Rasburicase-induced Methemoglobinemia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

2020

Rasburicase is a recombinant urate oxidase enzyme indicated for tumor lysis syndrome, a potential life-threatening oncologic emergency that occurs most commonly during initial chemotherapy for hematological malignancies. As a result of the defects in the physiological antioxidant pathway, erythrocytes of patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency are not protected against the oxidizing stress exerted by hydrogen peroxide generated with the administration of rasburicase. The authors report a 14-year-old patient, diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who developed methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia with low oxygen saturation after starting steroids, hyperhydr…

Herbicidal activity of Mediterranean essential oils and their effects on soil bioindicators.

2020

Exact mechanical models of fractional hereditary materials

2012

Fractional Viscoelasticity is referred to materials, whose constitutive law involves fractional derivatives of order β R such that 0 β 1. In this paper, two mechanical models with stress-strain relation exactly restituting fractional operators, respectively, in ranges 0 β 1 / 2 and 1 / 2 β 1 are presented. It is shown that, in the former case, the mechanical model is described by an ideal indefinite massless viscous fluid resting on a bed of independent springs (Winkler model), while, in the latter case it is a shear-type indefinite cantilever resting on a bed of independent viscous dashpots. The law of variation of all mechanical characteristics is of power-law type, strictly related to th…

Ancient Haplotypes at the 15q24.2 Microdeletion Region Are Linked to Brain Expression of MAN2C1 and Children's Intelligence

2016

The chromosome bands 15q24.1-15q24.3 contain a complex region with numerous segmental duplications that predispose to regional microduplications and microdeletions, both of which have been linked to intellectual disability, speech delay and autistic features. The region may also harbour common inversion polymorphisms whose functional and phenotypic manifestations are unknown. Using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data, we detected four large contiguous haplotype-genotypes at 15q24 with Mendelian inheritance in 2,562 trios, African origin, high population stratification and reduced recombination rates. Although the haplotype-genotypes have been most likely generated by decreased or abse…

Klasikas iestudējumi Oļģerta Krodera režijā: teksts un tā interpretācija

2017

Promocijas darbā pētīta teksta nozīme iestudējuma koncepcijas īstenošanā, balstoties uz režisora Oļģerta Krodera iestudētajiem literatūras klasikas darbiem. O. Krodera radošā darbība analizēta hronoloģiski secīgos četros periodos, kurus lielā mērānosaka katrā periodā iestudētā V. Šekspīra traģēdija „Hamlets”. Kopumā analizēti 12 iestudējumi, fiksējot laikmeta refleksijas katra iestudējuma vēstījumā un pieņemot „Hamletu” kā atskaites punktu. Teksts pētījumā analizēts no hermeneitikas pozīcijām kā lingvistiski izteikts vēstī jums. Vienlaikus ņemts vērā jēdziena „teksts” kulturoloģiskais aspekts, kas iestudējuma vēstījuma atklāsmē par vienlīdz svarīgiem atzīst visus estētikas objektus. Pētījum…

Inhibition of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis by a synthetic glycine-alanine repeat peptide that mimics an inhibitory viral sequence.

2002

AbstractThe glycine–alanine repeat (GAr) of the Epstein–Barr virus nuclear antigen-1 is a cis-acting transferable element that inhibits ubiquitin/proteasome-dependent proteolysis in vitro and in vivo. We have here examined the effect of a synthetic 20-mer GAr oligopeptide on the degradation of iodinated or biotin labeled lysozyme in a rabbit reticulocyte lysates in vitro assay. Micromolar concentrations of the GA-20 peptide inhibited the hydrolysis of lysozyme without significant effect on ubiquitination. Addition of the peptide did not inhibit the hydrolysis of fluorogenic substrate by purified proteasomes and did not affect the ubiquitination of lysozyme. An excess of the peptide failed t…

Taxonomic review of the fungal-inhabiting plant bug genera Bothriomiris and Dashymenia (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae: Bothriomirini), w…

2016

The two closely related and frequently confused genera of the fungal-inhabiting plant bug subfamily Cylapinae, Bothriomiris Kirkaldy, 1902 and Dashymenia Poppius, 1910 are redefined and reviewed. Two new species of Dashymenia, D. artchawakomi, new species and D. gorczycai, new species, are described from Thailand. Bothriomiris capillosus Yasunaga, 2000 and B. yakushima Yasunaga & Miyamoto, 2012 are transferred to the genus Dashymenia Poppius, and a revised key to the two genera is provided. Color habitus images of the adults are given for Dashymenia artchawakomi, D. capillosa, and D. gorczycai. The male genitalic structures of the following species are illustrated: Bothriomiris ernsti Yasun…

Empirical Likelihood-Based ANOVA for Trimmed Means

2016

In this paper, we introduce an alternative to Yuen’s test for the comparison of several population trimmed means. This nonparametric ANOVA type test is based on the empirical likelihood (EL) approach and extends the results for one population trimmed mean from Qin and Tsao (2002). The results of our simulation study indicate that for skewed distributions, with and without variance heterogeneity, Yuen’s test performs better than the new EL ANOVA test for trimmed means with respect to control over the probability of a type I error. This finding is in contrast with our simulation results for the comparison of means, where the EL ANOVA test for means performs better than Welch’s heteroscedastic…

GARCH models with changes in variance: An approximation to risk measurements

2003

This study aims to model volatility as an approximation to an optimum measurement of stock market risk because of the importance of this concept for, among other things, the proper management of portfolios. Following the proposal of Lamoureux and Lastrapes (1990), the authors consider that the high degree of persistence detected in GARCH models arises from a poor specification of the equation of the variance due to not considering the possible deterministic changes in the unconditional variance of the financial series. To determine the point in time as well as the duration of these changes, the proposal made by Inclan and Tiao (1994) is used. As an empirical application, whether or not the …

Biophysical parameter retrieval with warped Gaussian processes

2015

This paper focuses on biophysical parameter retrieval based on Gaussian Processes (GPs). Very often an arbitrary transformation is applied to the observed variable (e.g. chlorophyll content) to better pose the problem. This standard practice essentially tries to linearize/uniformize the distribution by applying non-linear link functions like the logarithmic, the exponential or the logistic functions. In this paper, we propose to use a GP model that automatically learns the optimal transformation directly from the data. The so-called warped GP regression (WGPR) presented in [1] models output observations as a parametric nonlinear transformation of a GP. The parameters of such prior model are…
