In-Work Benefits for Married Couples: An Ex-Ante Evaluation of EITC and WTC Policies in Italy
2012
This paper investigates labor supply and redistributive effects of in-work benefits for Italian married couples using a tax-benefit microsimulation model and a multi-sectoral discrete choice model of labor supply. We consider in-work benefits based on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Working Tax Credit (WTC) existing in the US and the UK, respectively. The standard design of these income support mechanisms is however augmented with a premium for two-earner households to avoid potential disincentive effects on secondary earners. Revenue neutral policy simulations show that our reforms may greatly improve the current Italian tax-benefit system in terms of both incentive and redistr…
Should all the world be taxed?
1997
Governments are beginning to fear that the establishment of the “information society” will cause their revenue from taxation to shrink: economic activities in the virtual world of the Internet could escape the application of value added tax. Are these fears justified? Would a “bit tax” solve the problem?
MAC-Engine
2011
In this demo, we prove that the flexibility supported by off-the-shelf IEEE 802.11 hardware can be significantly extended if we move the control of the MAC programming interface from the driver to the firmware, i.e. from the host CPU to the card CPU. To this purpose, we introduce the concept of MAC--Engine, that is an executor of Programmable Finite State Machines (PFSM) implemented at the firmware level: we show how the card itself can support different protocol logics thanks to PFSM bytecode representations that can be dynamically injected inside the card memory at run-time without incurring in down time issues or network disconnect events. We provide different PFSM examples in order to t…
Sea ice extent and seasonality for the Early Pliocene northern Weddell Sea
2010
Abstract Growth increment analysis coupled with stable isotopic data ( δ 18 O/ δ 13 C) from Early Pliocene (ca 4.7 Ma) Austrochlamys anderssoni from shallow marine sediments of the Cockburn Island Formation, northern Antarctic Peninsula, suggest these bivalves grew through much of the year, even during the coldest parts of winter recorded in the shells. The high frequency fluctuation in growth increment width of A. anderssoni appears to reflect periodic, but year-round, agitation of the water column enhancing benthic food supply from organic detritus. This suggests that Austrochlamys favoured waters that were largely sea ice free. Our data support interpretation of the Cockburn Island Forma…
A real-time non-intrusive FPGA-based drowsiness detection system
2011
Automotive has gained several benefits from the Ambient Intelligent researches involving the deployment of sensors and hardware devices into an intelligent environment surrounding people, meeting users’ requirements and anticipating their needs. One of the main topics in automotive is to anticipate driver needs and safety, in terms of preventing critical and dangerous events. Considering the high number of caused accidents, one of the most relevant dangerous events affecting driver and passengers safety is driver’s drowsiness and hypovigilance. This paper presents a low-intrusive, real-time driver’s drowsiness detection system for common vehicles. The proposed system exploits the ‘‘bright p…
Influence of Perioperative cis-Platinum on Breaking Strength of Bowel Anastomoses in Rats
1985
Adjuvant and perioperative chemotherapy is increasingly being used in the treatment of malignant disease. Therefore, the influence of cytostatic drugs is of interest and is being investigated experimentally. The influence of various drugs is well known and has been described elsewhere (Shamberger et al. 1981). Recently, cis-platinum, an inorganic complex that inhibits DNA synthesis by cross-linking DNA strands, has been introduced. In urology it has shown a surprisingly good effect on testicular tumors and has been used in bladder cancer for palliative treatment, being one of the most potent drugs for this purpose (Yagoda 1979). It is now being combined with cystectomy for curative therapy …
Adriamycin and Daunomycin in the Treatment of Vesical and Prostatic Neoplasias. Preliminary Results
1972
Our preHrninary experience with adriamycin in tumors of the bladder and prostate is of 25 treatments performed in 21 patients. The discrepancy between the numbers of patients and treatments is due to the fact that some patients were again submitted to various therapeutic cycles upon subsequent admissions. The treatments administered to the same patient at different times are considered individually, with regard either to a different schedule and way of administration of the drug, or to the interposition of other therapeutic means in the intervals between treatments. In addition, 13 patients were treated with daunomycin, as shown in Table 1.
Recent progress in the pharmacotherapy of cancer pain.
2001
Cancer pain can be relatively well managed with primary therapies, according to the WHO ladder. However, different conditions may limit the response to the analgesic drug used, which are mainly oploids. Specifically, adverse effects may prevail against the analgesic activity in the clinical setting. New pharmacological strategies may enable a more satisfactory response to be obtained, in terms of balance between analgesia and adverse effects. The change of route of administration or the use of alternative opioids is a first-line option. The use of adjuvant drugs may also improve analgesia with different mechanisms. Recent studies have demonstrated the value of these alternative approaches. …
Pharmacogenetics and Forensic Toxicology: A New Step towards a Multidisciplinary Approach
2021
Pharmacogenetics analyzes the individual behavior of DNA genes after the administration of a drug. Pharmacogenetic research has been implemented in recent years thanks to the improvement in genome sequencing techniques and molecular genetics. In addition to medical purposes, pharmacogenetics can constitute an important tool for clarifying the interpretation of toxicological data in post-mortem examinations, sometimes crucial for determining the cause and modality of death. The purpose of this systematic literature review is not only to raise awareness among the forensic community concerning pharmacogenetics, but also to provide a workflow for forensic toxicologists to follow in cases of unk…
New drugs for pain management in advanced cancer patients.
2017
Advanced cancer patients represent a frail population, often requiring aggressive pain management, particularly in the late stage of disease, when untreated pain is one the most important causes of suffering. Areas covered: In the last decade, a series of new analgesics have been introduced in the market to offer additional options amongst existent drugs. The characteristics of these drugs, their efficacy and tolerability are examined on the basis of existent studies. Expert opinion: Although new analgesic preparations have been developed in recent years, no specific drug has provided a better analgesic performance in comparison with others. Some technologies have been developed to increase…
