Abstract Glycosyl-N-allyl carbamates, obtained by reaction of anomerically unprotected saccharides with allyl isocyanate, can be activated by an electrophile-induced cyclisation and reacted with glycosyl acceptors to form the corresponding oligosaccharides By this method the mucin core 2 trisaccharide2 has successfully been synthesized. Due to the mild glycosylation conditions even 1-O-acetyl protected glycosyl acceptors can be used. This was demonstrated in the synthesis of a 1,6-linked glucosyl trisaccharide whereby a reptitious glycosylation strategy could be applied. 1. Dedicated to the memory of Professor Akira Hasegawa.

Abstract Work examines the origin of bactericidal activity in mustard flour and explores the relative contribution from starter cultures, E. coli O157:H7 itself and other sources. Bacteria can degrade naturally occurring glucosinolates in mustard and form isothiocyanates with antimicrobial activity. In the present work, 24 starter cultures (mostly from commercial mixtures) were screened for their capacity to decompose the glucosinolate, sinalbin. The most active pair, Pediococcus pentosaceus UM 121P and Staphylococcus carnosus UM 123M, were used together for the production of dry fermented sausage contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 (~ 6.5 log CFU/g). The Golgi complex is a functionally heterogeneous subcellular structure that plays a key role in the synthesis, maturation, and sorting of newly synthesized glycoproteins. Fluorescent lectins have been used extensively to analyze surface glycoproteins by flow cytometry in whole cells and more recently in isolated subcellular organelles, such as mitochondria and chloroplasts. BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) and stone extraction is the treatment of choice for bile duct stones. Therefore, if ES and conventional stone extraction fail, further treatment is mandatory. Insertion of a biliary endoprosthesis is an effective option. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We treated 30 high-risk patients (17 women and 13 men, mean age 82 years) affected by difficult common bile duct stones. Abstract A new two-dimensional (2D) thiocyanato-bridged cobalt(II) network formulated as [LCo2(NCS)2]n (1), has been synthesized with the Schiff base ligand N,N′-bis(3-methoxysalicylidenimino)-1,3-diaminopropane (H2L) and thiocyanate anions. This novel layered compound has been completely characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and the structure has been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The structure of 1 consists of a doubly phenoxo-bridged dimer comprising two different cobalt(II) centers with different coordination geometries (octahedral and tetrahedral).
