Prone positioning and convalescent plasma therapy in a critically ill pregnant woman with COVID-19
2020
Abstract Prone positioning is feasible in pregnancy and may have contributed to the positive outcome in this case. Doctors should not be reluctant to move a patient to a prone position just because they are pregnant.
Materials for Respiratory Masks in the Context of COVID 19 Pandemic
2021
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of protective equipment worldwide, we aimed to study the literature for finding guidelines in the 3D manufacture of respiratory masks. We have searched for papers in CI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI, CPCI-S, CPCI-SSH, BKCI-S, BKCI-SSH, ESCI, CCR-EXPANDED, IC, using 3D printing materials sterilization and 3D printing materials disinfection keywords. From 80 results in databases, after refining, we selected six papers. We have also searched for manufacturers information regarding 3D printing materials sterilization or disinfection. We have found seven materials that are suitable for 3D printing and sterilization, with regards to multiple utili…
Analysis and review of the perioperative management of COVID-19 patients in thoracic surgery.
2021

Caveats in interpreting SARS‐CoV‐2 IgM + /IgG − antibody profile in asymptomatic health care workers
2020
Serological testing is increasingly recognized as a useful tool for management of the COVID‐19 pandemic.1 Cross‐sectional serosurveys provide information on exposure levels in a target population, which is helpful for designing public health strategies to blunt community transmission.2 This article is protected by copyright. Oleic Acid-Injection in Pigs As a Model for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
2018
The acute respiratory distress syndrome is a relevant intensive care disease with an incidence ranging between 2.2% and 19% of intensive care unit patients. Despite treatment advances over the last decades, ARDS patients still suffer mortality rates between 35 and 40%. There is still a need for further research to improve the outcome of patients suffering from ARDS. One problem is that no single animal model can mimic the complex pathomechanism of the acute respiratory distress syndrome, but several models exist to study different parts of it. Oleic acid injection (OAI)-induced lung injury is a well-established model for studying ventilation strategies, lung mechanics and ventilation/perfus…
Evidence for the utility of cfDNA plasma concentrations to predict disease severity in COVID-19
2021
AbstractCOVID-19 is a pandemic caused by the highly infective SARS-CoV-2. There is a need for biomarkers not only for overall prognosis but also for predicting the response to treatments and thus for improvements in the clinical management of patients with COVID-19. Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has emerged as a promising biomarker in the assessment of various disease conditions. The aim of this retrospective and observational pilot study was to examine the potential value of cfDNA plasma concentrations as a correlative biomarker in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Lithium-Heparin plasma samples were obtained from twenty-one COVID-19 patients during hospitalization in the University Medi…
The role of US examination in the management of acute abdomen.
2013
Acute abdomen is a medical emergency, in which there is sudden and severe pain in abdomen of recent onset with accompanying signs and symptoms that focus on an abdominal involvement. It can represent a wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from a benign and self-limiting disease to a surgical emergency. Nevertheless, only one quarter of patients who have previously been classified with an acute abdomen actually receive surgical treatment, so the clinical dilemma is if the patients need surgical treatment or not and, furthermore, in which cases the surgical option needs to be urgently adopted. Due to this reason a thorough and logical approach to the diagnosis of abdominal pain is necessary. …
