Didascalica antierotica: insaniae exempla, mellita cognomina. A proposito di Lucrezio, De rerum natura 4, 1144-1169
2009
In the total indictment against love as a ruinous passion, Lucretius finds space in 4, 1144-1169 to ironically underline euphemisms used by the lover in order to attenuate women’s faults, by deceiving themselves. The wide range of borrowings from the palliata and the Hellenistic epigram, besides the parodic reuse of tipically neoteric nouns and adjectives, concurs to demystify lovers’ illusions, in the context of a tight didascalic lusus.
Gp91phox-containing NAD(P)H oxidase increases superoxide formation by doxorubicin and NADPH
2006
Doxorubicin is a highly effective antineoplastic drug associated with a dose-dependent cardiotoxicity that may result in irreversible cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Gene variants of the superoxide-generating enzyme NAD(P)H oxidase have recently been associated with this phenotype. We investigated the mechanism of this association using lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence, spectrophotometry, electrochemical sensor, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Superoxide production was measured in female wild-type and NAD(P)H oxidase-deficient (gp91phox knockout) mice. The magnitude of the increase in superoxide production on the addition of doxorubicin was much higher in hearts of w…
Can PBDEs affect the pathophysiologic complex of epithelium in lung diseases?
2020
Brominated flame-retardant (BFRs) exposure promotes multiple adverse health outcomes involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissues damage. We investigated BFR effects, known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (47, 99 and 209) in an air-liquid-interface (ALI) airway tissue derived from A549 cell line, and compared with ALI culture of primary human bronchial epithelial cells (pHBEC). The cells, exposed to PBDEs (47, 99 and 209) (0.01-1 mu M) for 24 h, were studied for IL-8, Muc5AC and Muc5B (mRNAs and proteins) production, as well as NOX-4 (mRNA) expression. Furthermore, we evaluated tight junction (TJ) integrity by Trans-Epithelial Electrical Resistance (TEER) measurements, …
Evaluation of soluble CD 14 and neopterin as serum parameters of the inflammatory activity of pulmonary sarcoidosis.
1992
CD14 represents the most specific marker for monocytes/macrophages. It has been demonstrated in vitro that monocytes/macrophages lose this antigen upon activation. Results of studies investigating the expression of membrane-bound CD14 on the surface of monocytes/macrophages in sarcoidosis patients are controversial. To investigate whether the soluble form of CD14 reflects monocyte/macrophage activation in sarcoidosis, serum levels of soluble CD14 were determined concurrently with other serum markers of monocyte/macrophage activation (neopterin, angiotensin-converting enzyme) in 50 consecutive patients with bioptically confirmed sarcoidosis. The patients were allocated to three groups accord…
DPP-4 is overexpressed in lung tissue from idiopathic pulmonary patients and activates lung fibroblasts
2020
Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and irreversible form of fibrotic interstitial lung disease, characterized by uncontrolled fibroblast invasion. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4)/ glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) system is involved in multiple effects, including cardiac, liver or kidney fibrosis. However, its implication in IPF has not been described. Objective: To analyse the implication of DPP4/GLP1 system in IPF. Methods: Protein expression of DPP4, GLP-1 and GLP-1 receptor was analyzed in lung tissues from 7 IPF patients. TGFβ1-induced fibroblast to myofibroblast transition (FMT), epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and mesothelial to mesenchymal trans…

Phenoloxidases in ascidian hemocytes: characterization of the pro-phenoloxidase activating system.
2003
The phenoloxidase (PO) activity of the hemocytes lysate supernatant from three ascidians species, assayed by means of 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride, have been compared. PO-containing hemocytes were identified by a cytochemical reaction and the enzymatic activity measured by a spectrophotometric assay of lysate supernatant from hemocyte populations separated on a discontinuous Percoll density gradient. In Styela plicata, the enzyme appeared to be contained in morula cells only. In Ciona intestinalis, PO activity was shown in univacuolar refractile granulocyte and granular hemocyte. In Phallusia mammillata both compartment cell and granular hemocytes were positive. Enzy…
Robustas statistiskās metodes laikrindu analīzē
2019
Bakalaura darbā apskatītas robustas statistiskās metodes, ko piemēro laikrindām, ja datos ir izlēcēji. Aprakstīta robustā statistika, kāpēc tā ir nepieciešama, lūzuma punkts, novērtējumu definēšana. Apskatīti izlēcēju veidi, to ietekmes piemēri un varbūtību modeļi. Salīdzināti robustie un klasiskie novērtējumi dažādiem ARMA modeļiem. Robusta metode piemērota reālu datu piemēram.
Modulation of longevity-associated genes by estrogens or phytoestrogens.
2008
Abstract Females live longer than males. We have shown that the higher levels of estrogens in females protect them against aging, by up-regulating the expression of antioxidant, longevity-related genes, such as that of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD). Both estradiol and genistein (the most abundant phytoestrogen in soybeans) share chemical properties which confer antioxidant features to these compounds. However, the low concentration of estrogens and phytoestrogens make it unlikely that they exhibit significant antioxidant capacity in the organism. Physiological concentrations of estrogens and nutritionally relevant concentrations of geni…
