Circumstantial Evidence for Rotating Mass Matrix from Fermion Mass and Mixing Data

2002

It is shown that existing data on the mixing between up and down fermion states and on the hierarchical mass ratios between fermion generations, as far as can be so analysed at present, are all consistent with the two phenomena being both consequences of a mass matrix rotating in generation space with changing energy scale. As a result, the rotating mass matrix can be traced over some 14 orders of magnitude in energy from the mass scale of the $t$-quark at 175 GeV to below that of the atmospheric neutrino at 0.05 eV.

Avoiding strange attractors in efficient parametric families of iterative methods for solving nonlinear problems

2019

[EN] Searching zeros of nonlinear functions often employs iterative procedures. In this paper, we construct several families of iterative methods with memory from one without memory, that is, we have increased the order of convergence without adding new functional evaluations. The main aim of this manuscript yields in the advantage that the use of real multidimensional dynamics gives us to decide among the different classes designed and, afterwards, to select its most stable members. Moreover, we have found some elements of the family whose behavior includes strange attractors of different kinds that must be avoided in practice. In this sense, Feigenbaum diagrams have resulted an extremely …

On the blue phase structure of hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals via 19F NMR

2018

Abstract 19 F NMR spectra are simulated for blue phase I of FPHG( St 1.5 ∗ Ap 1.5 ) based on a model of a double-twisted substructure inside cylinders that form a body-centred cubic lattice. A kinetic matrix is included to describe jump processes over quarter pitch lengths. Though the lines in the NMR spectra are broad and featureless, changes in the widths and positions with temperature are well described by the blue phase model structure. The spectra in the chiral nematic N∗ phase are also simulated. Dynamics in the BP I are found to be slower than in the N∗ phase.

Stationary battery systems in the main world markets: Part 1: Overview of the state-of-the-art

2017

The role of energy storage systems (ESSs) is becoming more and more important in modern power grids, mainly because of the higher penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources (RESs), such as solar and wind power, spurred by advantageous support policies carried out in several countries. The fluctuation nature of the energy produced by RESs is indeed leading to emerging power quality issues or to renewable curtailments. ESSs can be used to balance generation and demand of electricity over time, allowing a higher penetration of RESs into the power network. The energy storage industry is evolving rapidly, and new electrochemical technologies are entering the market. Besides, most elect…

Technological and legislative status point of stationary energy storages in the EU

2019

Abstract European renewable generation has been supported through several policy instruments in the last decades, and this has caused a significant growth of the renewable energy sector, spurred by the ambitious climate and energy policy targets. Despite this impetuous growth, the electricity infrastructure is not yet ready to accept increasing shares of variable renewable energy sources (RES) generation, and this is causing grid balance challenges, due to the inherently variable nature of the PV and wind energy. In order to overcome this issue, allowing higher shares of renewable generation in the energy sector, energy storage (ES) systems are becoming increasingly competitive in the globa…

Exploiting historical rainfall and landslide data in a spatial database for the derivation of critical rainfall thresholds

2017

Critical rainfall thresholds for landslides are powerful tools for preventing landslide hazard. The thresholds are commonly estimated empirically starting from rainfall events that triggered landslides in the past. The creation of the appropriate rainfall–landslide database is one of the main efforts in this approach. In fact, an accurate agreement between the landslide and rainfall information, in terms of location and timing, is essential in order to correctly estimate the rainfall–landslide relationships. A further issue is taking into account the average moisture conditions prior the triggering event, which reasonably may be crucial in determining the sufficient amount of precipitation.…

Students' Perceptions on Engaging Database Domains and Structures

2023

Several educational studies have argued for the contextualization of assignments, i.e., for providing a context or a story instead of an abstract or symbolic problem statement. Such contextualization may have beneficial effects such as higher student engagement and lower dropout rates. In the domain of database education, textbooks and educators typically provide an example database for context. These are then used to introduce key concepts related to database design, and to illustrate querying. However, it remains unstudied what kinds of database contexts are engaging for novices. In this paper, we study which aspects of database domain and complexity students find engaging through student…

Principal component analysis on molecular descriptors as an alternative point of view in the search of new Hsp90 inhibitors

2009

Inhibiting a protein that regulates multiple signal transduction pathways in cancer cells is an attractive goal for cancer therapy. Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is one of the most promising molecular targets for such an approach. In fact, Hsp90 is a ubiquitous molecular chaperone protein that is involved in folding, activating and assembling of many key mediators of signal transduction, cellular growth, differentiation, stress-response and apoptothic pathways. With the aim to analyze which molecular descriptors have the higher importance in the binding interactions of these classes, we first performed molecular docking experiments on the 187 Hsp90 inhibitors included in the BindingDB, a pu…

Modic changes-Their associations with low back pain and activity limitation: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

2018

Background Previous systematic reviews have reported positive associations between Modic changes (MCs) and low back pain (LBP), but due to their narrow scope and new primary studies, there is a need for a comprehensive systematic review. Our objectives were to investigate if MCs are associated with non-specific LBP and/or activity limitation and if such associations are modified by other factors. Methods A protocol for this review was registered at PROSPERO prior to commencing the work (PROSPERO record: CRD42015017350). The MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE databases were searched for relevant studies from first record to June 15th 2016. Prospective or retrospective cross-sectional cohort studies …

Next-generation sequencing: big data meets high performance computing

2017

The progress of next-generation sequencing has a major impact on medical and genomic research. This high-throughput technology can now produce billions of short DNA or RNA fragments in excess of a few terabytes of data in a single run. This leads to massive datasets used by a wide range of applications including personalized cancer treatment and precision medicine. In addition to the hugely increased throughput, the cost of using high-throughput technologies has been dramatically decreasing. A low sequencing cost of around US$1000 per genome has now rendered large population-scale projects feasible. However, to make effective use of the produced data, the design of big data algorithms and t…
