Motivating Physical Activity for Individuals with Intellectual Disability through Indoor Bike Cycling and Exergaming.
2022
People with intellectual disabilities have more sedentary lifestyles than the general population. Regular physical activity is of both medical and social importance, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and promoting functioning in everyday life. Exergames have been envisioned for promoting physical activity; however, most of them are not user-friendly for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In this paper, we report the design, development, and user acceptance of a mobile health solution connected to sensors to motivate physical activity. The system is mounted on an indoor stationary bicycle and an ergometer bike tailored for people with intellectual disabilities. The develop…

Economic benefits from food recovery at the retail stage: An application to Italian food chains
2013
The food supply chain is affected by losses of products near to their expiry date or damaged by improper transportation or production defects. Such products are usually poorly attractive for the consumer in the target market even if they maintain their nutritional properties. On the other hand undernourished people face every day the problem of fulfilling their nutritional needs usually relying on non-profit organizations. In this field the food recovery enabling economic benefits for donors is nowadays seen as a coherent way to manage food products unsalable in the target market for various causes and thus destined to be discarded and disposed to landfill thus representing only a cost. Des…
Slow pyrolysis of an LDPE/PP mixture: Kinetics and process performance
2021
Abstract High- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) are the most common polymers among plastic waste as they have multiple commercial applications. This study focused on thermal degradation characteristics and kinetic of a plastic mixture with a composition of 92.5 wt% LDPE and 7.5% PP. Thermal decomposition characteristics of the plastic mixture was analysed through thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The overall kinetic of the process was studied using the modified Coats−Redfern method and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) method. The apparent activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) obtained were 316.0 kJ/mol; 8.09E+21 min−1 and 311.5 kJ/mol; 4.35E+21 m…
On the projected increase of Sahel rainfall during the late rainy season
2016
Thirteen CMIP5 models are used to analyse changes in climate over the West African monsoon region between the near future (2031–2070 under the RCP4.5 emission scenario), and a control period (1960–1999 under the historical emission scenario), with a focus on the late rainy season. The monsoon circulation is projected to strengthen and to shift northward leading to more rainfall during the Sahelian season. The results show an increase of the Rainfall amounts in September–October and a delay in the monsoon withdrawal. The increased moisture that fuels the rainfall anomalies is associated with an increase in moisture flux convergence and with local moisture recycling. The moisture transport do…
Outlining the Limits of Friction Stir Consolidation as Used as an Aluminum Alloys Recycling Approach
2021
Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a solid-state process that recycles metal scraps economically and eco-friendly compared to the conventional melting method. The process parameters especially processing time and rotational speed, have a crucial role in achieving a sound disc during FSC. The current study answers the research question of how far these process parameters can be effective when the mass of chips to be recycled increases. In specific, an experimental setup was analyzed that was previously identified as challenging for recycling 20 g chips of aluminum alloy AA 2024-O. Rotational speed was set doubled, and processing time was increased up to 1.5 times of their initial values. T…
Estetyka "re-" w Weselu na podstawie "Wesela" z Teatru im. Jana Kochanowskiego w Opolu
2016
The subject of the article is, modern in last decades, a creative way of parasitising on someone else‘s texts – a reinterpretation of texts which were written some time ago. As an example of such a modern drama strategy, called a literary recycling, I chose ―The Wedding‖ on the basis of Wyspianski‘s ―The Wedding‖ presented in Jan Kochanowski Theatre in Opole. The staging is a reinterpretation of a well-known drama of Jan Wyspianski which leads us to many reflections. How far can a director walk away from an original text, traditions, conventions, a spectator‘s habits? What kind of compromises can be discussed to, on the one hand, keep the part of original content, and on the other hand, pre…
Determinants of the distribution of nitrogen-cycling microbial communities at the landscape-scale
2010
Little information is available regarding the landscape-scale distribution of microbial communities and its environmental determinants. However, a landscape perspective is needed to understand the relative importance of local and regional factors and land management for the microbial communities. In this manuscript, we investigated the distribution of functional microbial communities involved in N-cycling and of the total bacterial and crenarchaeal communities over 107 sites using a grid with a 16 km lag distance within Burgundy, a 31 500 km2 region in France. After quantifying the abundances of the total bacterial, crenarchaeal, nitrate-reducing, denitrifying and ammonia-oxidizing communit…
Caractérisation des communautés microbiennes dans les technosols construits pour la restauration des friches industrielles
2012
Increasing soil degradation and its consequences on overall ecosystem services urge for restoration strategies. Construction of Technosols through assemblage of treated soil and industrial wastes is an innovative technology for the restoration of polluted land and re-use of industrial by-products. Recent studies have evidenced that Technosols could support ecosystemic services such as primary production but the knowledge about other soil functions, such as biogeochemical cycling, is limited. Due to the significant contribution of microbial communities to soil functioning, this PhD work was carried out to study the effect of the type of Technosol on microbial communities with a focus on func…
Loss in microbial diversity affects nitrogen cycling in soil
2013
International audience; Microbial communities have a central role in ecosystem processes by driving the Earth's biogeochemical cycles. However, the importance of microbial diversity for ecosystem functioning is still debated. Here, we experimentally manipulated the soil microbial community using a dilution approach to analyze the functional consequences of diversity loss. A trait-centered approach was embraced using the denitrifiers as model guild due to their role in nitrogen cycling, a major ecosystem service. How various diversity metrics related to richness, eveness and phylogenetic diversity of the soil denitrifier community were affected by the removal experiment was assessed by 454 s…
