Vertigo in childhood: A methodological approach
2012
Children complaints dizziness merit meticulous evaluation to differentially diagnose a vestibular disease. A syndrome mimicking certain classic signs and symptoms of adult vestibular disorders may be presents in children, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, usually associated with aging. Benign paroxysmal vertigo, in which migraine is a manifestation, with sudden onset of dizziness is a rare peripheral vestibular disorder that is commonly ignored or misdiagnosed. This review covers the development of the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment approaches of vertigo of childhood, a valid support for physician that approach dizzy children (Ref. 25). Tax authority to the European Parliament?
1995
In this paper we analyze whether countries of the EC community should plead for a decentralized system to finance the European funds rather than using a uniform tax imposed by the European parliament. The analysis is within a multistage game-theoretic framework in which the implication of the financing system of a confederation on the investment behavior in the respective states is considered. The paper is in the tradition of the literature which claims that from a view of global efficiency property-rights structures inducing ex-post efficient allocations may be worse than a system leading to an ex-post inefficient allocation. For this specific economic issue we elucidate the tradeoff betwe…
La filiera siciliana della pasta: un'applicazione della netchain analysis
2016
The system of Sicilian durum wheat is facing, as indeed is happening to the entire food system, the evolution of consumption patterns toward higher quality requirements: health-wise, primarily, but also including some intangible requirements. Recent acquisitions in the field of healthy food, have called attention to some specific characteristics of Sicilian durum wheat. The durum wheat sector represents a major landmark for regional agriculture, being by far the most widespread arable crop in Sicily; a crop that, over the past 30 years, has evolved considerably, due to the impact of EU regulations. Currently, the whole Sicilian cereal-pasta chain shows shortcomings in organization and size,…
Three-body approach to proton-hydrogen charge exchange and elastic scattering
1999
The impact-parameter Faddeev approach to atomic three-body collisions which has been developed for, and successfully applied to, ion-atom scattering processes, has now been developed further by including, instead of the Coulomb potentials, the full two-particle off-shell Coulomb {ital T} matrices in all {open_quotes}triangle{close_quotes} contributions to the effective potentials. Results of calculations of proton-hydrogen collisions with only the ground states of the hydrogen retained in both the direct and the rearrangement channels are presented. Total and differential electron transfer, as well as differential elastic scattering cross sections, are obtained simultaneously in very good a…
Studio di validazione dell'ACE-R in lingua italiana nella popolazione degli young-old e degli old-old
2012
Introduction. The main aims of the study were the translation into Italian, and validation subsequently of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R), and the evaluation of its usefulness in discriminating cognitively normal subjects from patients with mild dementia. Methods. The ACE-R was translated and adapted into Italian. The Italian ACE-R was administrated to a group of 179 elderly subjects (72 cognitively intact and 107 subjects with mild dementia, mean age 75.4 years ± 6.4). The group was stratified in two sub-samples according to age, i.e. young-old (< 75 years) and old-old (≥ 75 years), in order to evaluate test's sensitivity and specificity in detecting dementia among…
Design and Implementation of an Electronic Control Unit for a CFR Bi-Fuel Spark Ignition Engine
2017
In this work an Electronic Control Unit for the management of a CFR engine will be described. The engine, which is used both for fuel octane rating (both in terms of RON and MON) and for research purpose, is equipped with a double injection system, with the aim to independently operate both with liquid and gaseous fuels. The developed ECU, hence, is able to control the injections of both kind of fuel, together with the spark ignition. Furthermore the system is also able to measure fuel’s consumption, instantaneous engine speed of rotation and air-fuel ratio, showing all the running parameters both on a local LCD display and on a PC based graphical user interface.
An Embedded Fingerprints Classification System based on Weightless Neural Networks
2009
Automatic fingerprint classification provides an important indexing scheme to facilitate efficient matching in large-scale fingerprint databases in Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFISs). The paper presents a new fast fingerprint classification module implementing on embedded Weightless Neural Network (RAM-based neural network). The proposed WNN architecture uses directional maps to classify fingerprint images in the five NIST classes (Left Loop, Right Loop, Whorl, Arch and Tented Arch) without anyone enhancement phase. Starting from the directional map, the WNN architecture computes the fingerprint classification rate. The proposed architecture is implemented on Celoxica RC20…
Numerical and Experimental Study of Defects Evolution in a Composites Wing Box Under Compressive Loads
2013
Due to their high specific strength and stiffness, Carbon Fibres Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are commonly considered suitable for aerospace structural applications. However, their failure mechanisms are not completely predictable and this is the main reason why the CFRP integration in the aerospace industry has been generally slow in the last twenty years. Indeed, the lack of robust numerical tools, able to take into account the damage tolerance of composite structures, has led to over-conservative designs, not fully realising the promised economic benefits of composites materials. The Project MACMES (Damage Management of Aircraft Composite Structures Monitored by Embedded Sensors), funded b…

Finite elements augmented with embedded interphases for application in quasi-brittle materials
2022
Quasi-brittle materials mainly fail under shear or tensile stress state. When the stress limit is reached, fractures propagate and the stress-strain relation exhibits a softening branch until failure. In the framework of finite elements, discrete crack models and continuous smeared crack models have been implemented to best capture material’s response. In this ambit, we propose a strategy based on the Augmented Finite Element Method (A-FEM, [1]), which can be placed among the discrete crack models, since intra-element weak discontinuity is considered and modelled through a zero-thickness interphase model (IPH, [2, 3]). The original element is in practice divided in two elastic sub-elements …
