Möglicher Nutzen und Auswirkung einer Lipiodolmarkierung auf die Histologie beim hepatozellulären Karzinom
2005
Purpose: To assess the benefit and the effect of intraarterial lipiodol application on histological analysis of patients suspected of having HCC. To determine whether lipiodol marking leads to a better biopsy result and how lipiodol or a transarterial chemoembolization influences the histological diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Two groups of patients were examined. Group A included 14 patients highly suspected of having an HCC which had previously been unsuccessfully biopsied. A transarterial embolization with lipiodol was performed in these patients to mark intrahepatic tumors which could not otherwise be defined in unenhanced CT. A biopsy was then repeated. Group B included 22 patients …
Gamma-delta T-cell lymphomas.
2009
Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (TCLs) are uncommon neoplasms, accounting for about 12% of all lymphoid tumors worldwide. TCLs in which gammadelta T-cell receptors are expressed (gammadelta TCLs) are extremely aggressive and rare (<1% of lymphoid neoplasms). gammadelta TCLs originate from gammadelta T cells, a small subset of peripheral T cells with direct antigen recognition capability acting at the interface between innate and adaptive immunity. Two distinct gammadelta TCL entities are recognized: hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTL) and primary cutaneous gammadelta T-cell lymphoma (PCGD-TCL). HSTL is a well-characterized extranodal lymphoma that has a disguised onset, secondary to intrasinus…
Use of Nanomaterial-Based (Micro)Extraction Techniques for the Determination of Cosmetic-Related Compounds
2020
The high consumer demand for cosmetic products has caused the authorities and the industry to require rigorous analytical controls to assure their safety and efficacy. Thus, the determination of prohibited compounds that could be present at trace level due to unintended causes is increasingly important. Furthermore, some cosmetic ingredients can be percutaneously absorbed, further metabolized and eventually excreted or bioaccumulated. Either the parent compound and/or their metabolites can cause adverse health effects even at trace level. Moreover, due to the increasing use of cosmetics, some of their ingredients have reached the environment, where they are accumulated causing harmful effec…
Hyperlactacidaemia in isolated hyperthermic perfusion of tumour bearing rat limbs: a study of feasibility using a novel infusion solution.
1999
In a methodological study the applicability of hyperlactacidaemia in isolated hyperthermic perfusion of tumour-bearing rat limbs was investigated. In 50 Sprague Dawley rats, DS-sarcoma growth was initiated on the right food dorsum by subcutaneous injection of 0.5 ml ascites cells. In the anaesthetized animals isolated limb perfusion was performed under steady state conditions for 60min using a miniature equipment. Thereafter tumour volume was measured daily. (a) Investigation of feasability: 40 rats were allocated to four groups. Group I: Normothermic perfusion at 38 degrees C, n = 10; Group II: Hyperthermic perfusion at 40-41 degrees C, n = 10; Group III: Normothermic perfusion at 38 degree…
Plasma Insulin Levels and Hypoglycemia Affect Subcutaneous Interstitial Glucose Concentration
2018
[EN] Background: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) accuracy during hypoglycemia is suboptimal. This might be partly explained by insulin or hypoglycemia-induced changes in the plasma interstitial subcutaneous (SC) fluid glucose gradient. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of plasma insulin (PI) and hypoglycemia itself in the plasma and interstitial SC fluid glucose concentration in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Eleven subjects with type 1 diabetes (age 36.59.1 years, HbA(1c) 7.90.4% [62.8 +/- 2.02mmol/mol]; mean +/- standard deviation) were evaluated under hyperinsulinemic euglycemia and hypoglycemia. Each subject underwent two randomized crossover clam…

Current role of computed tomography-guided transthoracic needle biopsy of metastatic lung lesions.
2015
ABSTRACT Aim: As part of the Catania symposium on lung metastasectomy we reviewed our practice of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy of pulmonary metastatic lesions with particular emphasis on diagnostic accuracy and nature of complications lesions. Materials & methods: 25 patients with metastatic lesions of the lung have been evaluated between May 2010 and February 2014. Inclusion criteria consisted of patients with histologically confirmed, metastatic disease of the lung, those receiving a CT-guided needle biopsy, were at least 18 years of age; and with adequate hepatic, renal and hematological function. We recorded also the size of the sampled …
SIUMB recommendations for focal pancreatic lesions
2020
AbstractContrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is increasingly being performed in Italy and Europe, particularly in the field of hepato-gastroenterology. Initially, it was mainly carried out to characterize focal hepatic lesions, but, since then, numerous studies have demonstrated its efficacy in the differential diagnosis of focal pancreatic pathologies (D’Onofrio et al. in Expert Rev Med Devices 7(2):257–273, 2010; Vidili et al. in J Ultrasound 22(1):41–51, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to provide Italian Medical Doctors with recommendations and thereby practical guidelines on the management of these patients. The present paper reports the final conclusions reached by the SIUMB gu…
Secreted proteophosphoglycan of Leishmania mexicana amastigotes activates complement by triggering the mannan binding lectin pathway.
1997
Cutaneous lesions induced by infection of mice with the protozoan parasite, Leishmania mexicana, contain abundant amounts of a high molecular mass proteophosphoglycan (PPG), which is secreted by the amastigote stage residing in phagolysosomes of macrophages and can then be released into the tissue upon rupture of the infected cells. Amastigote PPG forms sausage-shaped but soluble particles and belongs to a novel class of serine-rich proteins that are extensively O-glycosylated by phosphooligosaccharides capped by mannooligosaccharides. The purified molecule is shown here to efficiently activate complement (C) and deplete hemolytic activity of normal serum and may prevent the opsonization of…
Impaired Th1 responses in mice deficient in Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 and challenged with physiological doses of Leishmania major.
2005
Protection against Leishmania major is dependent on IL-12 release from L. major-infected dendritic cells (DC) that induce IFN-gamma-producing Th1/Tc1 cells. IL-27, a novel member of the IL-12 family, is a heterodimer composed of p28 and IL-12p40-related Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3), and was shown to be produced by DC. In this study, we utilized EBI3-deficient mice to investigate the role of IL-27 in leishmaniasis using physiological low-dose infections that mimic natural transmissions. Lesions in EBI3(-/-) mice were significantly larger between weeks 3 and 10 post infection, reaching up to approximately threefold increased lesion volumes compared to wild types. In parallel, derm…
