L-Tyrosine beta-naphthylamide, a synthetic substrate designed to measure tyrosine aminopeptidase activity, is a potent inhibitor of hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:tyramine N-(hydroxycinnamoyl)transferase (THT) purified from elicited tobacco cell-suspension cultures. The inhibition is competitive, with the inhibitor binding reversibly to the tyramine binding site of the enzyme. Similar results were obtained with THT extracted from elicited potato cell-suspension cultures. Ki values were found to be 0.66 microM for the enzyme from tobacco and 0.3 microM for the enzyme from potato. Background—Previous work indicated that enzymatically remodeled LDL (E-LDL) might activate complement in atherosclerotic lesions via a C-reactive protein (CRP)–dependent and CRP-independent pathway. We sought to substantiate this contention and determine whether both pathways drive the sequence to completion.Methods and Results—E-LDL was prepared by sequential treatment of LDL with a protease and cholesteryl esterase. In this study, the effect of sixteen different enzymes on serum C1 and its subcomponents was investigated. The sixteen enzymes could be divided into three groups. First, enzymes which activate native C1: trypsin (optimal concentration 2.4 x 10(-4) mM); alpha-chymotrypsin (2.3 x 10(3) mM); thrombin (1.0 x 10(-5) mM); plasmin (1.9 x 10(-5) mM); elastase (5.8 x 10(-5) mM); pronase (3.0 x 10(-6) mM). The genus Neophyllaphis (Takahashi) (Aphididae: Neophyllaphidinae) is composed of 18 species; however, in the Americas only nine species have been reported previously. A new species, Neophyllaphis varicolor Miller & Halbert, was described in 2014 in USA. Colonies resembling those of this new species have been observed in Costa Rica on Podocarpus spp. In order to determine if N. varicolor is also present in Costa Rica, we sampled Neophyllaphis colonies from Podocarpus falcatus and P. chinensis. Additionally, we sampled individuals from Podocarpus sp. in Spain and Vietnam. [EN] In this work we evaluated the imaging properties of the Diffractive Corneal Inlay (DCI), a novel type of corneal implant working by diffraction that we proposed for the treatment of presbyopia. ZEMAX OpticStudio software was employed for the numerical assessment, with simulations performed in a human-based eye model. In the ray tracing analysis, we used the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), the Area under the MTF (AMTF), and the Point Spread Function (PSF).
