The Nexus between Sovereign CDS and Stock Market Volatility: New Evidence
2021
This paper extends the studies published to date by performing an analysis of the causal relationships between sovereign CDS spreads and the estimated conditional volatility of stock indices. This estimation is performed using a vector autoregressive model (VAR) and dynamically applying the Granger causality test. The conditional volatility of the stock market has been obtained through various univariate GARCH models. This methodology allows us to study the information transmissions, both unidirectional and bidirectional, that occur between CDS spreads and stock volatility between 2004 and 2020. We conclude that CDS spread returns cause (in the Granger sense) conditional stock volatility, m…
New constraints on granulite facies metamorphism and melt production in the Lewisian Complex, northwest Scotland
2018
The research carried out for this study was part of YF's Master Thesis at the Institute of Geoscience, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, which provided the funding for fieldwork and laboratory analyses. TJ acknowledges support from Open Fund GPMR210704 from the State Key Lab for Geological Processes and Mineral Resources, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan. In this study we investigate the metamorphic history of the Assynt and Gruinard blocks of the Archaean Lewisian Complex, northwest Scotland, which are considered by some to represent discrete crustal terranes. For samples of mafic and intermediate rocks, phase diagrams were constructed in the Na2O-CaO‐K2O‐FeO‐MgO‐Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-T…

First report of grapevine fleck virus in vineyards of Bosnia and Herzegovina
2020
Grapevine is one of the most important fruit crops in Bosnia and Herzegovina with an annual production of around 40 thousand tons in 2018 (FAOSTAT, http://www.fao.org/ faostat/en/#data/QC). Production of grapevine in the country is mainly concentrated in vineyards in the Lištica and Mostar regions of Herzegovina with the two predominant autochthonous cultivars ‘Žilavka’ and ‘Blatina’. Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV) from the genus Maculavirus in the family Tymoviridae is a phloem limited virus with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome (Dreher et al. 2012). GFkV is associated with fleck disease of Vitis spp. In order to investigate the current status of GFkV in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 80…
Evaluation of the contribution of the GLONASS constellation in GNSS geodetic positioning with NRTKThe strengthen…

Glutathione peroxidase-1 in health and disease: from molecular mechanisms to therapeutic opportunities.
2011
Reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, are generated in all cells by mitochondrial and enzymatic sources. Left unchecked, these reactive species can cause oxidative damage to DNA, proteins, and membrane lipids. Glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPx-1) is an intracellular antioxidant enzyme that enzymatically reduces hydrogen peroxide to water to limit its harmful effects. Certain reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide, are also essential for growth factor-mediated signal transduction, mitochondrial function, and maintenance of normal thiol redox-balance. Thus, by limiting hydrogen peroxide accumulation, GPx-1 also modulates these processes. This review explor…

Glutathione peroxidase 1 activity dictates the sensitivity of glioblastoma cells to oxidative stress.
2012
The high intratumoral and intertumoral heterogeneity of glioblastoma (GBM) leads to resistance to different therapies, and hence, selecting an effective therapy is very challenging. We hypothesized that the antioxidant enzyme status is a significant feature of GBM heterogeneity. The most important reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) detoxification mechanisms include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Expression and activity of these enzymes and the cellular response to induced oxidative stress were systematically analyzed and compared between GBM cells and nontransformed glial cells of both human and murine origin. Regardless of cell type or speci…
The discovery, distribution, and diversity of DNA viruses associated with Drosophila melanogaster in Europe
2021
Drosophila melanogaster is an important model for antiviral immunity in arthropods, but very few DNA viruses have been described from the family Drosophilidae. This deficiency limits our opportunity to use natural host-pathogen combinations in experimental studies, and may bias our understanding of the Drosophila virome. Here, we report fourteen DNA viruses detected in a metagenomic analysis of 6668 pool-sequenced Drosophila, sampled from forty-seven European locations between 2014 and 2016. These include three new nudiviruses, a new and divergent entomopoxvirus, a virus related to Leptopilina boulardi filamentous virus, and a virus related to Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy viru…
