Second-best taxation for a polluting monopoly with abatement investment

This paper characterizes the optimal tax rule to regulate a polluting monopoly when the firm has the possibility of investing in an abatement technology and the environmental damages are caused by a stock pollutant. The optimal policy is given by the stagewise feedback Stackelberg equilibrium of a dynamic policy game between a regulator and a monopolist. The regulator playing as the leader chooses an emission tax to maximize net social welfare, and the monopolist acting as the follower selects the output and the investment in abatement technology to maximize profits. An extended shakedown theory for elastic-plastic-damage material models

Internal variable elastic-plastic-damage, or elastic-damage, material models endowed with free energy are considered. Referring to a structure of such a material subjected to loads varying inside a given domain, the classical notion of (elastic) shakedown is widened to signify that the structure eventually responds to the loads in an elastic manner after certain (finite) amounts of plastic strain and/or damage have been produced. An integrated structural health monitoring system based on electromechanical impedance and guided ultrasonic waves

We propose a structural health monitoring (SHM) paradigm based on the simultaneous use of ultrasounds and electromechanical impedance (EMI) to monitor waveguides. Methods based on the propagation of guided ultrasonic waves (GUWs) are increasingly used in all those SHM applications that benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges, and high sensitivity to small flaws. Detection of primary DNA damage in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii by means of modified microgel electrophoresis.

The assessment of genotoxic potential in surface water requires test methods, among which are those that detect initial DNA damage in organisms of aquatic biocenosis. The microgel electrophoresis (MGE) "comet assay" was applied to a ubiquitous unicellular green alga (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) to detect DNA damage caused by genotoxins. For this, the test protocol described by Singh NP et al. [Exp Cell Res 175: 184-191, 1988] was modified. Abstract Genotoxic effects of benzo[ a ]pyrene (BP) and its reactive metabolites (±)- anti -benzo[ a ]pyrene-7,8-diol 9,10-oxide ((±)- anti -BPDE) were comparatively investigated in vitro with the permanent human fibroblast cell line MRC5CV1. Induced DNA adducts were measured by 32 P-postlabeling, DNA strand breakage was determined by the comet assay and the HPRT gene mutation test was used to detect cytotoxicity and mutagenicity. Treatment of MRC5CV1 cells with S9 mix-activated BP or with (±)- anti -BPDE resulted in a concentration-dependent increase in DNA adducts and strand breaks.
