Crucial Role of Extended Criteria Donors in Deceased Donor Single Kidney Transplantation to Face Chronic Shortage in the Heart of the Mediterranean B…
2019
Background: The gap between organ availability and patients on the waiting list for deceased donor kidney transplants has resulted in the wide use of extended criteria donors (ECDs).We aimed to compare the surgical outcomes of single kidney transplantation (KT) performed at our institute with standard criteria donor (SCD) or ECD grafts, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network definition. Patients and methods. Our retrospective analysis studied 115 adult recipients of KT from January 2016 to July 2018, with kidney grafts procured from adult donors after brain or circulatory death, performed at our institute. Among the 2 recipients’ groups, we compared the incidence of …
A proposal for an anonymous living organ donation in Germany.
2003
Abstract In Germany, living organ donation of paired and usually not regenerating organs is restricted by law to related individuals, as well as persons who ‘obviously entertain an especially intimate personal relationship'. When this law was adopted in 1997, the intention of the legislator was to guarantee the free will of the donor and to exclude any trade of organs. Since then the transplantation of cadaveric organs has not increased. Additional organs were donated from living donors. However, for a number of reasons only a limited array of transplantation centers use living organ donation as a supply facing a steadily increasing number of patients with chronic renal failure. Living orga…
Gravimetrically Controlled Efficacy of Subcorial Curettage: A Prospective Study for Treatment of Axillary Hyperhidrosis
2002
Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) proved to be effective for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis by means of gravimetry. Quantitatively controlled studies for surgical treatment are lacking so far.To prospectively test the efficacy of subcorial axillary curettage by gravimetric evaluation of pre- and postsurgical sweat rates.Conservatively pretreated patients received subcorial curettage under tumescent local anesthesia using a sharp spoon. Sweat rates of each axilla were determined gravimetrically before and 4-8 weeks after surgery. Evaluation was performed with respect to baseline sweat rates greater than 50 mg/min (group A), greater than 25 and less than 50 mg/min (group B), and less than 25…
Expression of caveolin-1 in tooth germ, ameloblastoma and ameloblastic carcinoma
2020
Background The caveolin-1 protein (structural component of membrane caveolae) plays important roles in several biological functions, such as endocytosis, cell adhesion, and cell signaling. However, this protein has been associated with mechanisms of tumorigenesis in several neoplasms. The expression patterns and roles of caveolin-1 in the oral epithelium and in embryonic and odontogenic tumor tissues are still unclear. Material and Methods The expression of caveolin-1 was evaluated in samples of the normal gingival epithelium (n=7), human tooth germ (TG) (n=12), ameloblastoma (AM) (n=83), and ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) (n=9) by immunohistochemistry. Additionally, AM samples were analyzed b…
Improved accuracy of hysteroembryoscopic biopsies for karyotyping early missed abortions
2003
Abstract Objective To assess the potential of direct embryo and chorion biopsies obtained by hysteroembryoscopy for karyotyping early missed abortions. Design Clinical prospective descriptive study. Setting Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) Sixty-eight women (71 gestational sacs) with missed abortions. The gestational age on ultrasound was 6.3 weeks (range, 4–10 weeks). Intervention(s) Transcervical hysteroembryoscopy before curettage. Main outcome measure(s) Comparison between the cytogenetic results from hysteroembryoscopic biospies and those of the curettage material. Result(s) Hysteroembryoscopic biopsies could be taken in 97.2% of the gestational sacs. D…
Improved short-term outcomes of kidney transplants in controlled donation after the circulatory determination of death with the use of normothermic r…
2021
Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) allows the in situ perfusion of organs with oxygenated blood in donation after the circulatory determination of death (DCDD). We aimed at evaluating the impact of NRP on the short-term outcomes of kidney transplants in controlled DCDD (cDCDD). This is a multicenter, nationwide, retrospective study comparing cDCDD kidneys obtained with NRP versus the standard rapid recovery (RR) technique. During 2012-2018, 2,302 cDCDD adult kidney transplants were performed in Spain using NRP (n=865) or RR (n=1,437). The study groups differed in donor and recipient age, warm and cold ischemic time and use of ex situ machine perfusion. Transplants in the NRP group were m…
Myxofibroma of the maxilla. Reconstruction with iliac crest graft and dental implants after tumor resection
2010
Odontogenic fibromyxomas are benign odontogenic tumors of mesenchymal origin of rare presentation in the oral cavity, which exhibit locally aggressive behavior and are prone to local recurrence. The controversy has mainly been on therapeutic management with recommendations varying, depending on the clinical cases, from simple curettage of lesion to segmental bone resection. We present a case report describing the reconstruction of an osseous defect in the maxilla and the restoration with dental implants in a 32 year old female patient after radical surgical excision due to an odontogenic fibromyxoma with locally aggressive behavior. The primary reconstruction of maxillary discontinuity defe…
FISSIT (Fistula Surgery in Italy) study: A retrospective survey on the surgical management of anal fistulas in Italy over the last 15 years
2021
Background: Surgical treatment of anal fistulas is still a challenge. The aims of this study were to evaluate the adoption and healing rates for the different surgical techniques used in Italy over the past 15 years. Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective observational study of patients affected by simple and complex anal fistulas of cryptoglandular origin who were surgically treated in the period 2003–2017. Surgical techniques were grouped as sphincter-cutting or sphincter-sparing and as technology-assisted or techno-free. All patients included in the study were followed for at least 12 months. Results: A total of 9,536 patients (5,520 simple; 4,016 complex fistulas) entered the stu…

Investigation of RELAP Capability to Simulate the LBE Cooling System Thermal-Hydraulic
2004
The paper subject regards the validation of the RELAP5/Mod3.2.2B, the best estimate code modified to deal with fluids of interest for the XADS (eXperimental Accelerator Driven System), a Lead Bismuth Eutettic alloy (LBE) cooled ADS design set up at Ansaldo Industry. The validation will be made exploiting the experimental program carried out on support of XADS design and MEGAPIE experiment, at the ENEA Research Centre of Brasimone (Italy), making use of CHEOPE and CIRCE facilities. The comparison between experimental results and post test calculations allows the check ofthe code capability in simulating the 1Dym fluid-dynamic of heavy metals. In particular, CHEOPE tests have provided data fa…
