TRADITION AND MODERNITY OF CATALAN VAULTS: HISTORICAL AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

2012

2016

The private library of Immanuel Benzinger (1865-1935), a professor of theology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Latvia from 1921 till 1935, is one of remarkable historical collections at the disposal of the Library of the University of Latvia. It comprises literature that reflects all areas of prof. Immanuel Benzinger’s interests and had provided him a high level of competence in the field of theology, covering a broad spectrum of research materials on the Old Testament, biblical archeology and biblical geography, biblical languages and resources for studying them, etc.etc. This historical collection mostly represents books issued at the end of the19th century and the first d…

High Levels of Exogenous C2-Ceramide Promote Morphological and Biochemical Evidences of Necrotic Features in Thyroid Follicular Cells

2002

CD95 and ceramide are known to be involved in the apoptotic mechanism. The triggering of CD95 induces a cascade of metabolic events that progressively and dramatically modifies the cell shape by intense membrane blebbing, leading to apoptotic bodies production. Although the CD95 pathway has been abundantly described in normal thyrocytes, the effects of cell permeable synthetic ceramide at morphological and biochemical levels are not fully known. In the present study, we show that thyroid follicular cells (TFC) exposed to 20 μM of C2-ceramide for 4 h are characterized by morphological features of necrosis, such as electron-lucent cytoplasm, mitochondrial swelling, and loss of plasma membrane…

Impact of Glutathione Peroxidase-1 Deficiency on Macrophage Foam Cell Formation and Proliferation: Implications for Atherogenesis

2013

Clinical and experimental evidence suggests a protective role for the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPx-1) in the atherogenic process. GPx-1 deficiency accelerates atherosclerosis and increases lesion cellularity in ApoE(-/-) mice. However, the distribution of GPx-1 within the atherosclerotic lesion as well as the mechanisms leading to increased macrophage numbers in lesions is still unknown. Accordingly, the aims of the present study were (1) to analyze which cells express GPx-1 within atherosclerotic lesions and (2) to determine whether a lack of GPx-1 affects macrophage foam cell formation and cellular proliferation. Both in situ-hybridization and immunohistochemistry of l…

Assessment of local cellular immunity in lung cancer by bronchoalveolar lavage.

1990

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most malignant of the pulmonary neoplasms and is associated with a poor local cellular immune response. 16 patients with non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and 11 patients with SCLC underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in the lung which harbored the tumor in order to investigate the lymphocyte surface antigens utilizing the immunoperoxidase technique. Analysis of blood lymphocytes was performed in parallel. 8 patients with previous sarcoidosis in complete remission who underwent BAL and 10 normal blood donors served as controls. Among blood lymphocytes the CD3+, CD4+ and CD16+ cell populations were elevated significantly and the T4/T8 ratio was elevate…

Uptake and presentation of exogenous antigen and presentation of endogenously produced antigen by skin dendritic cells represent equivalent pathways …

2008

Gene gun-mediated biolistic DNA vaccination with beta-galactosidase (betaGal)-encoding plasmid vectors efficiently modulated antigen-induced immune responses in an animal model of type I allergy, including the inhibition of immunoglobulin E (IgE) production. Here we show that CD4(+) as well as CD8(+) T cells from mice biolistically transfected with a plasmid encoding betaGal under the control of the fascin promoter (pFascin-betaGal) are capable of inhibiting betaGal-specific IgE production after adoptive transfer into naïve recipients. Moreover, suppression of IgE production was dependent on interferon (IFN)-gamma. To analyse the modalities of activation of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells regardi…
