Microwave and optical data fusion for global mapping of soil moisture at high resolution

After more than 8 years in orbit the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite is still in good health and several algorithms for improving its spatial resolution have been proposed and validated in a variety of catchments. However, none of them has yet been applied at the global scale. In this article we present: i) a review of the latest SMOS-BEC downscaling algorithm, which allows for its global application using an adaptive moving window and ii) a thorough validation of the resulting maps over two in-situ networks: REMEDHUS in Spain and OzNet in Australia. [EN] In Mediterranean ecosystems, special attention needs to be paid to forest¿water relationships due to water scarcity. In this context, Adaptive Forest Management (AFM) has the objective to establish how forest resources have to be managed with regards to the efficient use of water, which needs maintaining healthy soil properties even after disturbance. Application of minidisk infiltrometer to estimate water repellency in Mediterranean pine forest soils

Assessment of soil water repellency (SWR) was conducted in the decomposed organic floor layer (duff) and in the mineral soil layer of two Mediterranean pine forests, one in Italy and the other in Spain, by the widely-used water drop penetration time (WDPT) test and alternative indices derived from infiltration experiments carried out by the minidisk infiltrometer (MDI). Using LEACHM model for evaluation and optimization of the use low quality water in citrus

Para evaluar el riesgo de salinizacion en suelos con cultivo de cítricos se utilizó el modelo LEACHM que fue calibrado y validado en 7 perfiles de la cuenca sedimentaria de Torreblanca (Castellón, España). Se aplicó un análisis de escenarios mediante la combinación de: cultivos, clima, suelos, tipo de riego y calidad de las aguas y se analizaron estrategias alternativas mediante la utilización de mezclas de aguas. Los índices estadísticos mostraron un buen ajuste del modelo en la zona radicular entre 200-600 mm y una sobreestimación de la humedad en los horizontes inferiores.
