Control of electron-cyclotron instability driven by strong ECRH in open magnetic trap

We discuss the laboratory experiment on a controlled transition from the generation of periodic bursts of electromagnetic radiation into the continuous-wave regime of a cyclotron maser formed in a magnetically confined non-equilibrium plasma (Shalashov A. G. et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. , 114 (2018) 205001). The kinetic cyclotron instability of the extraordinary wave of a weakly inhomogeneous magnetized plasma is driven by the anisotropic electron population resulting from electron cyclotron plasma heating in a MHD-stable minimum-B open magnetic trap. In the present communication we focus on a theoretical model that explains the existing data and motivates further experiments.

Half-Life of the Doubly Magicr-Process NucleusN78i

Nuclei with magic numbers serve as important benchmarks in nuclear theory. In addition, neutron-rich nuclei play an important role in the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process (r process). 78Ni is the only doubly magic nucleus that is also an important waiting point in the r process, and serves as a major bottleneck in the synthesis of heavier elements. The half-life of 78Ni has been experimentally deduced for the first time at the Coupled Cyclotron Facility of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University, and was found to be 110(+100)(-60) ms. Plasma instability in the afterglow of electron cyclotron resonance discharge sustained in a mirror trap

The work presented in this article is devoted to time-resolved diagnostics of non-linear effects observed during the afterglow plasma decay of a 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source operated in pulsed mode. Plasma instabilities that cause perturbations of the extracted ion current during the decay were observed and studied. It is shown that these perturbations are associated with precipitation of high energy electrons along the magnetic field lines and strong bursts of bremsstrahlung emission. A status report of the multipurpose superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source

Intense heavy ion beam production with electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources is a common requirement for many of the accelerators under construction in Europe and elsewhere. An average increase of about one order of magnitude per decade in the performance of ECR ion sources was obtained up to now since the time of pioneering experiment of R. Geller at CEA, Grenoble, and this trend is not deemed to get the saturation at least in the next decade, according to the increased availability of powerful magnets and microwave generators. Energy-loss straggling of 2-10 MeV/u Kr ions in gases

Measurements have been performed on a time-of-flight setup at the Jyväskylä K130 cyclotron, aiming at energy-loss straggling of heavy ions in gases. Theoretical predictions based on recently developed theory as well as an empirical interpolation formula predict that straggling can be more than ten times higher than Bohr straggling in the MeV/u regime. Our measurements with up to 9.3 MeV/u Kr ions on He, N2, Ne and Kr targets confirm this feature. Our calculations show the relative contributions of linear straggling, bunching including packing, and charge exchange. New Neutron-Rich Nuclei and Isomers Produced in Symmetric Fisson

The novel method for rapid on-line mass separation, the IGISOL, is described. The method has been shown applicable to mass separation of short-lived proton-induced fission products without any chemical dependence on radionuclide. Recent results on isomeric states with half-lives of the order of milliseconds produced directly in proton-induced fission of 238U and separated with the IGISOL are presented. The future plans for connection of the new K-130 cyclotron of the University of Jyvaskyla with the IGISOL are reviewed.

Determination of the helium-4 mass in a Penning trap

We have measured the cyclotron frequencies of He+, H+ 2 and D+ 2 ions in a room temperature Penning trap. The resonances were detected destructively by a time-of-flight technique. The statistical uncertainty of the resonance frequencies was generally below 1 ppb. A detailed account of measures to minimize systematic frequency shift is presented. Using the accepted values for the proton and deuteron mass we obtain a value for the 4He mass: M(4 He) = 4.0026032489(22) (0.5 ppb). It is in agreement with the accepted value.

GRO J1744-28: an intermediate B-field pulsar in a low mass X-ray binary

The bursting pulsar, GRO J1744-28, went again in outburst after $\sim$18 years of quiescence in mid-January 2014. We studied the broad-band, persistent, X-ray spectrum using X-ray data from a XMM-Newton observation, performed almost at the peak of the outburst, and from a close INTEGRAL observation, performed 3 days later, thus covering the 1.3-70.0 keV band. The spectrum shows a complex continuum shape that cannot be modelled with standard high-mass X-ray pulsar models, nor by two-components models. Collinear laser spectroscopy of high-energy Li-like11B beam

As part of the RIKEN RIBF (RI beam factory) program, high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy for highly-charged radioactive isotope beams, is proposed in order to make a systematic study of the mean-square nuclear charge radii and moments of short lived radioactive isotopes far from the line of stability. To examine the feasibility of the experiment, we are now performing a test experiment using a laser beam and Li-like ion beams from RIKEN ring cyclotron. The D1 resonance line of a 11B2+ beam was clearly observed for the first time.

β-decay measurements ofA≃ 70 − 110 r-process nuclei at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory

The present paper reports on several r-process motivated β-decay experiments undertaken at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. β-decay half-lives and β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities were measured for nuclei around the r-process A = 70–80 and A = 90 – 110 mass regions. The data are discussed on the basis of quasi-random phase approximation calculations. The emphasis is made on the impact of these data upon calculations of r-process abundances.
