primary closure of the wound, which would have been impossible without repositioning the molar. With this o…
