Il muro di Padova: un muro di solida paura

2009

Il muro di Padova: un muro di solida paura - The Padua Wall: a Wall of Solid Fear, If there is a lucky relevance in the concept of liquid fear, it is the physical image of what, not having a solid content, slides over, trickles through chinks and floods any surface that comes across. If applied to a specific case, the concept materialises in its solid ambivalence. In the Padua case under examination, the municipality makes the choice, explosive from a communication perspective, to par8 tially isolate - with an iron fence, the so-called wall - an inhabited area, considered out of control because of the growing flow of regular and irregular immigrants, of crime episodes, of drug dealing, of a…

I libri, la biblioteca, la città

2021

New adaptive synchronization algorithm for a general class of complex hyperchaotic systems with unknown parameters and its application to secure comm…

2022

Abstract The aim of this report is to investigate an adaptive synchronization (AS) for the general class of complex hyperchaotic models with unknown parameters and a new algorithm to achieve this type of synchronization is proposed. Owing to the intricacy behavior of hyperchaotic models that could be effective in secure communications, the special control based on adaptive laws of parameters is constructed analytically, and the corresponding simulated results are performed to validate the algorithm’s accuracy. The complex Rabinovich model is utilized as an enticing example to examine the proposed synchronization technique. A strategy for secure communication improving the overall cryptosyst…

A segmented regression model for event history data: an application to the fertility patterns in Italy

2009

We propose a segmented discrete-time model for the analysis of event history data in demographic research. Through a unified regression framework, the model provides estimates of the effects of explanatory variables and jointly accommodates flexibly non-proportional differences via segmented relationships. The main appeal relies on ready availability of parameters, changepoints, and slopes, which may provide meaningful and intuitive information on the topic. Furthermore, specific linear constraints on the slopes may also be set to investigate particular patterns. We investigate the intervals between cohabitation and first childbirth and from first to second childbirth using individual data …

Fenomeno migratorio e categorie della statualità. Lo statuto giuridico del migrante

2020

Vox Naturae: The Myth of Animal Nature in the Latin Roman Republic

2016

The paper examines the representation of animals as embodiment of nature in the culture of the late Roman republic. By discussing a selection of passages from Sallust, Cicero and Lucretius in conjunction with other Greek and Latin sources, the paper shows that the typically Western myth of 'animal nature' - the cultural belief that animal mirror a perennial state of nature, as opposed to human society - played a very important role in the ethical debate of the first century BC and took in this period a form which was bound to influence the centuries to come.

Steering Institutionalization through Institutional Work: The Case of an eProcurement System in Indonesian Local Government

2014

Corruption is arguably one of the main hindrances to development. In their effort to combat corruption, governments in developing countries turn to information technology to enhance transparency in decision making. However, implementation of an information system in this context is not straightforward. Premised upon institutional theory, this interpretive case study traces the role of institutional actors in the institutionalization of an eProcurement system in Indonesian local government. It draws on different streams of research on institutional work to develop an interpretive lens to understand what institutional actors do to steer the institutionalization process. It identifies a set of…

A methodology to select the price criterion in public procurement

2015

[EN] The construction sector is a key driver for economic growth in any nation and public procurement is one of its pillars hence the importance of the study and investigation of its mechanisms, especially tendering criteria. Price is the main deciding factor for most tenders and projects must have an appropriate base price relative to market price to avoid problems during the execution of the project. Most research on price criteria has been developed from the point of view of bidders and has discussed the development of tools and methodologies for determining the optimal bid price. In this paper we propose a methodology for public procurement procedures from the point of view of the admin…

Robust Synchronization-Based Graph Clustering

2013

Complex graph data now arises in various fields like social networks, protein-protein interaction networks, ecosystems, etc. To reveal the underlying patterns in graphs, an important task is to partition them into several meaningful clusters. The question is: how can we find the natural partitions of a complex graph which truly reflect the intrinsic patterns? In this paper, we propose RSGC, a novel approach to graph clustering. The key philosophy of RSGC is to consider graph clustering as a dynamic process towards synchronization. For each vertex, it is viewed as an oscillator and interacts with other vertices according to the graph connection information. During the process towards synchro…

Secret versus public reserve price in an “outcry” English procurement auction: Experimental results

2015

Abstract In a set of human experiments, we analyze the impact of the buyer׳s reserve price policy in an online open outcry reverse auction. We measure the impact of revealing or not the reserve price on the buyer׳s expected cost when suppliers may be risk-averse. Results confirm that the optimal public reserve price policy dominates for the buyer when the lowest cost supplier is weakly risk-averse but in contrast with theory, the secret reserve price policy does not dominate when he becomes very risk-averse. Analysis of strategic suppliers׳ bidding behavior shows, in conformity with theory, that they react to the secret reserve price and are more aggressive when they are more risk-averse. T…
