Benzodiazepine receptor interactions may be involved in the neurotoxicity of various penicillin derivatives

The interaction of seven penicillin derivatives with specific [3H]flunitrazepam binding to benzodiazepine receptors was investigated. The affinities of the penicillins for benzodiazepine receptor seemed to depend on the lipophilia of the derivatives. The concentrations of the penicillins which inhibit specific [3H]flunitrazepam binding are consistent with penicillin levels found in the central nervous system of patients developing penicillin induced convulsions. The results suggest that penicillins inhibit GABAergic transmission not only at the GABA receptor, but also at the benzodiazepine receptor, which is thought to be part of a neuronal system facilitating GABAergic transmission. In most cells, cationic amino acids such as l-arginine, l-lysine, and l-ornithine are transported by cationic (CAT) and y(+)L (y(+)LAT) amino acid transporters. In human erythrocytes, the cysteine-modifying agent N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) has been shown to inhibit system y(+) (most likely CAT-1), but not system y(+)L (Devés, R., Angelo, S., and Chávez, P. (1993) J. Physiol. 468, 753-766). We thus wondered if sensitivity to NEM distinguishes generally all CAT and y(+)LAT isoforms. Abstract The metabolism of benzo[c]phenanthrene (B[c]Ph) and dibenzo[a, l]-pyrene (DB[a, l]P) with various CYP isoforms including rat 1A1, 1A2, 2B1, 2E1, human 1A1, 1A2, 1B1, 2A6, 3A4, 2E1 and fish 1A expressed in Chinese hamster V79 cells has been compared. Major differences in the catalytic activities and in the regioselectivity of the eleven CYP isoforms with B[c]Ph and DB[a, l]P as substrates have been observed. Abstract Vanadyl and nickel porphyrins were isolated from the oil shales of Tarfaya (Morocco) by extraction followed by column chromatography. The ratios and characteristics of these porphyrin complexes were essentially obtained on the basis of UV–visible and mass spectrometry data. Geochemical information could be drawn from these data. The nature and the contents of the metals coordinated and non-coordinated to porphyrin systems were also determined in this study.
Natural payload delivery of the doxorubicin anticancer drug from boron nitride oxide nanosheets

International audience; We studied the behavior of doxorubicin (DOX; an anticancer drug) molecules loaded on a boron nitride oxide nanosheet (BNO-NS) using the density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation methods. We found that DOX molecules in pi-pi or covalent interaction with BNO-NS preserve their optical properties in water. Moreover, the BNO-NS vector allowed stabilizing the DOX molecules on a cellular membrane contrary to isolated DOX that randomly moved in the solvent box without any interaction with the cell membrane. Bacterial resistance has become a worldwide concern, particularly after the emergence of resistant strains overproducing carbapenemases. Among these, the KPC-2 carbapenemase represents a significant clinical challenge, being characterized by a broad substrate spectrum that includes aminothiazoleoxime and cephalosporins such as cefotaxime. Identification of carbonaceous geosorbents for PAHs by organic petrography in river floodplain soils.

Organic petrographic analysis was applied to provide direct information on carbonaceous geosorbents for PAHs in river floodplain soils. The anthropogenic OM group (primarily coal and coal-derived particles) displayed large volume amounts for all the soil samples. Distinct PAH concentrations with similar PAH distribution patterns were determined in grain size and density fractions for each sample. Bioaccumulation of PAHs from creosote-contaminated sediment in a laboratory-exposed freshwater oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus

The oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus, was used for a bioaccumulation assay in the creosote-contaminated sediment of Lake Jämsänvesi in a 28-day experiment. The PAH concentrations of the whole body tissue of worms, sediments and water samples were determinated by GC-MS. Chemical analyses showed that benzo(k)fluoranthene, anthracene and fluorene were the main PAH compounds present in the tissue of oligochaetes, just as in the sediment. The biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) of the individual PAHs varied from 1.2 to 5.7. It is concluded that oligochaetes have a marked ability to accumulate and retain PAHs from creosote-contaminated sediment.

This study shows that ultrasonic assisted extraction is a good practise for removing impurities from sorbents used for matrix-solid phase dispersion (MSPD). A previous washing of the sorbent with an organic solvent or mixture of solvents eliminates part of the interferences, but this treatment is not enough for the quantification of PAHs at ng/g levels. Abstract The aerial parts of Artemisia fragrans collected in Armenia yielded a new cyclic monoterpene peroxide with the irregular santolinyl framework, together with several known germacranolides. Comparison with previously published chemical results suggests these may actually have been performed on a different, although closely related species.
