The impact of space development structure on the level of ecological footprint - Shift share analysis for European Union countries
2022
The impact of the space development structure on the level of the ecological footprint is an important element of the sustainable development policy, determining not only its directions, but also indicating the manner of respecting en- vironmental principles. The aim of the research is to assess the impact of the spatial development structure on the eco- logical footprint level. The considerations are based on the assumption that the spatial development structure is a determinant of the ecological footprint level. The study used the shift share analysis method. Selected European coun- tries were the subject of the research. The research period covered the years 2009–2019. The spatial differ…
Interešu konflikts: Kipras un Piedņestras konfliktu salīdzinošā analīze.
2016
Cytotaxonomical investigation on Allium paniculatum ssp. exaltatum (Alliaceae) from Cyprus.
2004
Arare Allium endemic to Cyprus island, known as A. paniculatum subsp. exaltatum, is here examined. Relevant features in its morphology, caryology and leaf anatomy emphasize the marked taxonomic isolation of this taxon and allow it to be treated as a distinct species, proposed as Allium exaltatum. It is an exaploid plant (2n=48), probably arisen out of allopolyploidy and morphologically related only to some Middle East taxa.
Children's exploration of the concepts of home and belonging: Capturing views from five European countries.
2021
Understanding one's sense of belonging is a central part of identity formation and self-awareness; feeling safe somewhere, with specific people is identified as a basic human need. This paper explores the ideas of children from three age groups in five different European as they discussed the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’. Findings showed that the children's ideas could be organised into six interrelated aspects: Spatiality, Materiality, Multiplicity, Social Relations, Affect, and Dislocation. Whilst there were differences in the ways that the children conceptualised home across the classes, even the youngest children were able to describe their ideas using metaphors and abstract conce…
Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the essential oil of Salvia lanigera from Cyprus
2010
The essential oil of aerial parts of Salvia lanigera Poir. (Lamiaceae) growing wild in Cyprus was obtained by hydrodistillation and was analysed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 67 compounds, representing 93.6% of the oil, were identified, and the major components were showed to be thymol (12.1%), hexadecanoic acid (6.0%), carvacrol and α-thujone (5.7%). The essential oil was assayed for its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Antimicrobial activity of the oil, evaluated using the broth dilution method, resulted higher against Gram-positive bacteria than the other referenced strains tested. Antioxidant activity of the oil was evaluated by using DPPH and FRAP methods together with three ant…
Risk profiles for re-profiling sovereign debt
2015
Purpose – This paper aims to use a risk management approach for re-profiling of sovereign debt. It develops profiles that trade off expected cost of financing alternative debt structures against their risk. The risk profiles are particularly informative for countries facing sovereign debt crisis, as they allow us to identify, with high probability, debt unsustainability. Risk profiles for two eurozone countries with excessive debt, Cyprus and Italy, were developed. In addition, risk profiles were developed for a proposal to impose debt sanctions in the Ukrainian crisis and it was shown that the financial impact could be substantial. Design/methodology/approach – Using scenario analysis, a r…

The orophilous dwarf-shrub vegetation of Mt. Troodos (Cyprus).
2005
A phytosociological survey on the orophilous dwarf-shrub vegetation of Mt. Troodos (Cyprus) is presented. Four associations are described, the first three being linked to the upper supramediterranean bioclimatic belt: Nepeto troodi-Hypericetum stenobotryos, dwelling the summit plateaux on ultramaphic sediments, Salvietum willeanae, substituting the previous one in hollow sites, where the snow-cover lasts longer, Onosmo troodi-Astragaletum chionistrae, colonizing eroded soils on steep, windy slopes, Alysso cyprici-Genistetum crudelis replacing the Nepeto troodi-Hypericetum stenobotryos at lower altitudes, within the lower supramediterranean belt. Due to the noteworthy floristic autonomy of t…
The orophilous dwarf shrub vegetation of Mt Troodos (Cyprus)
2005
The results of a phytosociological survey on the orophilous vegetation dominated by dwarf, often thorny, scrubs occurring on the top of Mt. Troodos (Cyprus) are presented. The vegetation at issue ranges between 1500 and 1950 m, within the meso- and supramediterranean bioclimatic belts, where it dwells ultramaphic and serpentinitic substrata on windy slopes and summit plateaux. These plant communities face intense summer drought and cold winters, with av. two months of snow cover. The ombrotype of the dwelled sites ranges from subhumid to lower humid, with an av. rainfall about 1000 mm/year. Due to the human activity, secondary habitats became also available, mainly represented by sites with…
