The Education of VET Teachers and Trainers
2019
In this chapter, we describe the processes and curricula of initial education of VET teachers and trainers, its features and requirements, describing the differences between formal VET teachers and non-formal vocational trainers. We introduce the initial education required to become formal VET teachers and non-formal vocational trainers in the past three decades in Spain, with particular attention to their technical and pedagogical background. We then briefly explain the continuing education chances addressed to these teachers and trainers. We finish the chapter by pointing to the challenges of the education of VET teachers and trainers, while we suggest that VET teachers have to struggle t…

Therefore, the aim was to develop a consensus text based on the European Core Curriculum, updated, and adapted to the characteristics of the Spanish university environment. MATERIALS AND METHODS A Spanish Cariology Curriculum Group (SCCG) was set up with members of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and Oral Public Health (SESPO), Spanish Society of Conservative and Aesthetic Dentistry (SEOC) and Spanish Society of Paediatric Dentistry (SEOP) and university experts to adapt the European Core Curriculum in Cariology for undergraduate denta…
The role of guidance in student engagement with chemistry studies
2019
During recent years, the Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä has made an extensive effort to support chemistry students’ first study year. The first-year curriculum includes enhanced study counselling course, intensive orientation course and support for academic study skills via a specific course. In this study, the effects of the revisions were studied by exploring the chemistry students study continuation and what factors contributed to it. In 2015 to 2017, data were collected from first-year chemistry students (n = 106), who completed a questionnaire at the beginning and at the end of their first semester. The results show that the percentage of dropout rates after t…
Helps from flipped classroom in learning suturing skill: The medical students' perspective.

The variation may cause by different subjects or different course design. Moreover, those studies did not explain how the association among different domains of learning objective was in FCs. The purpose of this study was to explore the help of learning domains from a FC of suturing skill in year-5 medical students. Design This study determined sample size according to statistical power. A minimum number of 77 participants for regression analysis are needed. Therefore, this study enrolled 78 medical students in a 2-hour suturing course, which consisted …
A Culturally Sensitive Approach to Promoting Initial Literacy Development in Africa : Ongoing and Planned Research and Development at the University …
2017
A four-year research and development program at CAPOLSA (the Centre for the Promotion of Literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa) was inspired by widespread dissatisfaction with poor literacy outcomes of mass basic schooling in Zambia and sought to test the generalizability of a scientifically grounded, computer-mediated instructional resource developed in Finland, for effective intervention in an African society where different linguistic and educational conditions obtain. Specific challenges and opportunities posed by the local sociocultural context included the prevalence of multilingualism, the relatively transparent orthographies of local languages, and poor infrastructure of the public school …
ABSTRACT: The presen…
Two finnish girls and mathematics: Similar achievement level, same core curriculum, different competences
2015
Mathematical thinking and problem solving are essential parts of learning mathematics described in the Finnish National Core Curriculum for Basic Education. Evaluations on both have been done at national and international level. However, in a request for deeper understanding of pupils’ mathematical thinking we need to move beyond paper tests. This paper is a first look into the mathematical thinking of two Finnish girls, Emma and Nora, in their final year of Finnish comprehensive school. After solving a real-life situated problem in a classroom, the girls talk about mathematics and problem solving in an interview. The focus of the analysis is on the learning objectives, core content and fin…

The competency-based approach in developing countries : effects of curricular reforms in Sub-Saharan Africa
2013
For decades, all analyzes converge on the idea of the relative inefficiency of education systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Dropout, repetition, overstaffing, low quality of learning student failure and obsolescence of facilities, teaching materials and teachers, including sometimes the levels and quality of education remain somewhat uncertain, inadequate educational programs. In short, these are some of the ills that plague these systems and confirm the findings made by many reports. Given this weakness finding, educational authorities, supported by international aid mobilized in many countries to improve their systems to qualitatively, but also quantitatively equity because we must not forget…
