Emotions in second language learning as seen in autobiographical narratives written by university students : a discursive study
2016

External sustainability in Spanish economy: bubbles and crises, 1970–2020
2023
We address the issue of the sustainability Spain’s exter-nal debt, using data for the period 1970–2020. To detect episodes of potentially explosive behavior of the Spanish net foreign assets over GDP ratio and the current account balance over GDP ratio, as well as episodes of external adjustments over this long period, we employ a recursive unit root test approach. Our empirical analysis leads us to conclude that there is some evidence of bubbles in the ratio between Spanish net foreign assets and the GDP. In contrast, the evidence that the ratio between the Spanish current account balance and the GDP had explosive subperiods is very weak. The episode of explosive behavior identified in the…
Forms of gastronomic camouflage: veridiction in the kitchen
2022
In this essay, we analyse the regimes of truth and the forms of culinary camouflage inscribed in some signature dishes by several well-known Italian chefs, whose work is emblematic of the various fictional trends in gastronomy. In doing so, we will keep in mind the so-called semiotic square of veridiction that discursive semiotics has been proposing and using for some time. The analysis reveals how the gastronomic discourse of the Italian haute cousine produces effects of illusion, secrecy, falsehood and truth. The concurrence of these veridiction modes allows for an explicit model which accounts for the various styles of camouflage and thus describes current tendencies in contemporary cuis…
Investigating the Heartbeat-evoked cortical responses through parametric Time-Varying Information Measures
2022
Recent studies showed that the information coming from the heart is constantly processed by the brain. One index to study this process is the heartbeat-evoked potential (HEP), represented by an event-related potential component related to the cortical processing of the heartbeat. In this study we propose an approach to investigate the heartbeat-evoked EEG responses, based on quantifying the changes induced by the heartbeat on the predictability of the brain dynamics. The regularity of EEG signals is assessed through the Information Storage (IS) computed with a time-varying approach able to derive the temporal profile of the measure for each time point. Results show a modulation in the regul…
Pareto or log-normal? A recursive-truncation approach to the distribution of (all) cities
2012
Traditionally, it is assumed that the population size of cities in a country follows a Pareto distribution. This assumption is typically supported by finding evidence of Zipf's Law. Recent studies question this finding, highlighting that, while the Pareto distribution may fit reasonably well when the data is truncated at the upper tail, i.e. for the largest cities of a country, the log-normal distribution may apply when all cities are considered. Moreover, conclusions may be sensitive to the choice of a particular truncation threshold, a yet overlooked issue in the literature. In this paper, then, we reassess the city size distribution in relation to its sensitivity to the choice of truncat…
English is ‘the language everybody shares’ but it is ‘my native language’ : language ideologies and interpersonal relationships among students in int…
2023
Englanninkielisten opiskelijoiden lisääntyvän monimuotoisuuden myötä kieli-ideologioita on tutkittu mahdollisena opiskelijoiden välisen epätasa-arvon rakentajana. Analysoin kahta fokusryhmäkeskustelua, joiden osallistujat ovat erään suomalaisen yliopiston kansainvälisten englanninkielisten maisteriohjelmien opiskelijoita. Tutkin opiskelijoiden puhetta kriittisen diskursiivisen psykologian avulla tarkoituksenani ymmärtää mahdollisia yhtymäkohtia kieli-ideologioide…
How hotel websites may discursively adjust to customer preferences using online criticism
2019
This paper explores discursive ways in which hotels may improve their own websites using online criticism to adjust to customer preferences. To this end, a combined method was used, consisting of a netnographic approach (Kozinet, 2010; Mkono, 2011, 2012) together with an interpersonal discourse framework (Hyland, 2008) applied to e-tourism genres (Suau-Jiménez, 2012, 2016). Four hotel websites, together with 200 corresponding negative reviews from TripAdvisor, were diachronically analyzed to identify common topics. Attitudinals were sough, being the core markers of online critiques, as well as boosters, acting as enhancing markers in hotel websites and paralleling criticized topics. Results…
