Cervical pregnancy in assisted reproduction: an analysis of risk factors in 91,067 ongoing pregnancies
2019
Abstract Research question What is the frequency of cervical pregnancy in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and what are the risk factors? Design Case-control study of women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) at 25 private assisted reproduction clinics run by the same group in Spain. Two control groups (tubal ectopic pregnancies and intrauterine pregnancies) were established. The main outcome measure was frequency of cervical pregnancy. Demographic, clinical factors and IVF parameters were assessed for their influence on cervical pregnancy risk. Results Thirty-two clinical pregnancies were achieved out of 91,067 ongoing pregnancies, yielding a rate of …
Management of primary ameloblastoma of the jaw: a 15 years' experience.
2012
AIM: The aim of this retrospective study was to describe our 15-year experience in the management of primary ameloblastoma of the jaw. METHODS: We investigated 26 patients who had undergone surgical treatment for a single lesion, comprising six lesions of the maxillary bone and 20 tumors of the mandible: 73% had a radiolucent multilocular lesion; 23% a unicystic lesion; and 4% had an extraosseous form of the tumor. The smaller lesions (diameter <3 cm) were treated by conservative approaches; the larger lesions required radical surgical resection. Two groups were created according to whether the patients had received conservative or aggressive surgery. RESULTS: The recurrence rate was estima…
Management of primary odontogenic myxoma
2018
BACKGROUND: This retrospective study describes our experience in the management of odontogenic myxoma. METHODS: Thirty-four patients (23 female and 11 male) with single lesions were treated. Thirty-three patients were adults (mean age 33.5 years) and one child (age 6 years). Male:female ratio was 1:2. Different surgical procedures were used to treat the tumors. 11 lesions were treated by marginal osteotomy, 12 lesions by enucleation and curettage, 11 lesions by radical treatment (segmental or block resection). The follow-up period was 5-years. RESULTS: The success rate was 73.5%. The Kaplan-Meier method was applied to examine the outcome of the treatment. Analysis showed a significant diffe…
Juvenile ossifying fibroma of the maxillofacial region: analysis of clinico-pathological features and management
2021
Background The diagnosis and management of juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) remains a highly debated topic with paucity of studies with long-term follow-up, hence the aim of this study was to report on the clinico-pathological features and management of these neoplasms. Material and Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on all histopathologically confirmed JOF presenting at two tertiary hospitals in Cape Town, South Africa over a period of 39 years. Clinical, demographic, histopathological and radiological features were analyzed. Surgical methods were documented and a minimum post-operative follow-up of 12 months was a prerequisite. Results Seventeen patients met the inclusion crit…
Gravimetrically Controlled Efficacy of Subcorial Curettage: A Prospective Study for Treatment of Axillary Hyperhidrosis
2002
Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) proved to be effective for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis by means of gravimetry. Quantitatively controlled studies for surgical treatment are lacking so far.To prospectively test the efficacy of subcorial axillary curettage by gravimetric evaluation of pre- and postsurgical sweat rates.Conservatively pretreated patients received subcorial curettage under tumescent local anesthesia using a sharp spoon. Sweat rates of each axilla were determined gravimetrically before and 4-8 weeks after surgery. Evaluation was performed with respect to baseline sweat rates greater than 50 mg/min (group A), greater than 25 and less than 50 mg/min (group B), and less than 25…
Expression of caveolin-1 in tooth germ, ameloblastoma and ameloblastic carcinoma
2020
Background The caveolin-1 protein (structural component of membrane caveolae) plays important roles in several biological functions, such as endocytosis, cell adhesion, and cell signaling. However, this protein has been associated with mechanisms of tumorigenesis in several neoplasms. The expression patterns and roles of caveolin-1 in the oral epithelium and in embryonic and odontogenic tumor tissues are still unclear. Material and Methods The expression of caveolin-1 was evaluated in samples of the normal gingival epithelium (n=7), human tooth germ (TG) (n=12), ameloblastoma (AM) (n=83), and ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) (n=9) by immunohistochemistry. Additionally, AM samples were analyzed b…
Improved accuracy of hysteroembryoscopic biopsies for karyotyping early missed abortions
2003
Abstract Objective To assess the potential of direct embryo and chorion biopsies obtained by hysteroembryoscopy for karyotyping early missed abortions. Design Clinical prospective descriptive study. Setting Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) Sixty-eight women (71 gestational sacs) with missed abortions. The gestational age on ultrasound was 6.3 weeks (range, 4–10 weeks). Intervention(s) Transcervical hysteroembryoscopy before curettage. Main outcome measure(s) Comparison between the cytogenetic results from hysteroembryoscopic biospies and those of the curettage material. Result(s) Hysteroembryoscopic biopsies could be taken in 97.2% of the gestational sacs. D…
Myxofibroma of the maxilla. Reconstruction with iliac crest graft and dental implants after tumor resection
2010
Odontogenic fibromyxomas are benign odontogenic tumors of mesenchymal origin of rare presentation in the oral cavity, which exhibit locally aggressive behavior and are prone to local recurrence. The controversy has mainly been on therapeutic management with recommendations varying, depending on the clinical cases, from simple curettage of lesion to segmental bone resection. We present a case report describing the reconstruction of an osseous defect in the maxilla and the restoration with dental implants in a 32 year old female patient after radical surgical excision due to an odontogenic fibromyxoma with locally aggressive behavior. The primary reconstruction of maxillary discontinuity defe…
Prospective Comparison of Loop Excision under Colposcopic Guidance versus Vitom Guidance.
2012
Background: Aim of the study was to compare the quality of loop excision using a colposcope with results using the VITOM system. Results compared included cervical volume removed, intra- and postoperative complications, and positive resection margins. Methods: A total of 200 patients with histologically confirmed high-grade cervical premalignant lesions, persistent atypical cytological results and/or suspicious colposcopic findings, and cytological and histological discrepancies were included in the study. In transformation zone type 1 (T1) only a superficial cone biopsy was done, in zones type 2 and 3 (T2 and T3) a superficial outside cone biopsy or a deeper inside cone biopsy were done re…
F117Hystero-embryoscopic findings in early nonviable pregnancies
2000
Background A high proportion of early pregnancy losses are associated to abnormal embryo development. However, chromosomal analysis of routine curettage samples are of limited value; and histopathological examinations of the embryos are rarely performed in clinical practice. Method A transcervical hystero-embryoscopy was performed prior to the curettage in 31 nonviable first-trimester pregnancies and a control group of 5 early terminations of pregnancy. In the study group, the estimated gestational age according to the ultrasound findings was 6.7 (4–9) menstrual weeks. Direct biopsies of different gestational structures were taken during the endoscopic procedure. Results In nonviable pregna…
