Leucine Aminopeptidase Activity in Mast Cells
1959
DURING investigations of the behaviour of leucine aminopeptidase activity of blood-serum in patients with dermatoses and tumours1–3, in a case of diffuse skin mastocytosis of a new-born, we detected heightened activity of leucine aminopeptidase. After mechanical friction of the affected skin, greater activity of leucine aminopeptidase occurred. From this we supposed a release of leucine aminopeptidase from the mast cell infiltrates of the skin. As is well known, in urticaria pigmentosa mechanical irritation of the skin lesions give rise to a degranulation of mast cells4,5 with liberation of histamine and serotonin. Indeed, there is no doubt that mast cells contain the enzyme leucine aminope…
Inhibitor of the Cytochrome Oxidase of Unfertilized Sea Urchin Eggs
1960
IN a previous communication1 the presence of an inhibitor of cytochrome oxidase in the unfertilized sea urchin egg was described. It was shown that its activity decreases considerably following fertilization, that it is a low-molecular compound, that it is heat- and alkali-labile and that its action is of a competitive type.
An analytical model to evaluate the radiated power spectrum of a multipactor discharge in a parallel-plate region
2008
This paper is aimed at studying the electromagnetic radiation pattern of a multipactor discharge occurring in a parallel-plate waveguide. The proposed method is based on the Fourier expansion of the multipactor current in terms of time-harmonic currents radiating in the parallel-plate region. Classical radiation theory combined with the frequency domain Green's function of the problem allows the calculation of both the electric and the magnetic radiated fields. A novel analytical formula for the total radiated power of each multipactor harmonic has been derived. This formula is suitable for predicting multipactor with the third-harmonic technique. The proposed formulation has been successfu…

The crystal structure of a 250-kDa heterotetrameric particle explains inhibition of sheddase meprin β by endogenous fetuin-B
2021
Meprin β (Mβ) is a multidomain type-I membrane metallopeptidase that sheds membrane-anchored substrates, releasing their soluble forms. Fetuin-B (FB) is its only known endogenous protein inhibitor. Herein, we analyzed the interaction between the ectodomain of Mβ (MβΔC) and FB, which stabilizes the enzyme and inhibits it with subnanomolar affinity. The MβΔC:FB crystal structure reveals a ∼250-kDa, ∼160-Å polyglycosylated heterotetrameric particle with a remarkable glycan structure. Two FB moieties insert like wedges through a “CPDCP trunk” and two hairpins into the respective peptidase catalytic domains, blocking the catalytic zinc ions through an “aspartate switch” mechanism. Uniquely, the …
The Multiscale Stochastic Model of Fractional Hereditary Materials (FHM)
2013
Abstract In a recent paper the authors proposed a mechanical model corresponding, exactly, to fractional hereditary materials (FHM). Fractional derivation index 13 E [0,1/2] corresponds to a mechanical model composed by a column of massless newtonian fluid resting on a bed of independent linear springs. Fractional derivation index 13 E [1/2, 1], corresponds, instead, to a mechanical model constituted by massless, shear-type elastic column resting on a bed of linear independent dashpots. The real-order of derivation is related to the exponent of the power-law decay of mechanical characteristics. In this paper the authors aim to introduce a multiscale fractance description of FHM in presence …
Temporal variability analysis reveals biases in electronic health records due to hospital process reengineering interventions over seven years
2019
[EN] Objective To evaluate the effects of Process-Reengineering interventions on the Electronic Health Records (EHR) of a hospital over 7 years. Materials and methods Temporal Variability Assessment (TVA) based on probabilistic data quality assessment was applied to the historic monthly-batched admission data of Hospital La Fe Valencia, Spain from 2010 to 2016. Routine healthcare data with a complete EHR was expanded by processed variables such as the Charlson Comorbidity Index. Results Four Process-Reengineering interventions were detected by quantifiable effects on the EHR: (1) the hospital relocation in 2011 involved progressive reduction of admissions during the next four months, (2) th…
