Discrete Mathematics in Lower School Grades? Situation and Possibilities in Italy

This paper presents an overview of the Italian situation in teaching discrete mathematics in primary and middle school, taking into account the national teaching guidelines and their connection with the subject. We describe research conducted with about 150 teachers, interviewed in a preliminary questionnaire. The data collected shows, for all teaching grades, interest in having more discrete mathematics in the school curriculum even if there are some difficulties in teaching it and in inserting it in the usual mathematical activities at school, mostly related to teachers’ knowledge and self-confidence about the subject. En concreto, el enfoque clínico puede servir para reequilibrar los fines que debería tener la educación jurídica: formar juristas preparados y competentes, profesionales valiosos, y buenos ciudadanos. En el texto, a partir de las experiencias en universidades de todo el mundo y recientemente en nuestro país, se exploran algunas sugerencias para su incorporación en el proceso formativo de los juristas y para fomentar su futura sostenibilidad.

Climate Change: An Educational Proposal Integrating the Physical and Social Sciences

Abstract The scientific community has been debating climate change for at least twenty years. The EU has recommended a set of innovative reforms to science teaching, incorporating environmental issues in the scientific curriculum, answering the need for making school a place of civic education. This paper focuses on the presentation of materials designed to foster both deep understanding of the basic concepts involved in climate change as well as critical thinking for addressing some cognitive and emotional barriers that have been proved to hinder individual behavioural reactions.

Perceptions and Attitudes of Students of Teacher-training towards Environment and Sustainability

Abstract This paper report on a questionnaire survey at three Universities of the Comunidad Valenciana,Spain, on the current baseline situation in order to introduce sustainability across university's curricula. The objective data enabled us to know the situation of students in relation to introduce sustainability in both Early Childhood Education Teacher Degree and Primary Education Teacher Degree. A total of 922 students answered the survey. A majority of respondents were not aware of the impact of their daily activities on the environment. With regard to the introduction of sustainability in teaching, the majority of students said that it is an appropriate measure.

Developing preschoolers' social skills through cross-cultural physical education intervention

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in children's social skills after their participation in a physical education programme named ESPEC (‘Early Steps’ Physical Education Curriculum). The evaluators of the children's social skills were the trained educators who implemented the curriculum as well as parents of the participating children. This study was conducted in three European countries and was part of a European transnational project. The participants were 286 preschoolers from Cyprus, Greece and Italy.
