Simulating soil freeze/thaw cycles typical of winter alpine conditions: Implications for N and P availability

Abstract Seasonally snow-covered alpine soils may be subjected to freeze/thaw cycles, particularly during years having little snow and during the late winter and early spring periods. Freeze/thaw cycles can stimulate soil mineralization and could therefore be one factor regulating nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability and cycling. Design for recyclability and the avoidance of waste: the case of printed paper in Germany

This paper discusses the generation of process waste in printed paper recycling and some factors affecting the amount of de-inking waste. The effects on waste generation by paper grades, which are designed for improved recyclability, are pointed out. The amount of waste generated is considered as the improvement in recyclability. This corresponds to a reduction in the use of materials that cannot be recycled, which, in the case of paper means lowering their mineral content. Two scenarios of a dynamic model of the fluxes of printed paper in Germany between 1993 and 2000 are used to analyse the amount of waste generated. In mammalian skin, stem cell factor (SCF) regulates the proliferation and maturation of mast cells and melanocytes, which are thought to be the only cutaneous cells that express the Kit-tyrosine kinase receptor (Kit) and respond to epithelial and mesenchymal-derived SCF. We previously had noted, however, the presence of Kit+ cells in murine hair follicles, in an introepithelial tissue compartment devoid of melanocytes and mast cells. The effects of mental fatigue on sport-related performance

International audience; Mental fatigue is known to increase subjective feelings of fatigue and to decrease cognitive performance, but its impact on physical performance remains poorly understood. The aim of this chapter was to review the results of 29 studies published between 2009 and April 2018 and focusing on the impact of mental fatigue on sport-related performance. Taken all studies together, it appears that mental fatigue impairs endurance performance, motor skills performance and decision-making performance. Recycling plus: A new recipe for the formation of Alpine-Himalayan orogenic mantle lithosphere

Abstract The origin of the lithospheric mantle beneath accretionary orogens is enigmatic; although severe compression of the buoyant crust occurs, the mantle lithosphere is generally thought to be removed and returned to the convecting mantle. We suggest that during the accretion of oceanic arcs and small continental blocks in the Mediterranean region, and more generally throughout the whole Alpine–Himalayan orogenic belt, the mantle lithosphere is newly created and composed of intimately mixed peridotite and crustal material from the forearc region. Stimulated 7^Li echo NMR spectroscopy of slow ionic motions in a solid electrolyte

Abstract Lithium spin-alignment spectroscopy is presented as an NMR technique for studying slow translational motions in solid and solid-like ionic conductors. We employ phase cycling that allows to measure two-time translational correlation functions via the generation of a pure quadrupolar ordered state. Correlation functions of the crystalline electrolyte Li 3 Sc 2 (PO 4 ) 3 were recorded for times ranging from about 0.1 ms to more than 10 s, implying that translational diffusion coefficients smaller than 10 −20 m 2 /s become accessible.

Low-temperature polymorphism in tungsten trioxide powders and its dependence on mechanical treatments

The polymorphism of WO3 powder samples, resulting from mild mechanical treatments and from temperature changes between 30 K and room temperature, has been investigated by using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray di⁄raction. A transition from the monoclinic (I) c-phase to the triclinic d-phase after moderate mechanical treatments has been observed for untreated powder, just what happens when the same samples are rapidly cooled to low-temperature. Evidences of the low temperature monoclinic (II) polar e-phase have been found at room temperature in samples after a stronger milling treatment. Thermochromic Meltable Materials with Reverse Spin Transition Controlled by Chemical Design

International audience; We report a series of meltable FeII complexes, which, depending on the length of aliphatic chains, display abrupt forward low‐spin to high‐spin transition or unprecedented melting‐triggered reverse high‐spin to low‐spin transition on temperature rise. The reverse spin transition is perfectly reproducible on thermal cycling and the obtained materials are easily processable in the form of thin film owing to their soft‐matter nature. We found that the discovered approach represents a potentially generalizable new avenue to control both the location in temperature and the direction of the spin transition in meltable compounds.
