Weaning Premature Infants from Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure - Current Practice and Scientific Evidence.

2017

Abstract Objective In the past decade, a number of trials have been conducted to determine the optimal strategy of weaning premature infants from nasal continuous airway pressure (nCPAP). However, a paucity of information exists on how weaning is actually performed in clinical routine. Aim of this study was to investigate the current practice of weaning premature infants from nCPAP in Germany. Methods An online survey was performed in German tertiary care neonatal units. Results All 160 German tertiary care units were contacted. Replies were retrieved from 85/160 (53%) units, of which 83/160 (52%) completed the questionnaire. 66/83 (80%) respondents indicated to wean without the use of form…

The Use of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients With Urothelial Carcinoma of the Bladder: Current Practice Among Clinicians.

2017

Abstract Introduction Guidelines recommend neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) before radical cystectomy (RC) in patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder in clinical stages T2-T4a, cN0M0. We examined the frequency and current practice of NAC and sought to identify predictors for the use of NAC in a prospective contemporary cohort. Materials and Methods We analyzed prospective data from 679 patients in the PROMETRICS (PROspective MulticEnTer RadIcal Cystectomy Series 2011) database. All patients underwent RC in 2011. Uni- and multivariable regression analyses identified predictors of NAC application. Furthermore, a questionnaire was used to evaluate the practice patterns of NAC at the PR…

What is the value of eGovernment – and how can we actually realize it?

2009

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to promote academic discourse around the understanding of the concept of value of eGovernment and how a diverse set of benefits or values can be realized from eGovernment efforts.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is designed as a viewpoint paper with emphasis on grounding a set of arguments on current practice and relevant scholarly papers.FindingsAlthough not based on a formal, structured review, the paper proposes that the concept of value in relation to eGovernment is insufficiently discussed and defined in the eGovernment literature. Based on the high failure rates of eGovernment efforts, it further proposes that structured approaches to benefits r…

La religión del cuerpo-mercancía: ¿un nuevo opio del pueblo?

2018

The commercial exploitation or more precisely the total capitalist management of the human body erects this as a universal divinity. The direct consequence of this generalized corporal capitalism is the massive depoliticization of the body and, often, the reflection that is dedicated to it. In this article, we seek to reflect on the current practices of bodily modifications within the framework of the changes in the regimes of neoliberal governance in recent decades. This reflection is guided by the revision of central texts of critical theory

Pathogen safety of long-term treatments for bleeding disorders: still relevant to current practice

2013

Hemophilia defines a group of hereditary bleeding disorders: hemophilia A (deficiency of Factor VIII, FVIII), hemophilia B (deficiency of FIX), and para-hemophilia (deficiency of FV). These result from mutations in clotting factor genes. As in the large majority of bleeding disorders ([Table 1][1

Robotic i.v. medication compounding: Recommendations from the international community of APOTECAchemo users.

2016

Purpose The development of recommendations for advancing automated i.v. medication compounding is described. Summary Managing the shift from manual to robotic compounding of i.v. therapies requires an awareness of how automation affects practice and how to best implement robotics into current practice. An international panel of pharmacy professionals, researchers, and technology leaders with experience in i.v. robotics collaborated during a two-day meeting in August 2014 to define a general set of principles to broaden the understanding of the fundamental elements of robotic compounding worldwide. Participants were divided into four working groups (technology and safety; drugs and products;…

Management of the paediatric airway: new developments

2006

During the last 2 years, some interesting new devices have been made available to improve airway management in children and infants, and several studies have advanced our understanding concerning risks and benefits of the current practice in the field. Certain risk factors for airway related problems during anaesthesia in children having a cold have been identified, and new aspects of the controversy concerning the use of cuffed endotracheal tubes in children presented. Novel video-assisted systems have been introduced for the management of the difficult airway in paediatric patients, and new applications for well known devices have been suggested, such as the laryngeal mask airway serving …

Current status of implementation of self-administration training in various regions of Europe, Canada and the USA in the management of hereditary ang…

2013

Results from a 16-question survey about self-administration of hereditary angioedema (HAE) therapy, administered in Europe, Canada and the USA, were used to guide discussion at an international HAE expert meeting. The aim was to capture information about current practice in self-administered HAE therapy in these countries, including self-administration training, the key benefits of switching to self-administration, the barriers to self-administration and trends in self-administration. Overall, switching to self-administration therapy is looked upon favourably from both patient and clinician perspectives by virtue of the potential improvement in quality of life arising from optimisation of t…

A survey on current practice in the neurosurgical management of preterm infants with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus in Germany.

2012

Background and Study Aims  Different approaches to the management of preterm infants with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) are described in the literature. Likewise, neurosurgical and pediatric surgical departments in German hospitals use different methods to treat these patients. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the current situation regarding the management of PHH, which is a first and essential step toward the development of standards of practice. Patients and Methods  In the second half of 2009, we sent standardized questionnaires to 139 neurosurgical departments (number of returned questionnaires: 98) and 73 pediatric surgical departments (returned questionnaires: 62) t…

Current practice in regional anaesthesia in Germany

2005

Several new techniques and agents (e.g. ropivacaine) have been introduced in regional anaesthesia to improve patients outcome and safety. The beneficial effects on patient outcome are clear with these techniques, however, no information is available about their pattern and frequency of use in clinical practice. This study presents data concerning the current practice of regional anaesthesia in Germany.A questionnaire was sent to every German anaesthesia department (n = 1381). Questions focused on the frequency and range of regional anaesthetic procedures employed, with attention also to the organizational structural of the individual institution.Six hundred and sixty-seven questionnaires we…
