Hamiltonian structural analysis of curved beams with or without generalized two-parameter foundation

2013

The solution of curved Timoshenko beams with or without generalized two-parameter elastic foundation is presented. Beam can be subjected to any kind of loads and imposed external actions, distributed or concentrated along the beam. It can have external and internal restraints and any kind of internal kinematical or mechanical discontinuity. Moreover, the beam may have any spatial curved geometry, by dividing the entire structure into segments of constant curvature and constant elastic properties, each segment resting or not on elastic foundation. The foundation has six parameters like a generalized Winkler soil with the addition of other two parameters involving the link between settlements…

Unified theory for analysis of curved thin-walled girders with open and closed cross section through HSA method

2016

Abstract The behaviour of thin-walled structures is deeply influenced by non-uniform torsion and cross section distortion. In this paper the extension of the Hamiltonian Structural Analysis (HSA) Method to thin-walled straight and curved beams is presented. The proposed method solves the structural elastic problem of thin-walled beams through the definition of a Hamiltonian system composed of 1st order differential equations. The method allows engineers to solve the elastic problem by introducing the degrees of freedom and the corresponding compatibility equations, founding equilibrium equations in the variational form. The methodology is explained in the framework of the so-called Generali…

Atypical titration curves for GaAl12Keggin-ions explained by a joint experimental and simulation approach

2018

Although they have been widely used as models for oxide surfaces, the deprotonation behaviors of the Keggin-ions (MeAl127+) and typical oxide surfaces are very different. On Keggin-ions, the deprotonation occurs over a very narrow pH range at odds with the broad charging curve of larger oxide surfaces. Depending on the Me concentration, the deprotonation curve levels off sooner (high Me concentration) or later (for low Me concentration). The leveling off shows the onset of aggregation before which the Keggin-ions are present as individual units. We show that the atypical titration data previously observed for some GaAl12 solutions in comparison to the originally reported data can be explain…

Intrusion of nonwetting liquid in paper

2007

The saturation curve of a sample of paper board was measured with mercury-intrusion porosimetry, and the three-dimensional structure of its pore space was determined by x-ray tomographic imaging. Ab initio numerical simulation of intrusion on the tomographic reconstruction, based on the lattice-Boltzmann method, was in excellent agreement with the measured saturation curve. A numerical invasion-percolation simulation in the same tomographic reconstruction showed good agreement with the lattice-Boltzmann simulation. The access function of the sample, determined from the saturation curve and the pore-throat distribution determined from the tomographic reconstruction, indicated that the ink-bo…

The Relationship Between Tooth Size Discrepancy and Archform Classification in Orthodontic Patients

2015

Background: To determine the relationship between clinically significant tooth size discrepancies (TSD) and archform classification in orthodontic patients. Material and Methods: Two hundred and forty consecutive sets of pre-treatment orthodontic study models were scanned and landmarked. All models had permanent teeth erupted from first molar to first molar in both arches. Sixty sets of images were classified into two groups of 30 according to the presence (group 1) or absence (group 2) of a clinically significant overall or anterior TSD (>2 SD from Bolton’s original means). Mean upper and lower archforms were created for each group using a fourth degree polynomial curve. Upper and lower ar…

Soil moisture influences sorptivity and water repellency of topsoil aggregates in native grasslands

2017

Abstract Water repellency is associated to coating of soil particles by hydrophobic substances, usually of organic origin, affecting water dynamics in soil matrix. We analyzed the effect of water repellency on water sorptivity of topsoil aggregates of six soil types under three initial moisture conditions (10 kPa, 100 kPa, and air-dried). Undisturbed soil samples were collected to evaluate sorptivity in the 0–5 cm soil layer at different locations in Pampa Biome in southern Brazil. Disturbed soil samples were also collected for soil particle size distribution, particle density and organic matter content. Sorptivity test was conducted in a tension micro-infiltrometer, using distilled water a…

Mode I translaminar fracture toughness of high performance laminated biocomposites reinforced by sisal fibers: Accurate measurement approach and lay-…

2022

Abstract The present work performs a systematic experimental analysis of the translaminar fracture behavior of high performance biocomposites constituted by green epoxy reinforced by sisal fibers, by varying the main influence parameters as fiber concentration and lay-up. Despite the corrective function properly introduced to take into account the anisotropy as well as the use of the equivalent crack length, the study shows that the LEFM does not give accurate estimations of the fracture toughness, because the extension of the near tip damaged zone is higher than the singular dominated one. Accurate estimations can be obtained instead by the proposed modified area method that takes into acc…

Evaluation of toughness by finite fracture mechanics from crack onset strain of brittle coatings on polymers

2008

Crack onset strain measurements of a confined layer in tension provide the means for layer toughness estimation. The procedure can be simplified if steady-state conditions prevail starting from the commencement of crack propagation, an assumption frequently employed in energy release rate evaluation. It is demonstrated, by numerical analysis of experimental data, that an estimate of the defect size in the film is needed in order to reliably evaluate its fracture toughness from the crack onset strain. Only if microcracks of sufficient size are present in the brittle layer, the steady-state energy release rate at the crack onset strain can be identified with layer toughness. Otherwise, the to…

Institutional Arrangements Matter for Both Efficiency and Distribution: Contributions and Challenges of the New Institutional Economics

2011

Are scholars in the New Institutional Economics tradition systematically disregarding distributive aspects when approaching policy issues as was the case during the 1970s and 1980s? Do economic and political agents usually care about distribution too? To provide an answer to these questions is the basic purpose of this chapter. The analysis carried out demonstrates that not all NIE oriented scholars disregard distributive issues. Some contributions are examined as examples, mainly in the so-called political economy branch of NIE. By means of a well-known graphical tool, the chapter also emphasizes that all of us clearly care about distribution, not just about efficiency, when participating …

Steady, periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes in toroidal pipes

2012

Incompressible flow in a toroidal pipe was investigated by direct numerical simulation. The curvature a/c (radius of the cross section / radius of the torus) was 0.3 or 0.1 and the bulk Reynolds number ranged between 3500 and 14 700. The study revealed a rich scenario of transition to turbulence. For the higher curvature a/c = 0.3, a supercritical transition from stationary to periodic flow (Hopf bifurcation) was observed at Re=4600. The periodic flow was characterized by a travelling wave which, in the whole periodic Re range, took the form of a varicose modulation of the twin Dean vortex rings, included 8 wavelengths along the axis of the torus, and exhibited instantaneous anti-symmetry a…
